The average downstream speed received by UK households is just 57 per cent of the average advertised rate, according to Ofcom research.
Data from the regulator's hardware-based performance monitoring network shows that while the average broadband package is sold as "up to" 7.1Mbit/s, it actually delivers 4.1Mbit/s.
The UK average is up from 3.6Mbit/s in January however, when Ofcom released its first set of figures.
In rural regions, the gap between marketing and reality is wider, with an average downstream speed of 3.3Mbit/s. In urban areas the mean is 4.6Mbit/s.

But of course, the fraudsters will hide behind the "up to" words in their marketing and contractual offers. Let me guess how their "claims/defence" would sound ...
"Up to" means in optimal circumstances ... and given your line quality, your distance from the exchange, blah, blah, blah .. those optimal conditions have not been possible ... but if they WERE possible, you'd get the maximum speed, as advertised ... :rolleyes:

there is nothing the phone companies can do about this until the entire UK has its wiring updated.
the press is just making something out of nothing to make people consider that the net has too many problems, a better alternative must soon appear.
look for all of the "internet breeds terrorism" crap too.
im close to the exchange, and pay for 16mb. i download at 1.6mb/sec. can stream HD tv and download dvd's in about an hour. if they just update the lines of people further than the exchange, theres really no need for anyone to need internet which is faster than this.

I agree with what you say..
When the new 21CN comes along....I feel most of the truth movement websites will not be accessible....All our internet will be under state control like China...

Mine is capped after downloading around 3 gig the speed drops from 10mbit to 2mbit. virgin suck

I'm on Virgin Media as well 20mb. Runs at 19. something or other. Then they start throttling after 3pm. Cunts
Have to download all my HBO Tv seriessss well before then.:D
Cant live without watching Supernatural.

I live in Hull where Kingston Communications run an illegal monopoly and we are unable to get a BT line.
I pay 18 quid a month for half a megabit DSL.
Ofcom won't touch them for some reason.
I reckon Common Purpose could have something to do with it.
If this happened anywhere else in the country they'd be down on them like a ton of bricks.

Virgin halve your d/load speed between around three until around eleven o'clock, so if you're paying for two meg you get just under half of what you pay for, at the moment I am downloading at around 900kb, not even 1Mb, I think I am being ripped off but there's no alternative unless you know someone clever at IT who can set you up an alternative modem that (bear with me on this 'cos I don't know exactly how it works) can access an alternative mac address which you can then use at twenty meg download speed:D! Apparently the modems are available on ebay;) but I can't give more details 'cos as I said I've got a mate who does all that sort of stuff for me;)

It's pretty easy to do I know, sorry don't know anyone that does it tho. the old white modems are the choice but the newer surfboard works too you need to sniff an IP from a near by area. All info is online as always

Wonder if they liked it if we did the same. I pay £15 per month for my internet. , but i may sent an email saying that im billed at £15, but they may only get up £15.... £9.99 from me i reckon;)

Trials for mandatory filtering would never be accepted in an academic statistics journal
The Federal Government’s ISP filter trials lack proper methodology and are not representative, according to experts in statistics and testing from two of Australia’s leading universities.
The criticisms come after two of the nine ISPs participating revealed only 15 of their customers, which in one case was 1 per cent of the total, chose to have their Internet filtered.
The vast majority of ISPs also used an opt-in system that requires users wanting to be filtered to request it.
“I would not have confidence in any of the results they find because of the way the sample has been constructed,” expert in statistics and senior lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology, Dr Daniel Johnson, said.
