You can track a mobile phone while it's on, if you have the technology. But what do you reckon to the idea that it can be tracked when it's 'off'?

As some people here wondered, either its true or it was stuck in the news for a reason: to stymie criminals from contacting each other for example?

Your phone is always still 'on' when its 'off' most models will go dead when you remove the battery though this is becoming less common on new phones as the transponder can be built in and uses a very small power source recharged through kinetic energy (your movements).

Did you know that codes can be sent to your phone to turn them on without you knowing so that your conversations can be heard?
Personally I always leave mine in the house unless I need to take it with me for some reason.

Have heard this but didn't know if it was true or not.
Fuck it, I'm leaving mine in my bag, with the battery out from now on! :D

It is true. The phone companies can do it. The just send activation codes to your phone.

Where was this reported. Just want to find out more, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be listened to! God what a boring job that'd be!! ;)
"Hey guess what, I saw so and so symbol in issue 6 of Grant Morrison's Invisible's, what do you think he meant by that?"

Its not just about that, its more about having a network of mics all over the shop! Say for example 'they' want to listen in on a conversation in a bar between 2 blokes and can't get a lock.. and then you walk in and sit down at the next table.. it's everywhere in every form and more so in the home ;)

Dont recall where I read it. Thought this was common knowledge
I doubt they would do it to people unless they were of special interest. Can you imagine how many boring conversation people would listen to!!

I think this film is a good example of how many people it would take to monitor a signle person and track them. This is one reason why I doubt it would happen unless there was some pressing need.

LOL! I thought you'd be able to offer more than 'common knowledge' marpat! Look where the 'common knowledge' that Crowley was a satanist has led! ;)
I'll do a little search.........

Have also heard things about triangulating the unique energy signature of a battery, whether it's in/out the on/off phone. Would have to look into that though :)

Thank you for the answers. I haven't seen any real evidence they can be tracked when off, though. Does anyone have any?
Otherwise I'm inclined to more wonder why an evidence-less 'worry' was put on the news.

I am convinced that we can be monitored vis our sky digi box. As a result of my dogs chewing through the telephone cable that I am meant to plug into the back of it, I have never replaced it. For those who don't know, when the telephone cable is connected the set allows us to use more of the interactive pages and take part in on-line activities.
Sky rental sent me a letter informing me that if I did not link up my phone line then I would be charged. As I am a customer paying for their services in the first place I ignored their letter. As a consequence I never heared anything else.
Up until they wrote to me, I have suspected that the technology is more than what it says on the box. Their attempts to make it more effective by trying to bully me into connecting my phone line more than convinces me that it is suspect IMO.

i know of this model that witha strong shake of the hand while holding the phone it starts playing the music, or u can answer the call... SonyEricsson, forget asking me the model... so, now it makes even more sense. it is apparently cool because it is a sort of new feature, BUT... NOTHING COMES FREE on this stupid planet! now is understandable WHY... while u play around with STRONG MOVEMENETS for playing on the mobile your songs, you are also recharging it...MMM...LOL
we are none of us free, controlled to the limit!
