I'd recommend the Hellraiser trilogy all 3 films ( how ever it's spelled ) not sci fi but good research about Demons etc.

Clive Barker wrote some good books, there's much symbolic stories in them.

I am a number one Horror fan, I just enjoy the though of the scenes that make you jump. In Vanilla Sky I know the part where the car smashes into the other car, always makes me Jump out of my skin. But my best films have to be Saw, 1,2,3,4 can't wait to see if 5 comes out. Brilliant. The Ring and The Grudge were just boring versions of horror. I'm not a zombie fan, you can see many of them walking the street day in day out, so why make films about them. Give me good old blood and guts and I am there with my boots blacked.

2. The Grudge shit me up when I saw it at the cinema but not as scary on DVD.

3. The original Omen films are scary.

4. Frankenstein (1930s)

5. The Invisible Man (1930s), I like the old classics.

6. Body Snatchers starring Donald Sutherland.

The original japenese 'The Grudge' spooked the hell out of me:eek:

'Don't look now' - one creepy film

also, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist, all the Evil Deads, Dog Soilders, Nightwatch, Hellraiser 1 and 2, original Wicca Man, Event Horizon, The Quiet Earth, Alien, Eraserhead. The House By the Cemetery.
Dawn of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Zombie Flesheaters, night of the living dead.

I was fascinated as a kid by the idea of people making films to scare the shit out of each other - wow what a concept.

Hi Shodan!

I saw a one hour interview of horror movie Film director John Carpenter, at his home.
he said there were 2 kinds of horror movies. Those where you knew what was going on,
like THE ALIEN, where the enemy is OUT THERE. And the other horror movie where the enemy is within us all, and you do not know what will happen. Carpenter shows a bit of his movies where an old man is telling around a camp fire at night, a scary story to young boys who are getting scared and believing it all.
He also shows a movie about the devil, in whom he does not believe, but it is terrifying and the devil never shows his true face. Also shows ESCAPE FROM L.A., where at the end
the good guys gets the girl, but she gets shot by another jeaoulous man, showing love does not have happy ends.
Also shows how people knowing L.A. will be destroyed, continue to live there.
He says usually in Hollywood the good guys win. For a horror movie to be good, the bad guys must win, and the good guys lose.
He also talks about another movie called THE THING, where he shows how much nobler animals are than us. It is in Antartica with a wolf dog.
I loved this interview, not being a knower of horror movies, loved to listen to the tricks
used by one of the masters of this type of film making.

He says we are all afraid of the same things, darkness, the unknown, so in his movies he
will go into the dark room with us.

He says Hollywood is like a beautiful woman, and does not know when its make up will fall off in reality.

John Carpenter lives in a beautiful house with lots of green ,beautiful trees, fresh air, and a very extensive garden, where he drinks a nice cold beer with his interviewer on a nice sunny day .
Enjoyed the stuff.
It is not a movie, but knowing what the man behind the movie thinks is also very interesting.

INFINITE LOVE TO YOU,

Chandrakavi

Hey Chand,

yeah John Carpenter sounds like a great bloke, which reminds me he did -

They Live! - awesome film about waking up to reality, and the reptile theory.

Think he did the original Halloween as well with Jamie lee curtis, another classic.

I'd love to see that interview with him some time,

Mighty god of the Sun,
bountiful goddess of our orchards...
- Hear ye the words of the lord!

...accept our sacrifice and make our blossoms fruit.

Awake, ye heathens, and hold!

It is the Lord who hath laid waste your orchards!

It is he who hath made them bare!
- Reverence the sacrifice.

Hold, ye husbandmen,

because the harvest of
your field hath perished

and the vine is dried up

and the apple tree languisheth!

Even all the trees of the field are withered

because the truth is withered away

from the sons of men.

Desire shall fail

and ye shall all die

accursed!

Summer is a-comin' in

Loudly sing cuckoo
Grows the seed and blows the mead

And springs the wood anew

Sing cuckoo

Ewe bleats harshly after lamb
Cows after calves make moo

The lord's my shepherd
I'll not want
He takes me down
to lie
in pastures -

Oh, God.

Grows the seed and blows the mead
And springs the wood anew

- Sing cuckoo
- Oh, God.

I humbly entreat you for the soul
of this, thy servant, Neil Howie...
who will today depart from this world.

Do not deliver me into the enemy's hands...
or put me out of mind forever.

Let me not undergo the real pains of hell,
dear God, because I die unshriven

- Cuckoo, cuckoo
- and establish me
in that bliss
which knows no ending,

- Cuckoo
- through Christour lord.

Grows the seed and blows the mead Failure! Failure!

Sing cuckoo
Ewe bleats harshly after lamb
Cows after calves make moo

Bullock stamps and deer champs
Now shrilly sing cuckoo
Cuckoo, cuckoo
Wild bird are you
Be never still, cuckoo

I don't know, I mean is there at least more uncheesyness in a theatrical version or dvd of Salem's lot?. I am wondering, because I thought the one that I saw could of been PG or PG 13 probably. Not to mention also that Salem's Lot the Movie is like an insult to the books as a lot of movies tend to be.

A movie can never live upto a book , the mini series uncut (They released a heavily edited version that made even less sense ) was for the time very well made and despite a certain 80's feel to it it had a few genuinely jumpy moments , unlike most modern horror , it stands out to me for that reason , i didnt expect it to still have that quality .Also the vampire in the book was nothing like the vampire in the movie which was a direct rip off of nosferatu in looks at least :D

That is killer that there is an uncut version of it. The one I have is just silly. Its funny how also the movie saves Susan for the Last Scene of the Movie where Ben Mears stakes here in Quatemala or something. In the Book she is waiting for him asleep in the Cellar of the Marsten House after Barlow the Vampire leaves a great mocking letter to Ben Mears, the priest, the boy, The Doctor, and Matt the old guy. It is pretty brutal how he leaves Susan for Ben Mears to Find and have to killer. When I think about it, you can easily see why it was withheld from being in a Movie. Most people especially probably wouldn't of been able to digest the sheer unrelenting brutality and pyschological aspect of the book..

Very good book indeed

I watched "The Dark" starring Sean Bean. It was pretty good and spooky but got a little confusing near the end. But I recommend watching it.

http://www.lovefilm.com/lovefilm/images/products/6/66826-large.jpg

Also, "30 days of Night" which was a bit like a zombie film with very strange looking zombies/vampires. definitely worth a look at if you like zombie films. It starts off alot like the Stephen King movie "Storm of the Century" but dont be put off by that cos it gets alot better.
Unfortunately, I did have a SLIGHT feeling at times that the film was trying to promote "sacrifice" (as in war). Maybe the "Vampires" represented terrorists/muslims but maybe I am looking too deep into films these days but I really DO think that most films nowadays have a message in them and are used to help recruit kids for the army.
Also try NOT to notice the obligatory Pepsi "advert" in the film.

I love horror films. Invasion of the body snatchers (1978) is a good one.

I wonder if purpose of horror films is to make us fear death ? I was brought up watching horror films and I loved them but because of it I was frightened of anything to do with death, cemeteries and coffins. I think that that fear directs us down the wrong path and makes most of us unable to connect properly to our true selves.

Agreed...the one that was made in the 70's is the only remake that I can think of that's as good as the original.

Nosferatu is brilliant, the yampir is sh*t your pants scary to this day, has anyone seen the modern one when John Malkovich is recruited by the origional director... but he is a real vampire. Does anyone remember the origional 'Salems Lot" where the vampire kid flys through the window, now that scared me bad when I was little, just inherantly creepy. Looks like Carry on Screaming now but the fear was bad when I was 12.

Sci-fi its got to be Akira even if you arent into your anime and Casshern the Robot Hunter which is really an ordeal to watch but its unlinke anything else you will have ever seen.
Another great Jap film is Battle Royale, I would call this my favourite but that might disturb some people.
Any of the Alien films apart from the AVPS ( I dont care what anyone says, Aliend Resurection was absolute choice.
Metropolis, Clockwork Orange and most sci-fi by Kubrick are sound. Matrix, Fifth Element are wicked bad.
Cloverfield was done quite well for a modern Sci-fi. I loved Dog Soldiers, hated Doomsday with a passion.

I watched 1408 last night and the build up to him entering room 1408 was pretty nerve tingling. Overall the film was quite good I would say and John Cusack acted very well. The film itself was like a very long episode of the Twighlight Zone.

When the kid flew up at the window in Salem's Lot I was totally petrified! It was a great movie moment; the creepy heartbeat sound still gives me the willies just thinking of it.

How About 2010 A space Oddessy

I think you mean '2001' as '2010' was also titled 'The Year We Make Contact'. I agree with you anyway, '2001' was excellent and much copied.

I'd also choose the Director's Cut of 'Bladerunner' with THX1138 coming a close second place.

He's not my type... He's not a woman for a start!:D

But I must say he brings a lot of respectability to the "tough guy" movie role. During the 80's we got used to the bland and shallow templates of Schwartzeneggar and Stallone. Vin Diesel is just a tough as them, but he's charismatic, complicated, and eccentric with it. He's a much more stylish tough guy! Almost a "thinking woman's" tough guy. (Or a "thinking man's"!:D)
