Spaghetti Junction 'to be visible from space'
Birmingham's notorious Spaghetti Junction may soon have something in common with some of the world's greatest man-made structures – by being visible from space.

Does that look like an eye in the centre? Thinking along the lines of Rik Clay's work.

It has long been a bane of motorists and the target for ridicule thanks to its drab 1970s concrete architecture.

But now council officials are planning to illuminate the interchange to transform it into a landmark of the Midlands, as part of a £6 billion makeover of Britain's second city.

Clive Dutton, director of planning at Birmingham City Council, said: "It is an extraordinary structure, one that is known around the country, but we feel as though it can have a massive impact around the world.

"It's an ambitious project, but what a thrill it would be to think that astronauts in space would be able to look down on earth and spot Spaghetti Junction glowing at night."

The plan is currently at the drawing board stage, and officials are still unsure how many lights would be required. The Highways Agency would have to be consulted to make sure they do not dazzle motorists or keep locals residents awake at night.

The council has already applied for lottery funding for the project, and hopes that private investors will also contribute to keep public expenditure to a minimum. If everything runs smoothly the lights could be switched on as early as next year.

Spaghetti Junction – otherwise known as the Gravelly Hill Interchange – was opened in 1972. Its network of flyovers link the M6, Aston Expressway, A38 and A5127 above two railway lines, three canals and two rivers.

I remember in Good Omens by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman they joked that the character Crowley moved the surveyors stakes during the night to form an occult symbol out of Spaghetti Junction, so that when a traffic jam occurred it would result in a emanation of low level evil.

Concidentally Ozzy "Prince of Darkness" Osbourne's family home was less than two miles from Spaghetti Junction in Lodge Rd in Aston. So if he says hes playing a gig at Villa park it might be wise to not be in the area.

I post this has nobody in their right mind would want to light that eyesore unless it was for Satanic purposes.
