I started with the rider Waite deck in the early 80's .for beginners it is a good deck , does exactly what it says on the tin. The images are pretty self explanatory and you can read them without needing to refer to a book .Using your own intuition is always preferable ,as each card changes meaning in relation to the cards around it .It builds up in layers really . But rider Waite to start off with .If you are into astrology and symbolism more the Crowley Thoth deck is a very good one for those reasons .For example the 9 of coins is representative of Venus in Virgo as well as the card meaning .So therefore the astrological influences of those planets /signs come to bear on the reading .Also many people over the years want a specific time for the happenings indicated, this isn't always easy to give as "future" probability isn't set and is fluid .But referring to Venus in Virgo astrologically via an ephemeris can lock the meaning into that time frame , wether past or future , as we perceive it anyway .Each reader will interpret differently .I would read some books on the subject but dont try and retain the info to much as the subconscious stores it anyhow and it will surface when you need it . I read one book meaning for the tower and only ever used that particular meaning once several years later and it was spot on .Meditate each day on a new card and sleep with it under your pillow to get a feel for it .Learn the basics of the suits such as Coins = earth element ,finances stability . Swords =air ,intellect active mind deep thinking . Wands = fire dynamic person active .Cups =water ,sensitivity creative artistic nurturing . Also some of the major arcana represent sun signs Aries is the emperor Taurus the heirophant .This is useful to pinpoint certain times for situations or people of that sign .remember also that we have moon rising signs etc so that can take a bit of intuition to suss .Also some people can be emotional i.e cups without being a water sign birth sign .Hope that helps if you want any more info pm me .

Well as someone who has used the tarot for years I would personally recommend the Thoth deck. If you want a deeper understanding of the cards then Aleister Crowley's "Book of Thoth" is essential but it is not very useful for practical use of the cards. For that, I STRONGLY recommend "Keywords for the Crowley Tarot" by Hajo Banzhaf and Brigitte Theler. It is the best companion book for the Thoth deck by a long shot and aside from "the Book of Thoth" itself is the only one you'll ever need.
Avoid the book "Tarot: Mirror of the Soul" like the plague. It contains no information of worth and worse, is flat out wrong in many places. For example the author states that the Emperors crossed legs (on the Emperor card naturally), represent the number 4 and therefore strength and fortification when Crowley himself is abundantly clear that it represents the alchemical symbol for Sulphur. So yes, avoid that book.
I have made two videos going through the Major and Minor Arcana of the Thoth deck which you might like to watch so you can see what the artwork on the cards is like. With the Major Arcana I also included Crowley's own keywords:
Major Arcana: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsL5hiXz-sI
Minor Arcana: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATCJaZe8HgU
If you go to my homepage on youtube I have set up a playlist for my tarot videos some of which you might find useful.

Doesn't Tsarion have his own tarot deck TW?
I dont think so?
On his website he uses the Rider-Waite and Thoth cards to explain the meaning, He might do though..
I am interested as I have been looking at come pics of them and for some reason i seem to be getting them more... Tsarion once said, "its very easy, just look at the cards and what they mean" ... and if you get a good deck I think it helps...

Ok well going by what you guys and others have said ..its seems the Thoth Deck is very good but more for people who can go deeper into the cards... and the Rider-Waite is better to get used to them.... I might get the Thoth a little later...
I heard that the GD ones are cool to start out but there does not seem to be many about....
So I have just ordered these
Universal Waite Tarot Cards: Amazon.co.uk: Pamela Colman Smith, Pamela Colman Smith; Mary Hanson-Roberts: 9780880794961: Books@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51sZ5VALp4L.@@AMEPARAM@@51sZ5VALp4L
which is basically the Rider-Waite deck that has been touched up, they looked great so thought I would make em mine....
Will let you know how I get on, might be able to do on line readings! :)
cheers for the links quickening666, and will check out that book!

i would say the raider-waite deck is more fortune telling based. the Thoth deck is WELL better and is more intellectually sound, the book of thoth (book) is absolutly jam packed with the meanings and understandings of the symbolism used in the cards - the tetragrammaton symbolism of the Court cards (knight, queen, prince and princess) is a great essay as is the essays on the fool card (the celtic Green Man of spring, parcival, sebek the crocodile, the fisher man (each essay is for a different level of initiate))
crowley also explains how the rider-waite deck has cards placed wrongly on purpose because of the promises they held to keep the secrets of the proper positions of the cards.
Get the Thoth Tarot because its alot better

I have a Rider-Waite and a Thoth deck and I definitely prefer the Thoth deck. I've also read the Book of Thoth which I found to be quite good.
I love the symbolism and general look on the Thoth deck cards, they're absolutely magnificent.
When I was researching which deck to get I ran across a few others that are also quite beautiful. Unfortunately, some of those are out of print now and likewise quite expensive. Though I believe they're worth whatever price it is worth to you, I couldn't get this one specific deck I wanted. Nevertheless, the Thoth deck is definitely great.
Some very good points re cards .As has been said it depends what you want them for as a fortune telling aid they work well and you can use ordinary playing cards Which stem from tarot for this purpose .But if you want to go a lot deeper and work on your self the crowley deck does give far greater insights and results .Im on my third crowley deck as ive given away a few different sets but always got another set given back to me .My original thoth decks where massive cards and most people couldnt get their hands around them to shuffle .I asked for a smaller version and a friend turned up with a pack given to him by a friend of his who knew it was my birthday and i needed them !! I use the monly occasionaly now .
Just to forewarn... I am very biased; the only deck I have and will ever use is Crowley's.
My mother was first introduced to Crowley’s deck when she was an active Rosicrucian back in the in the 60-70's. I started working with the deck when I was very little (8-10) and accompany my mother during readings. Crowley’s deck is so very layered with such a mired of ways to read and interpret. I just stared getting back into working with the deck again, cracking open all my books and still... even after all these years I continued to uncover so much knowledge behind this deck.
People have such a misconception of who Aleister Crowley was and unfortunately fear what they don’t understand :(; if you don't get hung up on the negative image many uninformed people tried and continue to try to cast on this man who was a prophet and genius, you can appreciate the vast knowledge he, as well as, Lady Frieda Harris has imbued within the depths of this deck.
Just my own biased opinion- ;)

Geez, that's a very open-ended question!
Are you speaking of the astrological connection representing by the card that is Leo (did your home work I see;))- the sun sign which is your overall character/ego, or do you have a specific questions pertaining to the meaning and interpretation of this card in how you feel it speaks to you?

Once we realize that duality is a man made concept given birth to from out of a limited perspective (mass consciousness), we can the truly see the "whole" as it IS!

mmm *being careful not to attract you know who are start another Crowley debate...*
the way I see it... what ever person he was, and what ever skeletons he had in his closet... its clear he wanted to make a mark on the occult and certainly did that and was an intelligent man... I tend to believe that the vast majority of what was written about him was distorted or false... But I guess if there was a way of finding out for sure it would have been found out by now, so its up to ones own perception on him.
I will probably get the Thoth deck as well... but will get warmed up with these cards.... in the end I just looked at the cards and went with what ones triggered me more and the ones I have ordered did do that....
the Thoth art work is so great.. Im tempted to use it for some of my music art work...

Yes, Lady Frieda Harris, being guided by Crowley, produced many magnificent pieces of art. As a child my mother had the huge original cards (not like the small ones in circulation today) and I use to sit a stare at them for hours on end. I'm going to be incorporating some symbols within tat.
Danny Carey from Tool is a collector of Crowley's stuff etc. Have you seen his drum kit?
"MD: On your bio page on the band's Web site [www.toolband.com] it
states that you set up your drums "in proportion to the circle and
square of the New Jerusalem," and it mentions The Book Of Thoth.
Danny: That's one of the cards from Crowley's Tarot deck. It has an
incredible wealth of information. There's so much packed into each
one of those cards."

I don't do tarot readings but I would probably recommend the Golden Dawn version as well as the Thoth just because the GD is within tradition which goes back to Eliphias Levi when he placed the Tarot on the tree of life. Of course Crowley says he's the recincarnation of Levi but the GD is still consistant of that.
Crowleys differs from the GD because he was bringing in the new aeon and so has the Aeon card instead of the Angel card (I think)...Though his changes might differ situations, it doesn't mean that something is correct and the other is wrong.

Yeah definately. Although there are some ridiculous tarot decks out there now which are based on absolutely nothing except a "cool" theme (the gangster tarot and things like that), I would never say that only one is "correct". Different readers find they can use certain decks better than others. Just a matter of experience.
I bought my first Crowley deck when I was sixteen and in hindsight, it was probably the last one I would choose to start with because I was overwhelmed with the symbology for a long time. Nowadays however, I won't use any other.
Crowley changed several of the Major Arcana. He changed "Strength" to "Lust", "Judgement" to "The Aeon", "Temperance" to "Art" (a BEAUTIFUL card), "The World" to "The Universe" and "Justice" to "Adjustment". In his Book of Thoth he gives his reasons for this and I find them to be sound reasons. For example in the case of changing "Justice to "Adjustment" he explains, "nature is not just according to any moral or ethical ideal, but nature is exact". Im reciting from memory but those are his words almost exactly.
Anyway here is the card of "Art" which I just absolutely LOVE:

I've heard Tool is in the OTO (Ordo Templi Orientis.) Not sure how much truth is in that as I've also known that Danny Carey is into the occult quite deeply, so it might just be him and/or Maynard.
I was into Tool quite hard for a while, not so much anymore. Though I am into a band called Tiamat now from Sweden, which seems to have some connection to the OTO as well, oddly enough. Or at least they licensed some material from the OTO for the album before their most recent, "lyrics" by Aleister Crowley to be specific. "Somewhat" similar to Tool. Although I like them better at this juncture in my life.

i havent got i specific question, i think.
ive always had a kind of mental block about the card.
the card was crowleys favourite and he always speaks of babalon the whore, the scarlet woman and nuit. so i guess the scarlet woman is nuit?
he also refares to the book of law, ive tried to read it but i cant get my head around it.

I don't pigeon hole them, personally. I don't know any OTO members, though I did know one guy that was going to join them a while back. He seemed nice enough to me, quite intelligent and all that. I've known a few masons and the ones I did know were quite nice.
And yes, it's true that any group can become corrupted. Just look at the so-called "Truth Movement."

Hmm just posted a blog on my space on Tiamat the Babylonian story of the Dragon Goddess of Creation.
What do you think about Maynard’s newer project- Puscifer, I love it! Do you like The Mars Volta, they are brilliant musicians, as well as, their lyrics/poetry which are right up my alley!
I actually haven't listened to them (Puscifer) yet, though checking them out on myspace atm. Odd, that the lead singer from Tiamat has a side project too named something similar, doesn't he? Lucy Fire? Maybe I'm mistaken. Ever since I've come across Tiamat a few years ago now I always thought they were similar to Tool.
I've grown more into Tiamat though, and grown farther from Tool. I prefer Tool's older albums as opposed to their last one.
I've seen A Perfect Circle live three times though, not too bad. Seen Tool live once.
Never heard of Mars Volta. I listen to stuff like Chiasm, Lacuna Coil, Satyricon, and Tiamat as far as recent "discoveries". Then I also listen to Alice in Chains, Pantera, and the like. I also like Goa and Psy Trance and other various electronica.
Quite the weird combo I suppose of dark metal (or whatever genre people call it these days) and then electronica on the other side, but whatever.
Another favorite of my cards from the Thoth deck is this:
http://www.rahoorkhuit.net/library/images/thoth/fire/wands_05.jpg
I've always liked the word Strife, for quite some time now...and the card does not disappoint.
But I don't want to go too off topic so I'll say that my favorite card from the Thoth deck thus far is:
http://www.digitarot.com/images/fullsize/knight_of_cups.jpg
I like that card image being cancerain but it would also make a good shoulder piece or calf tattoo though why anyone would want to tattoo a baby cow i dont know

It sure would my dear!
Funny, I am incorporating some of the symbols (from the Lust card)within my back piece… The Waratah-Blossom. I also thought the Universe or Star card would make a great calf/shoulder piece, for me anyhow.
Hey, what’s wrong with cows- don't let them here you blaspheme their name in India! :p

The Bedlam in Goliath-
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n248/naga8/TheMarsVolta.jpg
Posted today on the website of prog-fusion poster boys The Mars Volta, a biography on forthcoming full-length The Bedlam in Goliath tells an odd tale of murder, a haunted Ouija board, and band leader/composer Omar Rodriguez-Lopez nearly scrapping the album.
The bizarre backstory was penned by author Jeremy Robert Johnson (Siren Promised, Extinction Journals, Angel Dust Apocalypse), and it’s possible that the story is pure science fiction. If true, it’s simply disturbing.
As Johnson’s story goes, Rodriguez-Lopez bought a Ouija board, dubbed “The Soothsayer,” for singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala while in Jerusalem. Through it, the group connected to metaphysical voices, which became a collective force called Goliath and told of a love/lust/murder triangle between a man, a woman, and the woman’s mother.
Goliath’s hunger for contact supposedly led to equipment malfunctions on tour, drummer upheaval, an injury to Bixler-Zavala’s foot, a mental breakdown of the album’s main engineer, a flooded studio, and loads of bad mojo. Threats began to emanate from the board, so the band buried it.
The bad vibes started to dissipate, but continued turmoil — odd power outages and disappearing drum tracks — almost made Rodriguez-Lopez, a tireless creative force, give up.
Johnson’s biography of The Mars Volta can currently be read at their website, themarsvolta.com, where it’s posted as a downloadable document. The Bedlam in Goliath is set for release on January 29 through Gold Standard Laboratories (GSL) / Universal.
Sadly, GSL announced last week that it could no longer afford to release new music. Its back catalog will remain available online and in stores.

I heard one theory... that is, his father/mother used to call him Maynard as a term of endearment as a little boy and it stuck... who knows? They like to be allusive. They want people to focus on the music not the titles and names as much!
I posted that because of the "knowing is 1/33rd of the battle" reference. It looked so Scottish :D But that is also an interesting detail of his private life. I actually don't bother with peoples steps toward music. The actual influences count more. There is one more song that comes to my mind. Its from the Portuguese band Moonspell.

Not that much from the occult but still a damn good song :)

If you have nothing against guttural vocals you can listen to Samael. They play some sort of electronic/dark metal which some call space metal :) They have interesting occult references.

I think there is a LoTR tarot deck. Isnt there?
I thought abouth buying it. If I am to do a tarot, then I might as well have some fun memorable pictures on those cards while doing it :D

Go with whatever speaks to you my dear; ultimately the power resides in you. Remember it does take time to get "familiar" and learn to "feel" the deck you intend on working with. For me the Thoth "triggers" memories and propels me into the ethereal, because Crowley cards are so deeply influential within my family and background it's become my part of me, my extra set of eyes.
Good luck;)

I have thought about using cards as weapons... could be quite fun. Maybe that Thoth deck would do. Does the Thoth deck have something to do with the emerald tablets maybe?

And yes, it's true that any group can become corrupted. Just look at the so-called "Truth Movement."
spot on...
they manage to creep in everywhere and know how to infect things....

The book called "The Crowley Tarot" by Akron-Hajo Banzhaf cannot be beaten, IMO. It is by far the best tarot book I have owned and I have had several.
Cards: I have three decks that I have kept:
Thoth Tarot
Ceremonial magick, Lon Milo Duquette
Barbara Walker

The one I have is crap and kind of stops me useing them... I wana get a nice deck with a proper book to help me go into it more.... if anyone is clued up on this can you advice which one would be better for me?
1, Rider-Waite
2, Thoth
3, Golden Dawn
?
I have two Thoth decks, a large one for visualisation and a small one for divination. The Rider waite deck is crap and supposed to be riddled with errors. Crowley made some major changes to the card attributes which he explains clears up some of the problems with the symbols.

yeah like having 3 male court cards and 1 female... when its meant to be 2 each...
the page is really the princess...
its just as good deck for learning the cards as the visuals are so descriptive...
I also have the large ones... really nice.

I've been reading Tarot since I was 16 ( 22 years now ) and I've been through several different sets.
I started with the Hanson Roberts deck and I still have these , they are nice but have a bit of a negative vibe about them for me so I don't use them that much.
I moved on to the Thoth tarot , but I had incredible bad luck while using these so I gave them away - and they continued to bring their new owner bad luck ! Unlike most people here probably I don't think the Crowley set is a good set - the lack of ' scenes ' for the Minor Arcana really bugged me
I moved onto the Norse Tarot since I studied Old Icelandic at university , but they didn't really fit with me - I don't have any Viking blood in me , I'm mostly Celtic. I threw them away , but I bought a new set just for collection purposes.
So I mostly use the Arthurian Tarot which I've been using since January 1995 - these ones suit me quite nicely. I also use Russell Grant's Astrological Tarot which is kind of like a fun set , but it works very well for ' 12 House ' readings as it has astrological signs , Chinese signs and planets in it.
If you are choosing a Tarot set , definitely choose one you feel attracted to and one with pictures and a style of art that you like. My friend who got me into Tarot had a lot of success with the Cat People Tarot. I couldn't get on with the Thoth deck but Yvonne Chorlton-Foley ( who read for me ) used Thoth all the time. Sadie Bates used Rider-Waite if I remember rightly. Personally , I get on well with the Arthurian Tarot but I knew a girl called Kathy who found they brought her bad luck and she threw them away.
You have to find a set of Tarot that resonates with you , so to speak !
