IF something catastrophic did happen, and there were only a few survivors here and there, and you were one of them, what skill would you bring to the new world?
I have become expert in a few things, if there is no-one to sue ;) or argue with, I could still bring my expert gardening skills to grow food and medicines for everybody, not being egotistic or wanting praise but for the 'greater good' if there is such a thing, (having to justify what I say as I go along has been a skill of mine for many years now.)
I am also an expert craftsman specialising in worling with wood.
What skill would you bring?

......and if it comes to the worst : survival, self defense (how many people are we going to have to fight off, in the country especially, when food is no longer available and people resort to violence out of desperation or greed)...
....but mainly knowing the land and where to find food and water and what to avoid.....handy in Australia.
http://www.childsafetyaustralia.com.au/children/backyardsafety/images/deathcap.jpg
The world's most poisonous mushroom is the Angel of Death or the Deathcap. It looks very similar to an edible field mushroom but eating a Death Cap could easily kill you.
Found around the roots of trees in the cooler locations of Australia in places such as Canberra and Melbourne.
After eating these type of Fungi a person will experience stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea with blood present.
Unless the amount eaten is very small, the person is likely to die in a few days.
Power to the peaceful.

I'm handy with weapons and good at manipulating people. Not bad skills to have in a budding civilization.
In seriousness, I've done extensive survival training, which I recommend everyone undergo for the coming years. Or even just go camping once in awhile, it won't hurt you. I've also practiced varying forms of energy work and physical and mental healing.

Spotting liars, double agents and that sort of thing. I have a knack for it and always have done, even early on in school I always knew when the teacher was lying. I don't do it by even looking at the person and this really confuses the liar because they use facial contact to falsify the impression that they are telling the truth. Instead I listen very carefully to subtle intonation in the person's voice. This is virtually impossible to disguise because it is involuntary.

Design & build any structure required...bomb shelter, house, bridge, dam etc etc out of anything, concrete, timber, steel, mud, straw, rock
Operate & repair any mobile equipment from a wheelbarrow to a combine harvester
Fix/repair/build pretty much anything like water pumps, artesian wells, fences, armaments, irrigation, waste disposal (septics),compound's,electronics, livestock handling facilities, gardens (hydro, soil, hothouse)
Invent stuff or make things out of bits & pieces like junk yard cars, machinery, labour saving devices - Mad Max type gear
Animal husbandry i.e cows, chickens, sheep, deer
Horticulture i.e fruit & nut trees, crops, hothouse
Alternative power generation - design & build
can teach others to shear sheep, milk & look after cows, weld, build, design, water hydrology, mechanics, timber milling & felling, horticulture, agriculture, arable farming, biodiesel making, electrical wiring, butchery, food preservation,

hey Space Monkey..yep, well sorta, am a builder by trade, but i get bored with my Job every 1 to 3 years or so, so i leave and find something else that interests me, soak up as much info as I can, then move on. At the moment I'm playing with Diesel engines (just about to refit the turbo out of my ute this afternoon). I can't stand not understanding how things work, so I find out.
plus have learned that everything you need to know is out there (or in here-self), you just gotta ask.

Damn right, sorta like Trinity in the Matrix movie when she downloads the "pilots" training for the helicopter, been able to do this for years. Basically I see everyone in this Matrix as the same as me, so if someone else can do it, so can I (we are all equals), it's only knowledge (matrix knowledge at that). But yep, pulled everything apart and put it back together again.
Sometimes the "off the shelf" toys are damn good though, why reinvent the wheel eh, just know how to fix it if the time comes.:D

Hey, think you'll find that a round/sphere house is the ultimate in balanced feng shui energy + a dome buried under about 2 meters of dirt is indestructible..like Nuke/weather catastrophe.
Granted some are a bit garish..yanks have a slightly different view on architecture to the rest of the world, but you just have to be creative.
Extremely energy efficient (helpful if fuel in short supply) and will last longer than your kids kids...if ya are serious about surviving a hostile world event then this is as good as it gets:D

Hey them, nice spread of food gathering there, I also am skilled at the fishing, I think the diesel engine knowledge would be well
good, if there was plenty of diesel left.
If you are serious about surviving, particularly if ya want to do it in a little bit of style and don't want to become a donkey pulling a dray round a paddock, then owning a diesel anything is the vehicle of choice..and knowing how to maintain and fix it is valuable knowledge.
Diesel's (any diesel from a VW golf to a combine harvester) will run on straight vegetable oil..any vege oil will do like canola, olive, jojba, sunflower etc etc...put it in the tank and go..so in the event of a catastrophe when people are killing each other for a tank of gas (Mad Max) you can be safely going about your business with your diesel car/ute/tractor/truck running on vege oil from your own crops.
My advice (if anyone wants it) buy a diesel vehicle, if you live in a colder climate buy a fuel tank warmer for the vehicle (stops vege oil solidifying in cold temps). Buy a mechanics workshop manual for your vehicle (these are like car repair books for dumbies..v easy to read and understand and will show you how every single component goes together, how to fix it and what it should look like when in a good condition..absolute necessity)
If you can stockpile a spare set of tyres, fanbelts, oil filters etc..and if you are real keen buy a whole engine and gearbox...or if you need more than 1 vehicle in your everyday life make sure you get a model that has the same engine..like I have a tractor & truck that have the same motor in them..makes them interchangeable.

I suppose the big question is would you like to have a lifestyle that gave some time to enjoy you time and the (to quote Festival spirits initial post)new world left in the event of a catastrophe or would all your time be taken providing food, shelter, healthcare, water etc for yourself and your family/group.
As our great great parents had to do..daylight till dusk working in the fields, cause in my mind thats the type of eventuality that could exist. So why not develop skills that would provide for some time and labour saving to occur and reward you with some time to just be. But maybe my view on things is bit to far fetched..*shrugs shoulders*..I dunno

I suppose the big question is would you like to have a lifestyle that gave some time to enjoy you time and the (to quote Festival spirits initial post)new world left in the event of a catastrophe or would all your time be taken providing food, shelter, healthcare, water etc for yourself and your family/group.

Creating and sustaining a habitat is part of being, not a toil that prevents it... what other creatures need combine harvester engines (your eg.) to create 'spare time' so they can be? Just be. Its a myth also that past generations toilled for subsistance like we do now with our 40 hours a week.

That's what I meant, they're totally lacking in aesthetic. But like you say, you have to be creative. Like, one of those covered in slate panels would look rather handsome IMO.

Isn't and wasn't agriculture one of the staples of the control pyramid? Or are you talking about small societies along the lines of the Hopi?

Was saying that past generations didn't have to toil like they do now. Working on a small holding growing veg for a few hours a day doesn't compare to 40 hours a week. There is a community in Italy that has rejected industrialisation, they live subsistence living, growing veg and crops in small holdings and work 3 hours a day... rest of the day they chill out drinking wine and playing music...theres no need for machinery at all... a madmax world would be shit imo, would sooner go back to our roots and reject all industrialisation, were civilisation to collapse (hear my prayers god!). Think I'm off tropic here, any excuse for a rant :o

I really dont understand these eschatological fantasies.
If this supposed scenario were to happen , I doubt anyone here would survive.
By the fact that they are all on the internet, therefore connected to a telephone system and electricity receiving device and hence in the midst of BABYLON!
The survivors of an armageddon hypothesis are probably living as far away from civilisation as possible
And are using their skills right now to "live their lives"
It can be done
I've turned this damned contraption off for a week because I felt it was seducing me and being a bit addictive!
I took a few days off work to meet the" People"that i'm fond of giving "Power" to(or summat)
Most ain't interested
But Some are!
Iv'e come to the fatalistic conclusion,
that you are either
Part of the PRoBLEM or
Part of the SoLUTION
I hate fence sitters(agnostics_human beings)
I love people that take sides(Atheists, christians, muslims, jews, buddists,ac tivists-human doings)
This scenario that you have created post apocalypse could easily be created
RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW
And it would be brilliant, creative peaceful
The way that we always knew
We should live in harmony, discord and love
Me, Id'e rather be surfing!
POWER TO THE PEOPLE
PEACE ON EARTH!

1. The branch of theology that is concerned with the end of the world or of humankind.
2. A belief or a doctrine concerning the ultimate or final things, such as death, the destiny of humanity, the Second Coming, or the Last Judgment.

I would have to say,
I really dont understand eschatological so I went and looked it up,
There is nothing eschatological about this thread, it seems it is far from it, the opposite, not the opposame.
Do you see cheeb, you are way off, this is about keeping mankind going, not the 'end' its about making people aware of the possibilities.
And that only. Perhaps the 'destiny of humanity' is my work, it is 'human' (apparently) to be mistaken, distracted, there is MUCH of that on this site, but we keep going nevertheless.
Some people see things negatively, some positively, me I try to find a balance, because I believe everything is for a good reason. Garth has provided XLNT advice for those that need that kind of advice, I am glad he said it for me, I did go through all the 'second engine' second set of spares ETC, but left it all alone years a go, there will be plenty of deisel vehicles knocking about in rural areas if the catastrophic did happen. (hopefully)
I do not believe that these kind of catastrophic events WILL happen, but I do believe that being aware of the possibilities WILL help.
Thanks garth and all the others for the good advice (especially building cobs)
That is something I am going to be doing shortly, Also the advice that a domed building under a small amount of earth was ONE of the messages I was hoping to see here. XLNT THANKS

Hi, i would bring many skills but on the other hand i would probably stay away from large groups for a number of reasons:
(1) somebody always wants to play leader because they think that they know best (probably somebody who has already got a managerial position and has authority stamped all over them) this will cause unnecessary conflict within the camp and that spells failure.
(2) A survival situation will bring the worst out in people (especially the ones that already don't respect others) so avoiding these groups of hyenas will be a must for your own survival, particularly if yu have anything of any value and want to keep hold of them i.e food supplies, weapons, tools etc.
(3) large groups will draw attention to other more aggressive gangs that will be fully prepared to use any violence necessary, what ever the motive.
(4) An organized group of say a 10-12 people who can trust each other is far better than a group of say fifty that live in fear of each other, thus not knowing who to trust?

Your right about a small group being the best for survival. The trick is to get organized, know your group members strengths and weaknesses, then act (as a group) accordingly.
