Here's an example of how easy it is to find gematria that seem to have
meaning. This is not based on any tradition I'm aware of -- other than the
historical fact that the best _approximation_ for pi known in the ancient
world was
355/113 = 3.141592920354...
while the modern decimal expansion for pi is 3.14159265359....

Thus, the ancient approximation is good to 7 places after the
decimal. That's pretty good, by any standard.

There are some Hebrew words that could be understood to be metaphors for
a circle and a radius (or diameter). For example: the gematria for
"year", Shin-Nun-He, Shana, is 355. A year, of course, was a complete
circle of the heavens, which our sages certainly were aware of because
this knowledge was necessary for the calendar.

The Egyptians (did the Pharoahs know Hebrew?) might have been taken with
the gematria for Pharoah, Pe-Resh-Ayin-He, who of course was known to
command the land of Egypt. Lower Egypt is sometimes taken to be the
near-90-degree quadrant of a circle, centered near Cairo/Giza, and
extending to the Mediterranean shore (including Alexandria). So,
metaphorically, Pharoah is somewhat of a circle, or a quadrant of a
circle, also. The gematria for Pharoah is 355 (Pe-Resh-Ayin-He).

One could think of the radius (or diameter) of a circle as being a kind
of edifice, extension, or even "statue", seated at the center of the
circle, and extending to its perimeter. A Hebrew word for "statue" is
cHuQaH, cHet-Qof-He. Its gematria is 113.

Likewise, for an earring, which hangs from the quasi-circular lobe of
the ear. It also could be analogous to a radius. The gematria for
earring, a-gil, Ayin-Gimel-Yud-Lamed, is also 113.

Also, Pe-Lamed-Gimel can mean "to divide" or "half", which is what a
diameter does. Again, Pe-Lamed-Gimel = 113.

In the case of Pharoah, it's not too far-fetched to presume that he
would have set up a "statue" (113) to himself, Pharoah (355), in or near
Giza. In fact, we find what some archeologists think is a statue of
Pharoah -- the Sphinx -- at Giza, and we also find the Great Pyramid.
The PYramid is supposed to be some sort monument or tomb to Pharoah, and
the pyramid's dimensions, as many have noted, include excellent
architectural approximations for pi.

Martin Gardner used to write a column in Scientific American where he
sometimes presented the fictional "Dr. Matrix," who gave all kinds of
astonishing numerical coincidences. Gardner was trying to point out
that it was very easy to find apparently interesting
number-relationships, even when there was no real relationship.

So, what I'm suggesting here _cannot_ be proven to be meaningful, based
merely on the fact that "year," ShaNaH, divided by PeLaG or PeLeG, or
"Pharoah" divided by "statue," equal an excellent approximation for pi.

On the other hand, I expect that if our scholars were to investigate the
full range of Talmudic and Kabbalistic references, we might well find
that our sages were aware of these gematria coincidences, and might even
have had good reason to understand them as meaningful. In other words,
the arithmetic coincidences prove nothing, unless there's a solid
context in our tradition. (In this case, I think there might be, but in
most other cases, that's not likely, IMO.)

now appears to be our main source for knowledge these days (:-)).

The inclusion of this verse follows the original version of Aleinu. In
the year 1400, a baptized Jew, no doubt seeking to prove his loyalty to
the Church, spread the slander that this passage was meant to slur
Xianity. He 'proved' his contention by the coincidence that the
numerical value of varik, emptiness, is 316, the same as y'shu (yud shin
vav), the Hebrew name of their messiah. The charge was refuted time and
again, particularly by Manasseh ben Israel, the seventeenth century
scholar, but repeated persecutions and Church insistence, backed by
governmental enforcement, caused the line to be dropped from most
Ashkenazic siddurim. While most congregations have not returned it to
the Aleinu prayer, some prominent authorities, among them Rabbi Yehoshua
Leib Diskin, insist that Aleinu be recited in its original form (World
of Prayer; Siach Yitzchak).

Once again, such an explanation, while perhaps a good explanation of the
pasuk in Melachim, is irreconcilable with the gemara, which insists that
the YSS was perfectly round, and infinitesimally thin (rejecting the
theory that the circumference was measured on the inside, and the
diameter included the thickness of the walls), and that the ratio was
precisely 3, with not even the tiniest bit of rounding. And unlike the
Aron, whose strange geometry is cited as a great miracle, the geometry
of the YSS must be perfectly normal, since it is used as a proof that pi
= ~3 (or, according to the gemara, 3); if its geometry was miraculous,
then the natural value of pi could just as easily be ~4, or ~2 or 20, or
any other number!

In gematria, Nun represents the number 50. Its final form represents 700 but this is rarely used, Tav and Shin (400+300) being used instead.

Nun as an abbreviation can stand for neqevah, feminine. In medieval Rabbinic writings, Nun Sophit (Final Nun) stood for "Son of" (Hebrew ben or ibn).

Nun is also one of the seven letters which receive a special crown (called a tagin) when written in a Sefer Torah. See Shin, Ayin, Teth, Gimmel, Zayin, and Tzadi.

A star's maximum mass is set by the tendency of large stars to drive strong winds from their surface. As the size of a star increases, the luminosity of the star increases. The radiation from a star exerts pressure on the atmosphere of the star, and if the pressure is great enough, a substantial wind is created that drives off a large fraction of the star's mass. Estimates place the maximum size of a star at around 350 times the mass of the sun.

There are very few parameters other than mass that determine how a star changes during its existence. One is the star's composition. A star by mass is three parts hydrogen for every part helium. A tiny fraction of a star is composed of other elements, such as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, all collectively termed as metals in the astronomer's jargon. Metals influence the rate at which hydrogen is converted into helium, they affect the escape of energy from the center of the star, and they control the stellar wind coming off the surface of the largest stars. The final and least important parameter that determines the life of a star is its angular momentum.

The appearance of a star as it ages can change dramatically, because, while the core always shrinks as a star ages, its outer layers can either shrink or expand, depending on the amount of energy released by the core. When the rate at which energy is generated by the core increases, the outer layers of the star puff-up until the energy can leak through these layers at a rate equal to the rate at which it is created. The temperature at the surface generally drops, but because of the star's larger surface area, the total power radiated by the star's surface remains equal to the power generated as thermal energy at the star's core. The converse occurs if the energy generation decreases, with the surface of the star becoming smaller and bluer. As a star ages and burns through its different elements, the power generated within the star varies, so the size of the star varies.

A star begins the fusion stage of its life by converting hydrogen into helium. A star in this state is called a main sequence star, because on a chart of surface temperature versus luminosity, a hydrogen-burning star falls on a line called the main sequence. Low luminosity stars on the main sequence, which are low-mass stars, have a low surface temperature, and are therefore red; on the other hand, high luminosity stars on the main sequence, which are high-mass stars, have a have a high temperature, and are therefore blue.

Once a star exhausts its supply of hydrogen at its core, the core collapses until nuclear reactions begin that convert helium into carbon and oxygen. Outer layers of these stars continue to convert hydrogen into helium. A star in this stage produces more power than when it was on the main sequence, so its outer layers expand, making the star many times larger than previously. Such stars are in their red-giant phase, and while they produce more power, their larger surface area means that they are cooler and redder than before.

Yes, it's true.....God is now beginning to put 'the strong delusion' upon mankind and it's our fault because for the most part have hardened our hearts toward him.

There is no 'one single anti-christ' to come, there is no 'rapture' and there is no '7 year tribulation' period.

This month there is a total lunar eclipse, several planets do some fancy dancing around the Sun and this is "Meteor Month"!

If you connect the dots of the Big Dipper you will see the obvious pattern of a "dipper" or bowl with a handle.

Most importantly, the two stars farthest from the handle point to Polaris. They are often nicknamed "the Pointers" but their correct names are Merak and Dubhe. If you imagine a line from Merak through Dubhe and beyond, you will soon arrive at a star of similar brightness. That's Polaris - the North Star.
Be sure you go from Merak to Dubhe (from the bottom to the top of the Dipper), not the other way.
The apparent distance from Dubhe to Polaris is about the distance covered by the entire Big Dipper (maybe a little more).

Polaris is the brightest star in the Little Dipper which, like the Big Dipper, is not a true constellation. The Little Dipper is part of the constellation of Ursa Minor (the Little Bear).

While we are thinking about the northern sky and "fake constellations", I'd like to draw your attention to the stars of the Great Summer Triangle.

Look to the southeast of Polaris and you will notice three stars that immediately stick out - Vega, Deneb and Altair. Together they make up the Great Summer Triangle. Each of those three stars is in a different constellation.

Mercury starts the month rising about an hour before the Sun and, with a magnitude of about 0.6, Mercury might be seen before the sunrise.
However, each morning we find Mercury inching closer to the Sun until, on August 15th, Mercury goes through superior conjunction and becomes an evening object. As a planet moves from a morning object to an evening object it passes along the same "longitude" as the Sun. We call this "sky longitude" the Right Ascension or RA. When a planet and the Sun share the same RA we say the planet is in (solar) conjunction. When the planet moves through conjunction by passing on the far side of the Sun, as it does on August 15th, we say the planet is in superior conjunction and when it passes on the near side (our side) of the Sun we say the planet is in inferior conjunction. On average, Mercury goes through three superior conjunctions and three inferior conjunctions each year so this conjunction is no big deal. However, it does explain how Mercury switches from being a morning object to an evening object. Each morning after August 15th, Mercury sets after the Sun and by the end of the month Mercury sets about 40 minutes after the Sun so you might be lucky enough to see it (magnitude 1.4) in the dusk.

Mars has a magnitude of slightly less than one and spends most of August moving through Taurus (from west to east). Aldebaran, the brightest star in Taurus, has a magnitude of slightly more than one (so it is slightly dimmer than Mars).

After sunset you can see . . .

Venus sets less than an hour after sunset and is difficult to see in the evening sky. And, each evening it moves closer to the sunset until, on the 18th of August, Venus goes through inferior conjunction to become a morning object. Compare that to what happens with Mercury. It's the opposite conjunction in both direction and position when passing through the Sun's RA.

Saturn has a magnitude of around two or three this month so it is not very obvious, and it starts August pretty close to the sunrise. Indeed, each evening it gets closer to the Sun until, on August 21st, the ringed-planet goes through (superior) conjunction to become a morning object. Outer planets, such as Saturn, can only go through superior conjunctions.

Jupiter has a magnitude of -1.5 or brighter throughout the month and is the dominant object in Ophiuchus, just to the northeast of Antares (magnitude 1.6).

With magnification and experience you can see . . .

Uranus is in eastern Aquarius but it is at the limits of naked eye visibility (6.0 magnitude).

Neptune is in eastern Capricornus but its low magnitude (8.0) makes it impossible to see without optical aid and detailed maps.
On the 13th of August Neptune moves into opposition. That means the Earth will be positioned along a line (actually a plane) between the Sun and Neptune so, in theory, Neptune will be best positioned for viewing (if you have a good telescope). Otherwise, be aware that Neptune passes through your local meridian at your local midnight.

Pluto in on the northern edge of Sagittarius but with a magnitude of 14 it is well beyond the sight of all but the best telescopes.

New discoveries about another universe whose collapse appears to have given birth to the one we live in today will be announced in the early on-line edition of the journal Nature Physics on 1 July 2007 and will be published in the August 2007 issue of the journal's print edition.

"My paper introduces a new mathematical model that we can use to derive new details about the properties of a quantum state as it travels through the Big Bounce, which replaces the classical idea of a Big Bang as the beginning of our universe," said Martin Bojowald, assistant professor of physics at Penn State. Bojowald's research also suggests that, although it is possible to learn about many properties of the earlier universe, we always will be uncertain about some of these properties because his calculations reveal a "cosmic forgetfulness" that results from the extreme quantum forces during the Big Bounce.

The idea that the universe erupted with a Big Bang explosion has been a big barrier in scientific attempts to understand the origin of our expanding universe, although the Big Bang long has been considered by physicists to be the best model.

As described by Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, the origin of the Big Bang is a mathematically nonsensical state -- a "singularity" of zero volume that nevertheless contained infinite density and infinitely large energy. Now, however, Bojowald and other physicists at Penn State are exploring territory unknown even to Einstein -- the time before the Big Bang -- using a mathematical time machine called Loop Quantum Gravity.

This theory, which combines Einstein's Theory of General Relativity with equations of quantum physics that did not exist in Einstein's day, is the first mathematical description to systematically establish the existence of the Big Bounce and to deduce properties of the earlier universe from which our own may have sprung. For scientists, the Big Bounce opens a crack in the barrier that was the Big Bang.

"Einstein's Theory of General Relativity does not include the quantum physics that you must have in order to describe the extremely high energies that dominated our universe during its very early evolution," Bojowald explained, "but we now have Loop Quantum Gravity, a theory that does include the necessary quantum physics." Loop Quantum Gravity was pioneered and is being developed in the Penn State Institute for Gravitational Physics and Geometry, and is now a leading approach to the goal of unifying general relativity with quantum physics. Scientists using this theory to trace our universe backward in time have found that its beginning point had a minimum volume that is not zero and a maximum energy that is not infinite. As a result of these limits, the theory's equations continue to produce valid mathematical results past the point of the classical Big Bang, giving scientists a window into the time before the Big Bounce.

Quantum-gravity theory indicates that the fabric of space-time has an "atomic" geometry that is woven with one-dimensional quantum threads. This fabric tears violently under the extreme conditions dominated by quantum physics near the Big Bounce, causing gravity to become strongly repulsive so that, instead of vanishing into infinity as predicted by Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, the universe rebounded in the Big Bounce that gave birth to our expanding universe. The theory reveals a contracting universe before the Big Bounce, with space-time geometry that otherwise was similar to that of our universe today.

Bojowald found he had to create a new mathematical model to use with the theory of Loop Quantum Gravity in order to explore the universe before the Big Bounce with more precision. "A more precise model was needed within Loop Quantum Gravity than the existing numerical methods, which require successive approximations of the solutions and yield results that are not as general and complete as one would like," Bojowald explained. He developed a mathematical model that produces precise analytical solutions by solving of a set of mathematical equations.

In addition to being more precise, Bojowald's new model also is much shorter. He reformulated the quantum-gravity models using a different mathematical description, which he says made it possible to solve the equations explicitly and also turned out to be a strong simplification. "The earlier numerical model looked much more complicated, but its solutions looked very clean, which was a clue that such a mathematical simplification might exist," he said. Bojowald reformulated quantum gravity's differential equations -- which require many calculations of numerous consecutive small changes in time -- into an integrable system -- in which a cumulative length of time can be specified for adding up all the small incremental changes.

The model's equations require parameters that describe the state of our current universe accurately so that scientists then can use the model to travel backward in time, mathematically "un-evolving" the universe to reveal its state at earlier times. The model's equations also contain some "free" parameters that are not yet known precisely but are nevertheless necessary to describe certain properties. Bojowald discovered that two of these free parameters are complementary: one is relevant almost exclusively after the Big Bounce and the other is relevant almost exclusively before the Big Bounce. Because one of these free parameters has essentially no influence on calculations of our current universe, Bojowald colludes that it cannot be used as a tool for back-calculating its value in the earlier universe before the Big Bounce.

The two free parameters, which Bojowald found were complementary, represent the quantum uncertainty in the total volume of the universe before and after the Big Bang. "These uncertainties are additional parameters that apply when you put a system into a quantum context such as a theory of quantum gravity," Bojowald said. "It is similar to the uncertainty relations in quantum physics, where there is complimentarity between the position of an object and its velocity -- if you measure one you cannot simultaneously measure the other." Similarly, Bojowald's study indicates that there is complementarity between the uncertainty factors for the volume of the universe before the Big Bounce and the universe after the Big Bounce. "For all practical purposes, the precise uncertainty factor for the volume of the previous universe never will be determined by a procedure of calculating backwards from conditions in our present universe, even with most accurate measurements we ever will be able to make," Bojowald explained. This discovery implies further limitations for discovering whether the matter in the universe before the Big Bang was dominated more strongly by quantum or classical properties.

"A problem with the earlier numerical model is you don't see so clearly what the free parameters really are and what their influence is," Bojowald said. "This mathematical model gives you an improved expression that contains all the free parameters and you can immediately see the influence of each one," he explained. "After the equations were solved, it was rather immediate to reach conclusions from the results."

Bojowald reached an additional conclusion after finding that at least one of the parameters of the previous universe did not survive its trip through the Big Bounce -- that successive universes likely will not be perfect replicas of each other. He said, "the eternal recurrence of absolutely identical universes would seem to be prevented by the apparent existence of an intrinsic cosmic forgetfulness."

Well everyone seems to be talking about the end times and how bad everything is at the moment but nobody seems to be talking about the good. The end times are only in Revelation, only 1 of the 66 books of the Bible. Maybe people are forgetting the whole picture, that God will overturn this corrupt world, the world leaders, the poverty, the famine, the death and destruction and a new Kingdom of God will come about. This place will have no evil and will be pure bliss, but it is only there for people who believe in God and Jesus Christ. Get to know your God before it's too late. Repent and mean it.
