When people project, they are often unable to access truthful memories, intentions, and experiences, even about their own nature.
As Christians, we are aware that we all sin, that no one is perfect, and that we make mistakes. This helps us to not project onto others, because we maintain a sense of true perspective, and with some meikness and humbleness thrown in, flaws that we may have are not placed onto others, but are more truthfully addressed, thus with Christs teachings we are better enabled to become (and often do) better people as we go through life
