Health bosses in Norfolk have hailed the high take-up of a cervical cancer jab as a success, but are urging more young women to ensure they get vaccinated this month.

Within the 12 to 13 age group there has so far been an 85pc uptake of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in Norfolk, a total of 3,533 first doses, and 73pc for the 17 to 18 age group - a total of 80pc across all ages so far.
In January the third wave of the HPV vaccination campaign will be launched with 18 clinic days being held at Connexions centres right across NHS Norfolk's area. The wave is targeted at young women aged 17 to 18, who are no longer in formal or further education.
Girls aged 12 to 13 or 17 to 18 in full-time education that have so far missed the opportunity to be vaccinated can ask their GP for advice and will either be given the vaccine within the GP surgery or be referred onto one of the Connexions clinics.
Maureen Carson, NHS Norfolk's director of women's and children's health, said: “We are really delighted that our campaign has been such a success so far and that these young girls and women have taken this opportunity to protect themselves in this way.
“This high level of uptake is also a credit to the work of the Norfolk Community Health Care (NCHC) immunisation team who have been working so hard over the past few months to deliver this vaccine to as many girls as possible within schools and colleges, right across our patch. They will of course be leading the next wave of the campaign in January.
“Our results are looking very good at this stage but we do recognise there are many girls out there that we would still urge to get vaccinated. To those girls and young women, or their parents, we would say it is never too late to take up the offer of this vaccine.”
Today the Daniel Forster, whose sister Philippa died at the age of 30 in June 2005 from cervical cancer, said it was vitally important girls and young women ensured they got all three doses of the vaccination over about a six-month period.
Mr Forster, who works for a media production company in Norwich, helped to produce a promotional CD Rom with GlaxoSmithKline about their cervical cancer vaccine Cervarix®, which was sent out to thousands of health professionals.
The 46-year-old said: “It's really important to try to let the girls and the parents that there is a series of injections and the third is very important.
“For girls to be able to have it is wonderful - so not one girl goes through all the pain that my sister went through.”
