This is another one of those coincidences that I came across some time ago, while researching Arches.
Joseph Colombo was the leader of the Colombo crime family, one of the major Mafia crime families. He started the Italian-American Civil Rights League after accusing the FBI of harassing Italian-Americans because they had increased scrutiny and surveillance of his activities. The league gained national recognition and even gained the support of Frank Sinatra.

Then one day a huge crowd gathered in Columbia Circle, New York City, to listen to Joe Colombo speak, and as he stepped up to the podium to address them, a gunman disguised as a journalist, later identified as Jerome Johnson, stepped forward and shot Colombo. The gunman didn't get far - he was caught and restrained on the spot.

Columbus Circle - Notice the goddess Victory in gold to the left.
But THEN! Another gunman steps out from the crowd, shoots and kills Jerome Johnson! The second gunman got away, and has never been identified. This little mystery has never been solved. Joe Colombo didn't die immediately. He lay in a coma for seven years and then passed on.

The statue of Columbus stands in the middle of the circle. Note the winged being and the globe near the base
This whole scenario reminds me a lot of the JFK incident.
