was channel hopping and have just turned to Countryfile on BBC1 where they were re-chalking one of the large white horses engrained into the hillside around south England. I'm Scottish so I've known of them, seen them on TV etc but it's never been something I am subjected to or come across regularly so its never crossed my mind. However, the words '3000yr old mystery' - 'reason for the horses being created are unknown' made me wonder what the true meaning could be. does anyone know about these creations, any myths, legends around them? and what they may symbolise? Are they meant to be related to unicorns?
They aren't horns on them tho.
Just thought it'd be a nice topic for discusion.

It was the white horse at Uffington, there was an iron-age (I think, maybe it was bronze age?) tribe living there and they made it, the reason is unknown. All the other chalk horses were made much later, I remember one of them was done because Queen Victoria came for a visit (can't remember which one though).
The white horse was important in ancient British society, it was seen as symbolic of power and strength among other things and viewed with respect.
The crop circles are often formed near these horses. So maybe they are an ET post box if you will.Lots of orbs have been filmed at these sites, then theres the answer crop circle to the seti message. Then as 2012 aproaches they are getting a facelift, one in this link shows milatary involvement; http://www.hows.org.uk/personal/hillfigs/folk/folk.htm
Then there is Dragon hill, Close to Uffington,Possable anciet draco landing pad :D

Dragon Hill is a low flat-topped mound situated in the valley below the White Horse. In legend it is the place where St George slew the dragon, its blood spilling on the hilltop and leaving forever a bare white patch where no grass can grow. Some suggest that the horse is a representation of St George's steed or even of the slain dragon itself.
