Hello Forum Members
http://i.afterdawn.com/storage/pictures/utorrent-logo.png
Here I will write a hopefully easy to follow tutorial on how to install uTorrent and download Torrent Files.
Torrents are not just for 'illegal files' ~ you can find free files and documents, and this thread IS NOT looking for your moral standing regarding P2P (Peer~to~Peer).
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Torrents are what you can call a selection of files, documents, programmes and software packaged in such a way to be able to use with a torrent downloader.
So when you see 'torrent' - it merely means a selection of files in torrent form.
To download a torrent file (or many files) you need a torrent handler, a simple, FREE open-source program that can download the files you choose from the sources that are supplying them.
uTorrent available here ~> http://www.utorrent.com/
(Click Free Download Button to download to your Desktop)
Once you have downloaded this program, double click the icon and work through each screen to install it. Make sure you select or dis-select the options on each step, which is very simple (it comes bundled with yahoo toolbar, so dis-select this option before clicking 'finish').
Now, your computer has now got the program to be able to handle torrent files.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, looking for torrents is simple, and needs only simple knowledge to download them, but a few tips can help.
Type 'Torrentpond' into Google. This site has Mininova and Btjunkie included in its list of searcher sites. For normal users, you do not need any other torrent sites other than these two. :)
http://torrentpond.com/
On the left hand side, you will see a host of torrent sites to search. Type the key words with precise spelling into the search bar there on the left, and click the small circle next to the site names (Mininova and Btjunkie) to search them.
Now, when you have results, such as like this >>
From mininova...
http://www.mininova.org/tor/767930
From btjunkie..
http://btjunkie.org/torrent/Echoes-of-Nature-The-Natural-Sounds-of-the-Wilderness-10-CDs-collection/44860a4db4c314cf0e4a33c648a9c4b85825604e2bf3
On Btjunkie, comments are not as popular as they are on mininova, but it does have one good feature to look out for.
On the link above look for the box with this written inside>>
'This torrent has been verified by the community' - This is a good way to know the torrent is excellent quality, has all files, works if it is a game for example, etc.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
When selecting a torrent, once you have decided you want your chosen one, click 'Download torrent' or 'download torrent here', which will always be at the top of the screen, on Mininova it is in blue on the left, and btjunkie in green on the left - its a small box on left that simply says ' Torrent Download'.
Now, your computer will ask you to agree to open the torrent with uTorrent. Click yes, and click the box 'always remember', so in the future it will know to use uTorrent.
(Browser versions will have their own methods, but between internet explorer and Firefox there are only small differences, won't be of any issue. (if it is, then you simply need to click away and learn!)
If your computer says it does not know which program to use - click search for the program to use. Click o.k, search and locate the uTorrent exe (executable file) that you previously installed. >>
C:/User/Programfiles/uTorrent. (the address line WILL vary on your own p.c obviously)
Now you are ready to go.
>>
Open uTorrent, and click 'Preferences'. Work through the options to suit you,
Now, in utorrent, when looking at your file being downloaded like this screen shot (Not mine, from Google images)
X.P Look >
http://karthik3685.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/utorrent.jpg
Vista / Win 7 Look>
http://cybernetnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/utorrent.jpg
Notice the 'Completed/Finished/Status % on the toolbars - when your torrent is finished at 100%, you can click it once and then press 'stop', then 'delete'. This WILL NOT delete your download from your P.C, it will just remove it from uTorrent - which you should do!.
Upload means it is finished downloading 100% then uploading to another downloader! So be careful to stop the files bye clicking 'stop' on the toolbar or RIGHT CLICKING on thew file once you have seeded a little, for power users they will seeds lots, but for shy users there's not much need, don't let people bully you into seeding, as its your bandwidth too!.
Also, you can pause, stop and restart paused torrents, add more info sections etc, by simply right-clicking the toolbars to do so.
You can decide where your torrents are placed by using the toolbar in utorrent itself and slowly working through each option screen - in 'preferences' like this here >
http://i41.tinypic.com/2zhfi21.jpg
Obviously, make a new folder first where you want them to go, say, My Documents/My Torrents, for example. Then go to the place in the picture above to change it :)
Mine is C/Rixx/Shared. Simple.
You Should Note a Few Things.
1) When you have selected your download, and it opens in uTorrent, before clicking yes - you will notice that it is possible to DE-SELECT files from folders. I use this all the time to dis-select nfo files or songs that i don't want or folder Jpegs etc.
This pictures shows this screen..
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r80/aki_stan/Utorrent8.jpg
2) General Description. ~ Here will be details of SIZE, Date and Author comments if any.
3) Details ~ Here will be the listing of the files within the torrent. Here you can see if it matches what you are looking for.
4) Comments. Here people will comment about the torrent, such as quality, and other related things. Always read these to get an idea yo make sure the torrent is the best one/quality from others.
More Notes.
Seeders - this means people uploading, - sharing the files whom have 100% of them.
Leechers = people with less than 100% (some people may only want 2 of 5 files for example thus do not download 100%, simple.
On torrent descriptions, seeders show up on a green bar mostly, and Leechers in red for easy viewing of torrent health status.
Speeds of torrents depend on how many are sharing, their bandwidth and your own bandwidth!
(For extended users, please do not confuse people by sending them to join up sites etc, they do not need them, or confusing them with extended abilities unless explained well, if people ask, then yes tell them but too many like to show off and bable on which does not help new users at all.)
