The Alethiometer is the fictional divination tool invented by the author Philip Pullman for his His Dark Materials trilogy. It works rather like the Tarot, rune stones or many other real forms of divination. You may have read the books: Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, or seen the movie The Golden Compass and seen it in action. The Alethiometer is mastered by Lyra, the main character. You form the question by placing the three controlable pointers on the icons you think most fits it, then the moving pointer picks out the icons that make up the answer. As with the Tarot etc, the language is symbolic not literal and open to intepretation. According to Pullman it takes a lot of practice to use it effectively.

Can i ask Hagbard_celine, i have seen the 'Golden compass', but i never watched it with a critical eye at the time, never can unless by myself, well what was the main usage of that film, i mean with the 'compass' etc??
I never trusted it from get go, never let my young family members watch it...so i guess i was right too...?

The Golden Compass is one of the best films I've ever seen! It's so symbolic in the way they try to separate children from their souls, turning them into zombies. I think Dust signifies the power of spirituality, and that's why the Magesterium are so desperate to stop it developing in the next generation. Did you not pick up on that when you saw it? GEt someone to look after the kids and see it again!

Hope you're feeling better now, Rick.:)

This time with my mind in gear!
