Artillery shells fired by the Sri Lankan troops have hit a makeshift hospital in the troubled northern war zone, killing at least 91 civilians, medics say.

A government health official said Saturday 87 patients and bystanders were also wounded in the lethal attack.

The hospital is inside rebel-held areas but is run by the Colombo heath ministry.

A Tamil source has confirmed the same location and casualty toll as the government doctors.

A military spokesman, Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, however, denied the report, saying the armed forces were only using small arms to seize the remaining territory held by the separatists.

The development comes amid mounting international concern about the plight of civilians trapped in a tiny strip of land in northeastern Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan military claims that it is in the final stages of bringing to an end the over two-decade-long civil war.
