Brown's Invite To Pope

Gordon Brown has personally invited Pope Benedict XVI to visit Britain.

The Chancellor met the Pope in the Vatican where the Chancellor has been launching a scheme giving vital vaccines to children in the developing world.

The meeting, which included a personal audience, is being seen as further indication of Mr Brown's status as "Prime Minister-in-waiting" before Tony Blair's expected departure this summer.

If his invitation is accepted, it would be the first papal visit to the UK since John Paul II in 1982. Tony Blair is thought to have made a similar offer when he met the Pope last summer.

At the meeting, the Pope appealed to Mr Brown and other finance ministers to face the problem of global poverty.

Brown will enter No 10 unopposed

Gordon Brown has secured the backing of enough MPs to ensure he will not face a contest to become the next Labour leader and prime minister.

Mr Brown has 308 nominations, prompting his only rival, left-winger John McDonnell, to concede. He was 16 nominations short of the 45 required.

Mr McDonnell said he was disappointed on behalf of Labour Party members and it was a "blow to democracy".

Mr Brown should now take over unopposed after Tony Blair steps down on 27 June.

Nominations officially close on Thursday, but there are not enough remaining MPs to allow Mr McDonnell to run.

'Mathematically impossible'

He said: "With Gordon Brown having gained 308 nominations from Labour MPs, it is now mathematically impossible for me to reach the nominations I require to stand. There will not now be an election."

He congratulated Mr Brown, but said it was a shame party members would be denied "an opportunity of participating in a democratic election for the leader of this party".

"I had hoped by standing I would have given them a voice in this crucial decision."

Mr Brown's campaign said they would await the formal voting figures announced by the party on Thursday before making any statement.

But his campaign manager, Commons Leader Jack Straw, said that they were "delighted" the party was "uniting" behind the chancellor.

Then there are the "direct" sales of gold by the Central banks. The most recent sales were made by the Bank of England. It sold off at least half of its gold reserves over a 3-year period ending in March.

The man responsible for the decision to sell the gold is Gordon Brown, the Chancellor of the Exchequer. He has now come under fire for having made horrendous investment decisions.

The British Independent newspaper published the story on May 26.

In part that paper says "Gordon Brown has "lost" 400 million pounds by ordering the sale of part of Britain's gold reserves by the Bank of England....."

"Figures obtained by the Independent on Sunday also show that his decision to order the Bank of England to part with some of its gold reserves and switch into Euro and yen was also not a good bet for the taxpayer. The value of gold has soared on world markets as investors have switched to gold."

First gold disappears from Russia, then from Britain and now seemingly from the U.S. Where did it all go? Well, a good part of it went to China and a little bit of it went to Japan. But fairly substantial portions have wound up in the hands of wealthy families.

Gordon Brown and the Pope are trying to save millions of children in the poorest countries by speeding distribution of life-saving vaccines.

A group of world leaders, including the Chancellor and Pope Benedict XVI, launched the £750m scheme in Rome yesterday.

The audience with the Pope could also bring domestic political benefits for Mr Brown, so soon after the conflict between the Government and the Catholic Church over whether gay couples should have in adoption law similar rights to heterosexuals. The row threatened to erode Labour's traditionally strong base among working-class Catholics, with vital local elections looming in Scotland in May.

Also at the ceremony in Rome were Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan and Paul Wolfowitz of the World Bank launching the "Advance Market Mechanism". Italy, the UK, Canada, Norway, Russia and the Gates Foundation are to create a £750m fund that will give the poorest countries purchasing power in the drugs market, spurring pharmaceutical companies to develop the needed drugs. Mr Brown told The Independent: "It will give them the power to buy at discounted prices a suitable vaccine when one becomes available. At a stroke, it turns a vague hope for a medical breakthrough into an immediate reality. It will now make economic sense for pharmaceutical companies to develop the new vaccine."

He added: "Of course, drugs and vaccines are only part of the answer of addressing the arithmetic of disease and death. Weak health systems and insufficient doctors and nurses are among the main obstacles to access to basic health care. Nothing less than a bold commitment to action is now needed."

The first disease to be targeted will be pneumococcal infection, the main cause of deaths from pneumonia among children, and the second leading cause of childhood meningitis deaths. It kills more than 1.6 million people, including nearly a million children under five, every year.

Worldwide, nearly 10 million children under five die every year, or about one every three seconds. A quarter of these deaths are caused by diseases such as measles, polio, diphtheria and hepatitis, for which there are vaccines available. There are no effective vaccines yet for malaria, pneumonia, tuberculosis and Aids, which kill seven million under-fives a year.

Brown accused of conning the country over pensions

The revelation that Gordon Brown defied official advice on the effects of his policies on pensions led yesterday to calls for an inquiry by the independent financial watchdog.

The Conservatives sought to step up the pressure on the Chancellor in the wake of the disclosure of warnings over the effects of a £5-billion-a year raid on pension funds in 1997. Officials told him that the scrapping of tax relief on dividends paid into pension funds risked driving many into insolvency, as £75 billion pension fund assets would be instantly wiped out. The warnings have been borne out as tens of thousands of pensioners have lost out.

Gordon Brown may not give the UK a referendum on the ‘Constitution for Europe’

According to the FT, regime change in the UK and the coronation of a new king is just as unlikely to give the British people a referendum on the EU Constitution. According to Geoff Hoon, the ‘Minister for Europe’, Mr Brown is under no constitutional requirement to hold a referendum on ‘detailed processes’ of the European Union.

He cites, of course, the bleak reality that no previous government has held a referendum on the ‘detailed processes’ which have all effectively been mini-treaty amendments to the Treaty of Rome. The reality is that, while France and the Netherlands have failed to ratify the Constitution, some 18 other member states have managed to do so. Mr Hoon refers to the ‘important politics’ in those member-states that have ratified the treaty and this should be recognised.

In the ‘third way’, all-things-to-all-people politics of New Labour, a way has to be found of facing both directions at once: ‘We have got to find a way forward that respects both the obvious problem of those countries that have held a referendum where it has failed, but equally acknowledges that some countries have held a referendum and succeeded. That is an important context. We tend to see it solely from the perspective of a country that has not ratified. But trying to find a solution involves countries that have as well.’

We have already seen cabinet ministers voting for cuts in the NHS, then defending their endangered A&E services within their constituencies; and secretaries of state who preach comprehensive education for all, yet send their own children to selective and private schools. How long will the British people remain blind to this?

Chancellor Gordon Brown to speak at Vatican

Chancellor Gordon Brown will give a key note speech at a seminar in the Vatican on Friday July 9th to highlight the International Finance Facility.

The International Finance Facility seeks to double global aid budgets between now and 2015 to finance the Millennium Development Goals by selling Government backed bonds on international capital markets.

If adopted by governments worldwide it would raise aid from rich to poor countries to $100 billion per year in the years to 2015.

Overseas aid scheme receives church backing
The scheme has received strong backing from the Vatican and from Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor, leader of the Catholic Church in England and Wales who will chair the morning session.

The Director of the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, Chris Bain, will make a speech aimed at galvanising other Catholic development agencies to muster grass roots support among Catholics worldwide.

The seminar will bring together politicians from developed and developing countries, including from the G8 countries, and senior representatives of the international finance institutions as well as Catholic development agencies and bishops conferences.

As with the Jubilee Debt Campaign the backing of the Catholic Church and other churches and faith communities is seen as crucial in putting pressure on governments to act.

Moral duty to act to end poverty

A spokesman for the Cardinal said: “As Catholics who are fortunate to live in rich countries we believe that it is our moral duty to work for the relief of the suffering and the eradication of poverty in our world today. Having willed the ends, in the form of the Millennium Development Goals, it is important to will the means.

Gordon Brown celebrates, what he calls, a “New World Order” (ie Global Government) numerous times referring to what “somebody” said back in 1990. That “somebody” was none other than George Herbert Walker Bush.

Many might not have noticed but Britain has a new Prime Minister. It was announced yesterday that Gordon Brown will enter number 10 uncontested.

Recently, as he senses power coming his way, Brown has been making speeches announcing the coming of a new world order and triumphing the virtues of globalization.

The British people have long had it drilled into their minds that the Prime Minister after Tony Blair will be Gordon Brown. It has been widely reported by every major media outlet for years and is well known within government that the pair had established a “working assumption” that would enable Mr Brown to take over the reins. A television drama was even made about the so called “deal” made between the two before Blair became Prime Minister.

The deal has now been done. The current chancellor of the Exchequer, Brown has been the financial brainpower behind the New Labour agenda since it was kick started by globalist connections in the early 1990s. He is and always has been personally determined to be Prime Minister of Britain though, many believe every decision he has taken as chancellor has been with his prime ministerial ambition in mind.

As a young politician Brown was a staunch Socialist within the Scottish Labour party. When John Smith became leader of the Labour Party shortly before his premature death, he appointed Brown as Shadow Chancellor. Smith was a member of the steering committee, the inner core of the Bilderberg Group. He got Gordon Brown invited to the 1991 Bilderberg meeting where he was effectively groomed along with Blair as the next big thing in British politics. Incidentally this was the same meeting at which Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton was in attendance, he became President a matter of months later.

Brown has also, as far back as 1998 been listed in the “Global Leaders group” at the World Economic forum (otherwise known as the DAVOS group) . He has often been touted for high ranking IMF positions.

Brown was a traditional Labour figure, the economic spokesman who doesn’t¹t know much about economics. He took on an advisor - Ed Balls, a Financial Times leader writer - an ideologist for globalization, in effect - who learned his economic trade at Harvard. Balls is a regular Bilderberg attendee, his name can be found on the attendance lists almost every year since 2001. Brown soon started going to New England regularly for his summer holidays and became a true believer in the the neo-liberal line from Harvard - Globalization, the Washington consensus.

Brown’s Bilderberg connections were most recently highlighted by Norman Baker, MP for Lewes, who officially requested that Gordon Brown provide details of Bilderberg meetings he has attended.

Brown’s takeover from Blair has been in effect for the last two years. He began concentrating less on his role as chancellor and more on over all policy a long time ago. Recent major speeches have seen Brown demonstrating his “personal commitment” to tough anti-terrorism laws and methods to reduce crime and make the country safer.

Brown has called for police to be allowed to hold terrorist suspects for longer than 28 days, a move that was rejected by Parliament in 2005. He has also championed the Big brother state, suggesting that biometric technology be implemented in banks and supermarkets, and that it made sense to extend the use of the technology into the public sector for use in an ID scheme.

Brown even quoted George Orwell, to equate these authoritarian ideas with the struggle for freedom: “writing in the thirties, at democracy’s darkest hour in Europe, when the threat was fascism, “the thing that I saw in your face no power can disinherit, no bomb that ever burst shatters the crystal spirit”.

Brown has continually equated 7/7 with 9/11 as historical turning points, even though on 7/7 the attack in London was on a very small scale with only 52 fatalities.

Britain's next PM pressed on military action in Iran

Britain's prime minister-in-waiting Gordon Brown refused Saturday to rule out military action against Iran over its programme of nuclear enrichment, the BBC reported.

Brown, seen as less hawkish than outgoing premier Tony Blair, said he believed that the Iranian nuclear row could be settled through "multi-lateral pressure."

Speaking in Bristol, western England, at a hustings event for the Labour party leadership, which he has already won, and deputy leadership, Brown was pressed on whether he would rule out military action.

But he would not give such an assurance, the broadcaster said.

The Press Association news agency reported Brown had called for a "peaceful settlement" to the situation and replied that multilateral action and economic sanctions were the best way forward when asked about the military option.

The United States has not ruled out taking military action against Iran over the disputed nuclear programme, while Britain has said that the use of force is not on the agenda.

Brown to push ahead with ID card scheme

Gordon Brown will stick with the identity cards scheme when he takes over at No10, it was claimed today.

He appears to be warming to the £5billion project but will focus on its advantages to business and individuals rather than its value in combating terrorism.

There are now signs that the Chancellor and the Treasury - both of whom were initially highly sceptical - have come to support a version of the cards.

He is understood to be concerned about the rising cost of identity fraud and believes biometric cards should go ahead if they can within budget.

Mr Brown has commissioned former HBOS chief Sir James Crosby to look at potential benefits to business and customers, and has delayed publication of the report until he becomes prime minister.

The review team has consulted London School of Economics experts, who were highly critical of the original proposal on cost and workability grounds.

Chancellor Gordon Brown is seeking to regain the initiative on the environment with a call for a "new world order" to combat climate change.

Ahead of the launch of the Government's Climate Change Bill on Tuesday, the Chancellor will herald the Government's role in new European emissions standards and call for the UN to prioritise the fight against global warming.

And he will dismiss Tory leader David Cameron's capacity to lead the continent on the environment because of his, and his party's Euroscepticism.

A Tory Government would have "no credibility, no influence and no achievements" within the EU, he will say. "Let us also be clear: only a government fully committed to the UK's role in Europe can show such leadership. Euro-scepticism and continent-wide environmental action are at odds with each other.

"A government ambivalent about the UK's future in Europe and allied to the most reactionary forces in the European Parliament would have no credibility, no influence and no achievements."

After a weekend in which the Tories launched a bold package of proposals to tax frequent fliers, Mr Brown will criticise "ill-conceived" and "unworkable" measures.

"Changes must be considered, costed, credible and consumer friendly not ill-conceived, short-termist, unworkable and unfair."
