I tried to tell my therapist for 8 years that I had been ritually abused as a child, but I don't believe that he ever really thought that I was telling the truth. At one point I shared a very graphic account of abuse in the form of a poem written by an alter, and I was told that it never happened. Sadly, I'm painfully aware that this sort of disbelief happens to survivors who seek therapy on a regular basis. We need more therapists who are willing to believe the survivors and who are not afraid to stand with their cliants against the abusers who use pain, fear and intimidation to wield control over those who cannot fight for themselves.
