I have been given some good advice on boots in this thread http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showt...=36063&page=14
now, this means that already equipping myself for survival outdoors in the UK is much cheaper than I'd first thought. So, my next question would be; should I spend money buying the expensive Gore-Tex type camo' over trousers and jackets you find in outdoors/hunting/fishing shops, or should I go with military surplus?
I plan to get military surplus UK army sleeping bags on advice from someone who has them and uses them and they are very cheap.
I plan to get bergens to carry everything on advice from this forum.
Tents? What should I be looking at for my family of 5?
What about the children? What should they be equipped with?
should I just stick with what I can get here
http://www.surplusandadventure.com/shop/home/airborne-vintage-cargo-trousers-402504.html and forget the hunting/fishing shops?

If you're very small or on the large size, you can get some bargains from tackle shops. I've got some stealth/realtree gear for really good prices cos they're end of line stock. I'm into Jack Pyke stuff at the moment and getting meself geraed up with that.

Bargains here:

I have a pair of goretex DPM overtrouser that I was going to get rid of as it happens. I've worn them once. Shove me a tenner in the post and they're yours.

Dont know how old your kids are but we've beem using this company for years for the little ones.

Creers shrubber ... I was looking at a pair of Jack Pyke boots at the weekend, but they didnt have my size (I have some vouchers to spend, so I'm not going to shop around for them, I'll just wait)
I am a 34" waist 32" leg ... if they will fit me, then they're sold.

Aye, I must admit, I'm a lazy fooka when it comes to shops, so this site looks like a boon to me.

Hello None,

I've also got 3 kids, all under 6 years old, so I can't see our family of five trekking through the wilderness with me pushing the double pram, darting into the forest now and again to slaughter a wild boar... :(

I'll be stocking up to survive any regular type economic crises. I think the most likely short-term scenario is a breakdown in global food supplies that would lead to shops and warehouses being emptied out and energy supplies being cut off...

Good luck to you and your family! :)

For me too, with 3 boys (9,5 & 1) things could be difficult.
For now I am concentrating on getting the equipment that I'll need to go out and hunt and forage for our food. Living in a council house, we are fooked if they decide that we can't have electricity and or gas ... I have a chimnea I suppose for some heat .... but my main goal after getting the basic 'survival' equipment, is to get a house with a real fire (not easy when all the private renters up here are catering for the holiday market and/or have priced locals out of the market because of all the retired peeps from the cities down south who've sold their 3/2 bed semi's and bought all the good (and much cheaper) houses up here to live in and/or rent to holidaymakers) out of town and do my best to drop out of the capatilist scam as much as possible before it's too late.

I just posted on another link about the importance of fresh water, preferably from a spring or close to it, because then the water is "alive" and full of minerals. Remember to set this as a priority for you and your family (starting now)...

I believe strongly in the spiritual aspect to all this and I think that there will be a reward for the love you show for your family; and the fact that we do it without expecting the reward will make the reward even better, if you get my drift.... Selfless love in the right spirit is a beautiful thing :)
