I guess they will never take anything serious. Who was the ravinig Elvis they said was running. I can only think when they mentioned raving monster looney they are talking about Icke.

The polls have closed in Haltemprice and Howden - and while David Davis will no doubt be celebrating a victory in his self-inflicted by-election, he may also be asking himself what on earth it was all for.

Labour refused to put up a candidate, with Gordon Brown describing the by-election as a "farce", and the Liberal Democrats - who back Mr Davis' stance on 42 days' pre-charge detention for terrorist suspects - also declined to participate.

[COLOR="red"]So David Davis was left with 25 other candidates, most of whom it was fair to say could be described a 'loonies'.[/red]
He could have been Home Secretary were the Conservatives to win the next election - but not now.

David Cameron is unlikely to welcome him back to his front bench and Mr Davis himself accepts such a scenario, saying he will "prowl the backbenches".

This bizarre, even surreal by-election has cost around £80,000.

David Davis has been praised for his courage, but the constituency - even with boundary changes - has been Conservative since 1837, and he has not yet shifted the national debate, despite a lot of coverage in the local media.

The former shadow home secretary will continue to oppose 42-day detention, ID cards, the National DNA Database and the increasing use of CCTV cameras.

But in the weeks and months ahead he may question his decision to resign.

Especially if the Conservatives win power and form an administration in which he could have been Home Secretary - and changed the laws he passionately opposes.
