IT was a simple question,
a gentle query about the wellbeing of a little girl
abandoned at a Melbourne train station by her father.

But it was too much for the child's grandmother,
who broke down in a New Zealand court yesterday
trying to explain the void in Qian Xun Xue's life
without her slain mum.

An An's husband, martial arts expert Nai Yin Xue, 55,
has pleaded not guilty to her murder.

The prosecution alleges
he strangled his wife with a necktie
and dumped her naked body in his car boot
before dropping Qian,
dubbed Pumpkin, in Melbourne
and flying to the US.

The young woman's mother, who now cares for Qian,
looked pained as she told Auckland High Court
via video link from China of her distrust of Mr Xue
and her instinct that things were wrong
in her daughter's marriage.

But it was not until a final question came from Justice Hugh Williams
that Ms Liu broke down.

Justice Williams,
who had refused Ms Liu's request
to address the jury directly,
said:
"Perhaps I could ask after your daughter's child?
How is she?"

Her heated and tearful answer, given in Mandarin, was ruled
"too controversial" to be translated, and the video link was cut.

During her 30 minutes of evidence, the grandmother,
clearly grief-stricken, said she had never met her daughter's husband,
only speaking to him twice on the phone, once to announce Qian's birth
and a second time soon after An An's death.

She had rung her daughter's mobile repeatedly
about September 11, 2007,
because she had not heard from her on the internet
and had a "bad feeling".

Mr Xue answered the phone on September 13.
Ms Liu said Mr Xue explained An An's absence by saying she had gone to
a party in Wellington but had forgotten her mobile phone.

"At that time An An had already passed away. He (was) lying," she said.
"But I didn't dare think of the worst scenario."

She said she was suspicious but was a little reassured when Mr Xue said
the little girl had gone too, as her daughter would always take Qian with her.

The prosecution alleges Mr Xue made his escape soon after.

in a Melbourne travel agency
for somewhere to fly to.

Nai Yin Xue, 55, has pleaded not guilty
to the murder of his wife An An Liu, 27,
in Auckland in September 2007.

The Crown alleges he strangled Liu and then flew to Melbourne,
dumping the couple's
three-year-old daughter
Qian Xun Xue,
who was nicknamed Pumpkin,
at Southern Cross station
before absconding to the United States.

A former STA travel agent, Michelle Slade, told his High Court trial
in Auckland that Mr Xue came into her Melbourne CBD store alone
the day before Qian was abandoned.

She told the jury of 12 women that the martial arts expert appeared
uneasy and urgently required a flight to Los Angeles that day.

"I could detect it was a matter of urgency that he leave,"
Ms Slade told the court via video link.

When told there were no flights to LA, he then asked after London,
and then started picking other destinations at random.

"He got up and looked at the world map and was randomly looking around on the map for other destinations that he had not thought of before.

About the Muster

How it all began

On October 2, 1999,
Deniliquin wrote itself into history
claiming the Guinness Book of Records title
for the largest parade of
legally registered utes in the world.

In March 1999, a small group of community minded people led by Council's then Tourism Manager, got together with the aim to start a rural themed festival to bring visitors to Deniliquin, our beautiful vibrant town on the edge of the outback.

Many suggestions were raised and discussions centered on the shape and genre of the new festival, what was unanimously agreed though, was that it must showcase our pride of our unique Deniliquin way of life.

Hence the Deni Play on the Plains Festival was conceived, a festival to be held on the flattest, natural, open plains on earth, ute culture an intrinsic part of Deniliquin, would play a major part of the festival and hence the Deni World Record Ute Muster burst into the national psyche.

An amazing 2839 drivers took part, clearly establishing Deniliquin as the ute capital of the world and wrote itself into history claiming the Guinness Book of Records title for the largest parade of legally registered utes in the World.
A new world record bid has been held as part of the annual Play on the Plains Festival each September/October NSW Labour Day Long weekend since then, bringing more and more utes and visitors to our town every year.

Melbourne Customs officials also gave evidence at the trial,
with one officer, Stephen Franz, telling the court that
Mr Xue had told him he was on holiday in the city
and had never been there before, which was in fact untrue.

Mr Xue appeared to be interested in other Australian cities,
with Crown prosecutor Aaron Perkins telling the jury
he was trying to make himself harder to track.

"He asked about bus travel,
how far to Sydney... how far to Brisbane,"
Mr Franz told the court from Melbourne.

"I told him Brisbane would take at least 20 hours.

"He then asked
'Are there any bigger cities around here?'
and I told him,
'No'."

The trial is expected to wrap up next week.

The senior science advisor to the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) has called for the establishment of a Southern Hemisphere network of deep ocean moorings to detect any change in ocean circulation that may adversely influence global climate.

In a commentary published in the journal Science today, Dr John Church of the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystem Cooperative Research Centre and CSIRO, through the Wealth from Oceans Flagship, said a Southern Hemisphere observing network is needed to complement a network of moorings now spanning the North Atlantic Ocean.

The North Atlantic moored network (at latitude 26ºN) provides measurements of the Gulf Stream – a significant feature in moderating European and North American climate by moving warm waters towards high latitudes.

It monitors two key elements of what is called the ‘North Atlantic overturning circulation’: the northward flow of near-surface, warm water which is controlled by a combination of surface winds and gradients of temperature and salinity, and; the southward flow of cold, deep water.

“An equivalent Southern Hemisphere monitoring network to measure changes in the Southern Ocean limb of the overturning circulation, where water mass changes have also been observed, is yet to be designed,” Dr Church said.

“However, the establishment of such a system in the Southern Hemisphere is critical to providing the additional data ocean scientists need to more accurately monitor any shifts in the global ocean circulation that influence world climate,” he said.
“A recent study suggests it would take several decades of observations to detect any trends in the circulation and a similar time frame to assess which if any other the models most accurately reflects reality,”
Dr Church said.

In a paper published earlier this year in Science, Cunningham et al. estimate they can measure any variation in the annual average overturning to better than 10 per cent, which would be sufficient to detect any large scale abrupt transition in the overturning circulation. In another paper published in Nature in 2005, UK scientists (Bryden et al) used five decades of measurements to estimate changes of 30 per cent in the overturning circulation in the North Atlantic and a 20 per cent reduction in the amount of heat being transported to the region.

“Prior to the current observations, it was unclear how large and rapid the variations in this overturning circulation were,” Dr Church said. “The latest results show that the variation in the overturning over a year was as large as the changes previously observed by Bryden et al.

“Even though an assessment of the current generation of climate models indicate that a large abrupt transition is unlikely during the 21st Century, monitoring and understanding the variability will be critical to detecting any change and to improving models, thus allowing more reliable projections of climate change.

“A recent study suggests it would take several decades of observations to detect any trends in the circulation and a similar time frame to assess which if any other the models most accurately reflects reality,” Dr Church said.

“Verifying our climate projections and continuing to assess the stability of the overturning circulation remains a priority of the WCRP,” he said.

One public image of climate change is a rapid and dramatic collapse of the northward flow of warm water to high latitudes, with possible serious implications for North American and European climate.

This warm water flows from the Florida Strait northward along the east coast of America as the Gulf Stream. After leaving the coast of North America, the warm water flows northeastward before it diverges, with some water continuing northward beyond Iceland and the remainder returning in a broad southward flow in the upper kilometre of the ocean.

Throughout its northward journey, the warm water loses heat to the atmosphere and becomes denser. The colder denser water sinks at high latitudes north of Iceland and returns southward at depths of 2-5 kilometres.

Two processes can prevent high-latitude water from sinking: surface warming and decreased salinity caused by freshwater runoff from rain and glacier meltwater from glaciers and the Greenland Ice Sheet. This would disrupt the overturning circulation.

Observations indicate there has been a freshening of the North Atlantic while climate change models in which carbon dioxide concentrations quadruple over 140 years project a decrease in the overturning circulation by 10-50 per cent.

The incident with the USS John S. McCain
occurred off the coast of the Philippines,
CNN television reported, quoting a US official
who said it was an "inadvertent encounter".

The array, used to locate underwater sounds,
was damaged in the incident, but the military official said
the sub and ship did not collide.

The US Navy did not consider the event a
case of deliberate harassment, CNN reported.

In March this year two tense standoffs between
US and Chinese vessels
in the South China Sea
triggered accusations by the US that China
was behaving in an "aggressive" manner.

China later said a US naval vessel involved in the incident with Chinese fishing boats in the Yellow Sea had violated maritime law, and urged the
US to take steps to avoid a repetition.

Pressure is mounting for the nation to have
a unified Australian brand.
The Sun-Herald challenged four
advertising companies to come up with
an ad that sells Australia as a brand.
Matthew Benns reports

THE Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd,
is about to receive a delegation from
the country's major exporters calling for
a "Brand Australia Council"...

The director of
Believe Advertising,
Adrian Falk,
took a different tack with the
"Escape while you can"
ad that was aimed at a younger audience.
"Who wants to spend another Christmas
or family holiday with the parents when you
could come and escape to Australia instead?" he said.

The Gruen Transfer panelist and chief executive of Leo Burnett, Todd Sampson, said: "None of them really tackled the rebranding issue or had the wow factor. They tended to do what has already been done before. The challenge facing Australia now is to find its own space in people's heads. Just like Las Vegas instantly means adult playground, so Australia needs to find its own brand."

25 per cent stake in Porsche

QATAR is ready to acquire at least a 25 per cent stake
in German luxury sportscar maker Porsche,
heavily in debt after increasing its shares in Volkswagen,
according to German media.

"The emirate of Qatar and
its adviser Credit Suisse

finished the preliminary examination
of Porsche's books,''
the German news weekly Der Spiegel says
in an article to appear in Monday's edition.

Ferdinand Piech, a co-owner of Porsche and former Volkswagen boss,
does not have enough backing to turn down Qatar, the weekly says.

A special meeting of Porsche's board of directors could decide in
early July on a capital increase to present to shareholders at an
annual general meeting in September.

At the latest by November, up to five billion euros ($A8.61 billion)
could be added to Porsche's accounts by a capital increase,'' Spiegel said.

According to the Sunday edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung,
how Qatar can invest in Porsche will be discussed this weekend.

Qatar has asked for voting shares, a first at Porsche which is wholly controlled by members of the Porsche-Piech families, German media reported.

Porsche is being crushed by nine billion euros ($A15.51 billion) of
debt incurred when it tried to take over Volkswagen, the biggest
European carmaker, in which Porsche now holds a stake of 51 per cent.

Porsche abandoned its bid to take full control of VW last month and the two car makers said they would discuss terms of a merger, but disagreements quickly surfaced between the Porsche and Piech families.

The state of Qatar investing in Porsche could allow the car maker to
revive its original plan of taking over the much bigger VW.

It would also mark the second major investment by Middle Eastern
interests in Germany's auto sector.

In late March, the Abu Dhabi state investment fund Aabar Investments bought a nine per cent stake in Daimler, which owns Mercedes-Benz.

Porsche could not be reached on Saturday for comment on the media reports.
