Now i have my stuff - im keen to get out and practice some skills, now i live in South west london so there is no where around here to go - i looked at richmond park but they are really strict.

anyone got any ideas where to go - even if it was just for a day of sitting practicing making fire etc...

Richmond park

Do you drive? A3 between you and Portsmouth there is plenty of countryside. Look at a map and find a good patch of woodland with minimal footpaths/bridleways etc and get off the beaten track.

Alternativly Burnham Beeches/Stoke Common ;)

don't drive, easy access to the mainline trains though.

I'm on the route that 1694 mentions Wazaaap. Mainline station 6-ish miles from me and regular buses every 20 minutes up until about 6pm, then one an hour until last one about 10pm.

Loads of footpaths, old woodland (birch, pine, hazel, oak as main species), and big hills (for around here) with good views.

We've already been practicing lighting small fires (in the river valley), beer can/meths stoves, rough cooking and chillin'. :) We only need to find an area where we can practice with shelters and won't be found by the gamekeepers. Lighting a fire on the hills is also a no-no as you can be seen for many miles, hence the stoves with meths.

3 of us should be going up there at the end of the week as a casual 'get back to nature day', we will look for a location for shelter-creation practice. None of us has full kit yet, but we make-do with what we have at present. You would be more than welcome on the next trip. :)

Regards

Richmond Park is patrolled by police and locked at night but there are plenty of Deer and magic mushrooms ;).

You might want to have a look at Oxshott Woods, accessible from a number of train stations down from Waterloo or the A3, Esher train station for isntance. Loads of places down the A3. Or Chobham common is a pretty vast expanse nearer the boardering the M3

Before you head for the woods, practice what you can do in your own backyard. If you have a basement, set up a target on a bale of straw and practice your archery, crossbow, and pellet-gun shots. You can download free targets from the internet and print them out far cheaper than you can buy them.

Set up your tent in the backyard (tell the neighbors that your kids are having a "sleep-over"). Then try out your tent and sleeping bags before you have to head for the hills. This will also let you figure out what works and what doesn't.

Make sure you have set up and broken camp at least 10 times, and time yourself and your family.

Try out your cooking skills on your bar-be-cue grill using your survival recipies. If you mess up, order a pizza and try again tomorrow.

Most of all, download and read. Educate yourself! Start at www.survivalblog.com . If you need other sites, PM me and I'll send you the URLs.

One thing I truly believe, we're all running out of time, both over in the UK and here in the USA as well.

LOL, I never realised the hotbed that Surrey was for survivalizm, it's reputation is much more middle class.

From London its not that hard to get onto the North Downs area, 40 mins on the train then a quick walk...which should be a piece of piss if you are half way prepared for a worst case scenario.

I suspect some of you would have benefited from a quick stint in the boy scouts rather than laughing it off as gay.

Most of the skills being refered to, field food prep, making a fire, cooking on said fire, selecting and pitching a camp, map and compass work, first aide, even how to take a shit in the woods (there are rules) etc. I picked up at about 13 and even over a decade on its still with me.
