'I want to buy kids for R20 000'

Durban - A local woman fears for the safety of her family after finding out that somebody wanted to buy one of her children for R20 000, and that this person knew the movements of her family.

Chantel Hill said she was particularly concerned about the number of people from as far as Johannesburg and Boksburg who indicated they'd had similar experiences.

"Five or six months ago I received an e-mail about people offering domestic workers money for the children they took care of, but I never thought it would happen to me," she said.

According to Hill, her domestic worker told her at the beginning of August that a woman had called her at the end of July to offer her R20 000 for one of Hill's children. Hill has two daughters and also takes care of a nephew. The oldest child is seven years old.

The domestic worker added that the woman didn't say whether she wanted a boy or a girl, said Hill.

The domestic worker at first thought the woman wanted to buy one of her own children and regarded it as a joke, said Hill. The woman said she would pay R20 000 for a child. According to Hill it seemed "as if the woman was employed by a white man".

Muti or paedophilia

When the domestic worker received another call after the Hills had moved, she realised these people were serious. The "buyer", a woman, said she had visited Hill's previous residence in search of the domestic worker, that she knew at what times the couple went to work and returned home and at what time the children got home from school.

The domestic worker only then informed Hill about the calls.

Hill reported it to the police and made a note in the incident book.

Superintendent Anton Booysen, KwaZulu-Natal co-ordinator for psychologically motivated crimes, said the incident was a matter of concern and that it could be linked to muti or paedophilia.

A magistrate from Pinetown recently heard in a bail application that an alleged sangoma had paid five men R9 000 for somebody's ear, said Booysen.

This woman and the men were standing trial for the murder of nine woman to the south of the city.
