Sci fi film recommendations

Anyone got any sci fi film recommendations? No dramas of soap operas please, like in most modern sci fi flics.

Have you seen Dark Star? First flick by George Lucas and John Carpenter (I think).

The Machinist is a great film but not quite sci fi. It does have sci fi 'feel' in terms of images and themes. It's the last good film I've seen.

All the others I could recommend you've probably seen, like Dark City. I wold like some good sci fi flicks as well. Try searchin' the imdb data base.

edit - there is a cool Japanese flick with ufo's and zombie types. The heros are Ramones lookalikes, the leader carries a guitar. It is really funny, action packed and fast paced, can't remember the name of it though, it's been on sbs a couple of times.

That Peter Jackson flick with 'Derek' - PJ's first or second film I think. Quote - "Dereks don't run" Classic.

Cheers guys, I've just rented "cube" and a few others. I've seen cube 2 and it's interesting, I wonder if it's based on anything that the government's experimented with? I've seen most of the others that you mentioned i am all i am, except a few which I'll check out.

Is "Derek" the title of that PJ film? I couldn't find it on imdb. What's "Dark Star" and "Derek" about?

Just so other's don't think this is an irrelevant post, there are a large amount of "relevant" themes in most sci fi flicks, concerning topics that we talk about.

I'm especially looking for films with space travel in it, or films like "Logan's Run"; those 70's sci fi's that are like that are really good. "Silent Running" is another one like that that I've enjoyed, then there's "2001 Space Odyssey".

Nothing to do with George Lucas (dunno where I got that from), but John Carpenter (They Live, Halloween, Big Trouble in Little China, etc)directed and co wrote it.

It is the middle of the 22nd century. Mankind has reached a point in it’s technological advances to enable colonization of the far reaches of the universe. Armed with Exponential Thermosteller Bombs, the scout ship DARK STAR travels out on the very rim of the known universe, far in advance of colony ships, prowling the unstable planets. Meanwhile the crew of Doolittle, Pinback, Boiler and Talby perform their jobs in a state of abject boredom.


Both very funny. Dark Star is set in space. It is a sci fi comedy. May be hard to find at your local store but ask 'em anyway.
They may not be what you are looking for. More sort of cult classics, but very good.

Zathura; features flesh eating reptillians. Tim Robbins plays the Dad. Now, Tim also appeared in Jacobs Ladder, then later on, Tim and partner Susan Sarandon opposed the war in Kuwait and paraded in front of camera's saluting the 'V' for victory sign. (interesting eh?)

I've seen 13th Floor some yr's ago, but can't remember the plot.


Being John Malkovich: way too many mind altering drugs for the director/producer.

Apparently there's a relevant movie called 'the astronauts' wife' with Johnny Depp. I havnt seen it but from what ive heard its about an alien being crossed with a human. Always an interesting topic

this was another bbc series actually 3 in all
13 episodes each available to buy or rent from amazon .!970s drama series about a plague that wipes out most of humanity .I have posted about his b4 .preping our minds 2 accept the situation if it ever occured .They live and enemy mine are excellent films it seems at certain times certain movies seem to break thru .THE ARRIVAL charlie sheen movie is a good one underground alien bases etc .
Superman returns is an intersesting theme ! the saviour alien who draws his power from the sun Who has a child half human hybrid , sorry if it spoils the plot 4 anyone :( watch how he extends his arms christ like several times thru the movie ?hmm.Also on the same them who remembers dangermouse tv cartoon mid 80's i think ,in the opening episode set in london england one of the centers of world government ??!! the voice over announces ,:D maybe its just late and im tired lol.
