Just seen this & it sounds really cool.... I'm also pleased to see that this has made it into the MSM & hope it gives people food for thought to start checking out eco-friendly accommodation.

A £24m funding package was put together earlier this year to help first-time buyers in Scotland get a foot on the property ladder.
But just how much would they have to spend to build their own home?

The answer could be as little as £4,000.

That is the estimated price tag attached to a property which has been built in southern Scotland over the past four years.

The walls are made of straw, the roof out of turf and much of the rest of the building from items other people threw away.

The end product is a warm and watertight cottage which gets its water supplies by gathering rainfall and its electricity from a car battery.

Plans are also in place for a water wheel to provide power for the property later this year.

While I doubt you could get anything like this for £4000 its an interesting article nontheless

Vernacular building materials make for a far better living experience than new homes with their tinny sounding rooms and tedious flat emulsioned surfaces.

Bimey, I'd forgotten about this thread rodin!

No I agree, I reckon you'd be hard pushed to do it for the £4k figure, especially here in the UK, but I still found it all pretty interesting & worth looking into:)

The problem for England isn't the cost of building. Thats a drop in the ocean compared to the land cost:eek:

not to mention getting planning, some land is very cheap but you cant build on it, very much controlled.

Many people from alternative community's have bought land and built only to have their homes demolished.
