Hello everyone, :)
Im sure many of you have seen this. I haven't come across this info before. What are your thoughts on it? Has anyone been successful in putting this thing together? I look forward to responses on this one. Thanks.

Hullo steppingout. Welcome!
These sites are popping up all over the place, I have noticed. There is nothing wrong with these sites as they can help the uninformed to quickly gather together the 'relative' stuff to do the task. That is a good thing.
It all then depends on whether one wants it 'on a plate' for 50 bux, or that they are willing to reserch for free (other than time) on the www.
When doing it without help, one is more informed (when you can get your head around the thing) in the long run. One has seen all the vairables that others have come up with and has made their own decision to go this way or that. More informed is the key here.
By paying for info, one runs the 'risk' of missing out on the 'adventure' of the discovery of what they 'truly' need for themselves. Sure, you dont have to do (in some cases) any leg work, and you might be getting all the knowlage that the 'seller' has been through, but you are missing out on the why they got to that point in the last instace.
All info on the web is there for the price of subcription to the web, I say use it.
:) Above is my view, now more of you. What is it that you wish to do? Are you interested in home produced power? There are a few folk on these pages that can help in many diverse ways.

Thanks Tom. You are right, the times I have tried to do something my own way has always turned out to be the best way, with little shortcuts and pretty much doing it my way.
i was thinkin about being self-reliant in terms of electricty source and while i was doing the search this is what I came up with. I know theres probably other ways to do it, so Ill keep researching. If anyone has any suggestions, they are more than welcome. : )

Hello Steppinout and welcome.
Check out this man's ingenuity. The story is on Ananova, a site that highlights unusual or humorous stories but I don't regard this man's story as humorous but ingenious. You can see his invention by clicking on the link:
http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_2360667.html
Ananova:
Beer and sunshine land farmer in hot water
A Chinese farmer has made his own solar-powered water heater out of beer bottles and hosepipes.
"I invented this for my mother. I wanted her to shower comfortably," says Ma Yanjun, of Qiqiao village, Shaanxi province.
Ma's invention features 66 beer bottles attached to a board. The bottles are connected to each other so that water flows through them.
Sunlight heats the water as is passes slowly through the bottles before flowing into the bathroom as hot water, reports China Economy Network.
Ma says it provides enough hot water for all three members of his family to have a shower every day.
And more than 10 families in the village have already followed suit and installed their own versions of Ma's invention.

You forgot the link Dude111. :p
I am glad that you used the term Self-reliant steppingout. Being so, means that you are happy to include all aspects of 'going it alone'. It also includes relying on the fact that one might have to use others for the day-to-day running of your existance. And thus, my point....:) There are different aprouches to different problems.
To create leccy, one could; use own-grown rape seed to power a genny, or use the sun to charge batteries, or wind, or water, or forego the need for the leccy at all and use the wind, water, sun to heat or run drive systems that uses the harnesed power to drive tools and the like. No telly there though .
You need to decide just how much power you require. A simple example below is the one that I am aiming for (but indeed, could change if it requires it).
For food and medicinal..well duh! I will grow my own, only swapping or selling to get foods that I cant or dont want to grow. Food for me can occupy a half acre, with one more acre for harvested foods, and one more acre for animal feed.
For heat....I will use a wood burnng stove to provide Heat and cooking heat and hot water. The wood is grown on my own land. I will need at least 1 acre (more is prefered) with pollarding and the like, one can get more than one needs from an acre when established (5-8yrs).
For clothing and cloth....I will barter.
For house hard-ware (reparing and replacing chairs, walls ect)....I use my land to grow it all (yeah! right  easier said than done...but not impossible).
For leccy I am looking into a battery set-up, powered by....? I want it to be water, by the use of a turbine, as it can be the cheapest, and has the fewest moving parts. But I am looking at a magetic generator that again powers and charges batteries.
But then when I look at what I need leccy for, it realy boils down to labour saving devices like a power saw or drill, or entertainment like the radio or cd player. I am trying to go it without power tools but entertainment is definitly required for my sanity and I cant play a fiddle just yet.
Also leccy might be needed for the intrum period needed to set-up my life style. Things like an oven for plates, or power tools for big things like a plainer or sander.
These are a few thing to whet your whistle.
Tom.
