I'v been fiddling with the tarot for a while now - mostly as a mediatation tool to look at my life and its direction.
the deck i'v got is a second hand AG Muller +Cie - its not that great as the cards are very diffrent from most decks, and the symbolism isnt that strong....

I was just wondering if anyone has any recomendations to a new deck?

thanks in advance,
mike.

Hi there

There was a thread on this a while back when I was checking out some decks..

http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25443

I now own 3 decks..

The Universal Waite deck (Rider-Waite with better colouring and detail)

The Thoth deck

and the Golden Dawn Deck

I think the Rider-Waite deck is great as it makes it easy to learn the meaning of the cards, although there was still lots hidden in that deck, for example the Court Royal cards have 3 male figure's and 1 female, when the "page" should be (and often looks like) a female... and you can still read it as a female card...

Crowley reviled allot in the Thoth deck although it is very advanced and has allot of depth to the cards... he changed the page to the princess and the king to prince with the knight being the most mature male card. the Golden Dawn deck that came out later also is a bit more reviling...

Though I would say the Rider-Waite deck is a great starter deck and it is still used allot... I'm still learning the decks and find that deck to be good for that although the Thoth deck blows me away just from the art work its self...

The Golden Dawn deck is a bit dull, But its like of half way in-between the two decks..

I think they are what you make them...why does the symbolism have to be that strong? It's about your intent thats behind them is it not? As far as i can discern from tarot cards they are an extension or variation of many other forms of 'reading tools' such as the Runes, or throwing the 'Bones' or a crystal ball, they all work using the energy you exude, so it matters little whats on the cards as long as you can interpret them.....imo!! :)

I downloaded about 30-50 full packs recently from Bit Comet [Tarot Packs] my favourites are B.O.T.A. Thoth and Waite, but some of the packs I downloaded were fantastic, each showing a different aspect.
I agree they are a tool, and almost uneccessarry if you are used to using divination tools, but if using them for meditation etc, it helps to have a pack that is not too obscure. I speak of past knowledge as I can no longer 'read' them, or just well out of practise.

it doesn't really matter, what you do is, if you don't like first layout, you just do/refresh again and again- until you get what you like- then it works :o

Those three decks sound like a neat system.

All based around the tree of life, so it's easier to get to know the others when you've got to know one of them, and meanings in the Thoth deck just get deeper and deeper.

I find that the Thoth deck is also very good for journeying into the cards. It has a richness that makes good doorways into the otherworld.

The Thoth deck is probably the most admired deck in the Western tradition (for good reason) but some people find it's a bit of a handful or a bit overwhelming at first.

have you looked at online divination sites like this one?

http://www.facade.com/tarot/

the mainstream decks on that site are rider waite and the aquatic tarot which is a repainted rider waite deck. they are kind of like an old foundation which a lot of more recent decks are variations of.

The Haindl tarot is a very intresting and original deck, and that's on there as well. It's a bit lame as a divination deck because it's all nicey nicey (and life isn't) but it's wonderful as a deck to meditate on.

I have been reading for about 15 years now, and I still use the "Rider Waite" deck, which is probably the most commonly used. I myself wouldn't recommend using a second-hand deck, as the vibrations of the original owner would still be very much present and could confuse. I know this sounds weird but sleeping with the cards under your pillow is a great way of getting your vibrations imprinted on a deck, but I would recommend getting and seasoning your own deck. I hope this helps!

Yes, burn them. :p And you shouldn't use someone else's cards.
