I recommend reading The Power of NOW by Eckhart Tolle- it's a truly wonderful book.
'To Live in the Moment' has been mis-interpreted and used out of context for a while but the meaning behind it is important. Living in the Moment is actually to be fully aware of everything happening around you at this very moment bothe externally AND internally.
The Internal Awareness or the Awareness of the Self is the most fundamental part of 'Living in the Moment' and without this you will be somewhere else- out of time!
When we think about things, when we get Emotional about things, we are not Living in the Present or the NOW- we are living in the Past or the Future... these are Illusions!
True Reality exists only in this moment, in the NOW, and nowhere else except inside our Minds. Our Minds can trick us into believing we are in the 'moment' when in actual fact we are 're-living' a moment in the Past or hoping for a particular outcome in the Future.
Allow everything to occur as it occurs, surrender control, observe your thoughts and Emotions without judgement and Love everything and everyone in this moment and you will be 'Living in the Moment'
It's not easy....but it IS possible!!
Much Love to YOu,
Jay

I wish to live my life in this manner, I am haunted by trauma from the past and fear of the future.
I have had a quite spiritual day (albeit on the back of a comedown- that's another story) Tears and smiles. Crazy mood swings. I want to be me and to be free and live in the moment and stay positive but I have such inner conflict and my mood swing violently. The drugs I know don't help and I am seeking to become 100% substance free.
Today I saw some good stuff about the power of positive thinking, the law of attraction, the power of forgiveness etc. I need a personal revolution. I have wallowed in pain for too long and affronted the gift of life.

Might I suggest "anchoring"? When you have good day or moment, be aware of how you feel, how your face feels, examine every aspect of how you feel at that time, whilst pressing you thumb and forefinger together. Take time to make sure you have anchored your thoughts and feelings.
When you have bad thoughts or a bad time press your thumb and forefinger together again to help you recall how you felt at a good time.
It is very difficult to live in the moment sometimes, if not damn near impossible. I have the problem of living in the future especially when I am excited about something I am about to do or going somewhere. (I am currently living in next weekend as I'm away again) But for times of less excitement anchoring helped me cope with mild stress.
I havent found anything prescribed of otherwise which helps with full blown stress though and I just tend to practice in the church of avoidance at the those times. (just avoid - it isnt what you're "supposed" to do lol)
Hope that helps.
[as an aside can anyone explain to me the benefits or otherwise of salvia - i do not know what it is but im guessing its grass, I may have spelled it wrongly]

NO this wil just confuse the issue even more.
Let go of the past and let the future take care of itself :)
Enjoy the now by being fully present. When you are reliving the past or planning the future, you cannot appreciate the beauty of NOW.
NOW is all we have. Feel it, embrace it, love it and don't waste a nanosecond :):)

Just be yourself, concentrate, experience what ever it is you're doing that's the now the moment, forget the past and future for a bit. Of course you can't stay in this state of mind for too long( the now the moment ) It's obvious why? The past and present are just as important as the now and the moment. They all play a part of our reality, one cannot exist without the other, for us to live a life and function as a human.
BTW, remember this at times.......time keeps on slipping into the future :)

We can never forget the past but we can let it go. I believe, that the experiences we have had and the lessons we have learned are only relevant in that they brought us to this moment, and how we experience and act in this moment is going to mould how our future unfolds.
Interesting topic with many different perspectives

tolle rocks!
I have been feeling weird for the past 3 days. I say weird because I have never experienced a feeling quite like what I am currently experiencing. i feel so positive. I feel like I have an energy rushing through me and this can be brought on intensly just by thinking. From my stomach to the tips of my fingers and toes. Its amazing. euphoric. no fear for the future. just excitement. Go with the flow. Don't think where its gonna lead you, just embrace everything ou encounter with the same positivity.

That's right- allow your Life to unfold and experience every event, every moment and every feeling with positivity, Joy and Freedom. Your Life is unfolding in the most beautiful way and accepting and allowing these things to occur is the only way to truly be free and experience the MAGNITUDE of your Creation!!
Acknowledge the thoughts you have, be aware of how they make you feel and don't judge yourself by them. Just listen to your self and know that if you are thinking about an event that 'may' happen or something that 'once' happened, then you are experiencing your Mind at work. This is not to be avoided but be aware of what is going on in there because that is the only place it exists... inside your Mind! It isn't real, it isn't happening now and remembering this is important.
You are Beauty. Pure Love. Glowing Consciousness in a World of more Beauty, Love and other Conscious Beings experiencing the same as you but on many different levels.
Breathe, Smile, Look, Smell, Touch, Feel, Observe and Flow
Much Love,

Sometimes music helps and this a good tune even if the singer has become ugly with the money (or something?)
to me it says trust yourself but take from it what you will.

at the job i just quit,
i worked with this girl who also said she was "living in the moment"
and i'm quite heavily into the eckhart tolle stuff for a year or so now already,
but really couldn't understand at all what she meant with it.
i'm sure i would have understould what she meant some time ago,
because then there still was more conceptualizing of my mind....
but now talking about "living this moment" just seems crazy to me.
is there anything else besides --- this moment --- then ?
the last 8 months my personality seems to be rapidly melting into the ocean of nothingness.
i'm becoming more crazy by the second... it is the price one pays to ass-end.
i've never read any of tolles books though,
GANGAJI - the diamond in your pocket was all i read and all i needed.
- http://users.telenet.be/psy/muziek/learnmeditation - this file also helped me in the beginning to learn how to "meditate".

This guy speaks a lot of common sense re: being in the present. At the end he adds his personal analogy of that state of being, but it being a construct of his own mind/perspective/interpretation, it doesn't affect/colour/defines generally, the basic state of being in the present available to everyone.
