Damn good programme! I'm glad they refer to the parallel with Troy. The city of Troy was supposedly just a story made up by Homer, until the place was discovered. Could Atlantis be the same? If Allen is right then we can no longer pretend that Columbus was the first Westerner to walk in the Americas.

Plato's story of Atlantis may well have been a social allegory, as Skeptics say it was, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't still true. Just because Orwell's "1984" is a similar allegory doesn't mean that its setting, London, is not a real city!

Tiahuanaco is a goldmine of history, but sadly there's a lot more we could have learned from it if it hadn't been vandalized by the Conquistadors. The doorway of the sun is not the only thing which points to its antiquity though. The harbour area is some miles from the lake, but the lake used to be much higher and when its shore was at the place where the harbour was built it was the time Plato gave for the age of Atlantis. The bit about their metalworking technology was most interesting. Also in America has been found ancient jewelry made from cast platinum, a metal that is notoriously difficult to forge. It melts at a very high temperature.

Myths of a prehistoric civilization destroyed in a global catastrophe are virtually endemic in cultures across the world. The stroy of Noah is another example in ours. There's the Welsh folktale of Cantref Y Gwaelod, the African myth of the Kingdom of Zaralelli, the story of Lyonesse in the Arthurian legends... the list is enormous.
