Internet Addiction Reaches Epidemic Proportions Says 118118 Research

Research carried out by Yougov on behalf of 118118 showed that Brits have become seriously addicted to the Internet and some consider it as their top hobby, rivalling even faiths and religions.

The poll, which probed a sample of 2100 people, found that 44 percent felt stressed and confused when they did not have their dose of internet goodness or when their connection was broken - dubbed discomgoogolation.

More than half of those questioned said that a "broken" internet connection would be worse than if their households were devoid of gas, water and electricity supply.

A similar proportion said that it was more than religion while slightly more than a quarter used it for more than four hours a day (ed : obviously, they did not poll us).

Psychologist Dr David Lewis, who monitored the research, said: "The proliferation of broadband has meant for the first time in history we have entered a culture of 'instant answers' - a galaxy of information is just a mouse click away and we have become addicted to the web."

The impact of internet on people's everyday life couldn't be exemplified better than by this last survey tidbit, one out of every six surveyed said they would miss the internet more than their friends (ed: you can't access Facebook without the internet).

Hi moonshine & welcome to the forum:)

Hehe I don't even want to add up the hours I spend on the net most days, it would scare me, lol:o

I have experienced the dreaded loss of internet connection through service provider probs & also a dead pc, so can totally relate to what that feels like & it's not good:( However, on a more positive note, I still really enjoy life away from the pc, getting out & about with friends & spending time in nature as much as I can - it certainly does you good to have a break now & then:D
