Hi.
I've been reading Aristotle's Politics and i can say i was amased.
I found that democracy in his era was something completely different than the "democracy" we have today.
I found out that many of today's problems had already solutions 2500 years ago.
Please let me tell you about this..
Democracy is a composite word from "demos" = public/state ,and "kratos"=authority/government.
So it means that the public <people> govern their own selves.
Do we govern our own selves today ??
Let me tell you more..
The word "politis" and "politics" comes out from the word "Polis" that usually it's meaning is misunderstood and is considered to be a city <geographical place>.
But Polis is not the place nor the buildings, but the "organised society of humans".
In democracy all people are equal, and their opinion counts and they are part of politics.
Are we part of what is happening today ?
Back then there were no "presidents".
People were gathering at the main square of the city-state they were debating about things, and at the end they were voting of what they wanted to do.
Instantly,everyone.
They were voting for each law.
And majority was winning.
And what is happening today ?
We only elect someone every 4 years, and we give him the authority to do whatever he like for the rest 4 years..
But what if he do things not appreciated and wanted by his people ?
We will just call him a lier and that's all ?
We see that today's "democratic" system has faults that can lead to a non-democratic authority.
Many people say that we can't ressurect ancient Athenean democracy because it is not possible to happen.
But the "reason" that they give is because today states have too many population and we couldn't count each one's arm.
That is a rediculous explanation.
And it is rediculous because we can use an old system with today's technology.
Of caurse and we will not count people's arms!!
We will count paper votes!
But what we are talking about is to change the fact that we vote a person every 4 years, and start voting laws and other actions every so and then.
What do you think ?
Are today's people too imature to directly vote for the laws of their own society or not ?
At least i found that there is a way for a more free and fair political system that if anything else, would make people deside for their selves either they make wise selections either they will make things worse.
