WARNING: Before you read this post, through away your silly modern ideas about what this symbol represents. It is ancient, multiple thousands of years old. Older probably than you can even imagine. It does not mean what someone sensationally assumes it does, simply because it has been used by Nazis in recent history. The Nazis even purposely changed the meaning of the symbol from "Sun" to "victory" and inverted it. So, they weren't using the real symbol.

I have recently become fascinated with the "Sig rune" - an ancient Norse run that was used in "magic." Originally this symbol fascinated me because David Bowie used it when he painted it on his face during his time as the "Aladdin Sane" character, and now the pop star Lady GaGa is using it, although sparingly. Of course, the Nazi's also used the symbol. They were heavily into occult mysticism. The swastiki is an ancient symbol for peace, although it is reversed - which is highly appropriate, considering the Nazis and Hitler. Without really getting into the truth about World War II, I will cut to the part relevant to this post! The Nazis used the sig rune because, according to Wikipedia:
Guido von List in his "Armanen runes" called the rune "Sig", apparently based on Sigel, thus changing the concept associated with it from "Sun" to "victory" (German Sieg), arriving at a sequence "Sig", "Tyr" in his row, yielding Sigtyr (God of victory), a name of Odin. Under this name of "Sig rune", the s-rune played a certain role in Fascist symbolism, most notably in the badge of the Schutzstaffel (SS), but this is credited to the Wiligut runic row of Karl Maria Wiligut as opposed to Guido von List.

The SS Sig Runes design was created in 1931 when Walter Heck, a Sturmführer in the SS, drew two reversed and inverted Sig Runes side by side and noticed the similarity to the initials of the SS. Heck sold the rights of the Sig Runes to the SS for 2.5 Reichsmarks, and the runes were quickly adopted as the insignia of the Schutzstaffel and became one of the most commonly used forms of SS unit insignia.
This is the same story that is all over the web. It's bizarre because the Sig rune is ancient, thousands of years old, and yet the only information you can find on this beautiful expression is in relation to the atrocities committed by the Nazis.
This symbol is ancient, and represents the Norse God who I believe is correspondent to the Greek God Apollo, who is the Sun God. I believe this spirit was the same in all ancient cultures, and thus this symbol represents Apollonian ideas - progressive, graceful, peaceful, knowing, etc. - throughout all cultures. Like a lightning bolt hitting the earth, it is a flash of God - the divine spark of inspiration. That is what the Sig rune represents to me, and what is represented to many ancient cultures throughout the past.
It is like the hand of God touches the earth, and the spirit of the ancient gods - Art, Creativity, Intelligence, Wisdom, given anthropomorphic names like Mercury, Apollo, Aphrodite, etc. - is now manifesting in man. This symbol heralds evolution, and awakens in all those who consider it and meditate on it an energetic truth. It is like a shock of electricity, god-made-man by the will of man alone - purposeful, strategic evolution.
That's what it represents to me anyway. Here is an awesome story about the Norse God Balder who it is associated with. I'll post who I think the gods are correspondent to at the end.

When Balder dreamt of his upcoming death. His mother Frigga tried to prevent his death by getting an oath from every creature, object and force in Nature, not to hurt him.
She got an oath from all but the malicious trickster LOKI who was jealous of Balder's beauty.
During one of the games, in which Balder stood in the middle of the circle of gods/goddesses they threw harmless arrows, knives and darts at him.
Loki made a poisoned dart from the only plant that Frigga did not get an oath from, the mistletoe.
Loki hid behind blind Hodar who wanted to join in the fun. Loki gave Hodar the poisoned dart and directed his aim at Balder. When the poisoned dart thrown by Hodar struck Balder, he fell dead.

Odin sent Hermod to Hel to try and get Balder released. Only if all the gods/goddesses wept for him was Hella's answer. Loki refused and Balder stayed in Hel.
Loki was punished.

Hermod is clearly Hermes, Odin is Zeus, Loki is Hades... that's a little simplistic as these gods all have multiple names (by my research Zeus is the biblical Ba'al and at the same time the biblical Lord YVHV, which is hilarious), but you get the picture.
It seems qualities that are attributed to both Apollo, and his son Asceplius (a prototype for the JeZeus myth) are present in Balder. He seems to represent the same train of thought, however. Asceplius would be derivative of Apollo and thus come from the same spirit, which I believe the Bible may refer to as "Apollyon" in Revelation.
Apollyon may in fact be the universal cure-all.
