Been thinking that maybe it would be an idea to arrange some sort of survival weekends. For like mined people to come together and share techniques and ideas etc. These are not meant to be social events, but obviously fun is a key element of survival. So having a good time is key to physical and mental well being. Just an idea of mine. Maybe people are feeling like me apprehensive of attending social events on the board as we don't like to have our every move plotted and scrutinised by internet stalkers etc. Must be a way to organise things so we can maintain our anonamility.
They could be held at different times of the year and in different environments. Such as inland, wetlands or coastal etc. I don't know how to get this to the next stage. I have looked at the Ray Mears website but he is always fully booked months in advance and anyway he's way to expensive for my pocket. So survival on a budget is born.

You need to get permission before you can light fires and start chopping wood. These people do good courses I get alot of my stuff from their shop. http://www.survivalschool.co.uk/Home.htm

There I was hoping to be able to just turn up to a location and spend a couple of days away from everything. A permit to light a fire. I just want the system to leave me alone for a short while and even that has to have a permit. lol If I didn't laugh I would cry.

Hullo Ian2day :) Cheer up!
Where do you live....no, don't answer that. Here is summit that may help ya. But you are gonna have to use your noggin. Kick me later if you think that I am being obvious.
First. Every bit of land that you see belongs to someone or organisation. Every bit of dirt on the verge and all those trees that are popping out all over the shop are acountable. We know that, but what does it mean to you and me?
A little true story. I am a private person, but I like to share that which might help another. Some details have been altered in this tale.
I want to move. I want to sell-up and move to 'greener' ways. Forget the survival stuff, I just want to be more at one with the things that mean something to me.
I live in a place that is a quick hour to work that takes me to the 'big smelly' (City) but is two blocks from the woodland walks that I love so much.
Well, with all that wood laying around I thought that I might pick some up and burn it in the chiminea at home in the garden for no other reason than to have a bit of time around the fire at night.
I liked it a lot. But then I thought that if it was me that owned that woods, I would be p!ssed off.
So I did what I do best. I found out who owned the woods and went to asked them for the timber that had fallen. I would not mess with the habitats of the woodland creatures and rightly convinced them that by mee taking some of the timber away, I would be clearing the area for other wildlife. Simple
To cut a long-winded story short. I found that it was owned by the council. I contacted them and asked for, what I called, scavengers rights. This was simply a title that would leagaly allow me to pick up dead wood, fallen branches, sticks and the like that could be no more than 4inches in gerth. 10ft a day. I got the figures out of my head. They said yes  I am alowed to carry a small bowsaw and saw and hand axe with me, quite within my 'accountable' rights. Though most times it is just a pen knife and colapsable saw.
When the council move in and cut down a load of trees every year, I follow on with my hand tools and take all the bigger bits that they dont want. Ten foot is more than enough for a days use in a stove, so I have a stash thats drying and becoming more pleasant to burn. (dry is better). Most folk use the place to walk their dogs and ride through with motor-X bikes. I am not noticed and am the only one doing it leagly.
When I move house, I intend to have a years supply of dried wood. I will buy the cheaper 'green' wood in bulk (years supply) and dry it myself. I will be set-up by making a few phone calls.
How this relates to your original post Ian2day, is that if you find a wood that you like to amble through, you can do one of two things. You could just case the joint, move in for your few days, and shift your booty if told to leave. In the mean time, trying your best at keeping to yourself, lighting fires and making a temp camp. Or you could find out if it was owned by someone that could be aproached, they might say yes.
By the way, you would feel safer with a pooch as they make great watchdogs and will get used to the solitude and growl at any hume aproaching.
This message was just to inspire rather than educate.
Tom.

Thanks for the concern but I can manage to put the end of the world to the back of my mind sometimes. lol
Would be perhaps looking to do this within the next month or so. Maybe just after the school holidays have finished. Not sure if anyone else is interested apart from who I have already been contacted by.

Try asking some farmers if you can go on their land and say you will offer them a small fee. Im sure some would be happy as long as your not disruptive.
