This could be a health topic but it does concern survival. A good hard hike has been known to cause heart attacks for people who are not fit enough. Most people of 'average' or below average fitness, whether overweight or not, speak of things like heart palpitation etc.

I have observed many people who go hunting etc. who can't climb a hill and it makes me wonder what would happen without their trucks or ATV? The simple fact is he who covers more miles is better off in the wilderness and most people are liable to injure themselves due to lack of strength and heart endurance.

Pretty simple issue, but I haven't seen it brought up. A normal man should be able to run a mile without effort and climb/hike more than a dozen. In our evolutionary past we regularly covered 20 miles a day, or at least that equivalent between one settlement to the next. Think about how far off most people are from this now, and it becomes clear how much the outdoorsmen has an advantage with good conditioning.

I am in high agreement with you Metacomet.

One way I suggest that one tries to discover their own level of fitness would be to walk everywhere for a week. That is to say that one should forgo their wheeled transport in favour of walking or running. If you work a long way from home then dont worry about the trips on wheels to work, but instead you should not use trasport for one day on your homeward journey, or get off early and start from a place closer to home. I suggest that you face home on your first few trips as it can be demoralising to go away from home at first.

Also. I have said this in the past and will write it down again for you all. And that is this; if you are at work and 'something' happens, just how do you get home? Do you think that you could trust the roads to be clear? Will the trains be running? If you live on the coast and work inland, how the hell will you make it in one afternoon?
I suggested having a grab-bag at work at all times, and a cheap bike padlocked outside, or a fold-up bike in a place of safety at work.

What would you do?
