Paolem -

I stopped smoking in August last year...... I'm 31 now and had smoked since I was 12!!!!

I fully believd I would never be able to quit and smoking was so ingraned in my routine I would even smoke when I woke up in the middle of the night.... or when seriously ill in bed with fever I would still smoke.

I used NewLeaf, the NHS stop smoking thing - essentialy a meeting with an advisor once a fortnight and a choice of all the various nicotine replacement therapys.

For the first time in my life I DECIDED I was stopping... I didnt wonder if I could...I just decided thats it, I'm stopping.

With the aid of nictone patches, I managed to stop point blank.

Its funny, I found it very easy.

I havnt smoked cigarettes since, but have no problem with having a spliff of pure weed - this doesnt make me want to smoke tobacco.

The smell of tobacco on others makes me want to be sick.

Good luck...you can do it. Just make the decision.

the thing is if its what you want to do it should be easy :)

My partner decided to stop smoking in January this year. We both smoked about 30 a day. He went on Champix from the legalised drug dealer....ooops I mean Dr and after about 4 days he cut right down.

I on the other hand had no intention of giving up, or so I thought. After Dave cut down I realised just how much I was smoking. I had thought many times prior that TPTB were putting something in the fags as everyone I knew seemed to be smoking about double what they were a couple of years prior. Anyway, I decided I would cut right back and went on this stop smoking program called quit7 which is all herbal stuff.

I have no will power whatsoever and to be honest I never ever thought I would give up but I gave it a try to support Dave. After 7 days I had given up completely.

To be honest it was the easiest thing in the world looking back. What made it difficult was the fact that I had heard a million times that giving up smoking was harder than giving up heroin. (I have never done that shit lol)

It was easy as I said but there were draw backs which we are both experiencing now. We still crave a fag especially after food but to be honest the feeling soon goes when you get into the habit of not smoking.

The main problems are the usual ones,,,, god all we do is eat!!! I have been know to have 2 breakfasts, 3 lunches, snacks and a large supper. I have never been able to put on weight all my life (I am 43) and it is only now I am finding I have put on a few pounds.

One thing that nearly made me go back to smoking was the sleepness nights. Apparantly insomnia is a side affect of giving up and having smoked for 27 years, man I/we suffered! It does go after a few weeks and looking back I am glad I stuck with it.

My advice is to do what you can to not think about smoking, busy your mind. the cravings will rear their ugly head but trust me, if you ignore them they will soon go, usually within minutes.

I wish you the best of luck my friend and hope my very watered down story gives you some inspiration.

:)

Try Champix, it's brilliant...I gave up on it a few months ago, after 4 days taking it you don't want to smoke and have no cravings. It made me feel a bit sick for about 30 minutes after taking the morning tablet but apart from that it was the easiest quit attempt I've ever done.

Ask your GP or ring the local smoking cessation service - you're 10 times more likely to quit if you have help from a trained smoking advisor than if you try to do it alone.

is champix not the anti depressant that makes some people go crazy and want to jump off very high places ?
E.S they were easier to buy back then you could buy one for ten pence a single it was affectionatly known as :)

think they where around sixty pence for ten or 49p for ronson the real chest bleeders cant really remember the price but i know even then i never could have afforded twenty with school lunch money.

'If its want you want to do it should be easy' perfect mind frame i used to quit. I've tired a number of times before but trust me you'll know when the time feels right. Went cold turkey after 3 years last month. I have tiny amounts of bacci with the green here and there but apart from that all is well once a pipe is bought. Might be coincidence but it was around the time i started to meditate, worth a try pal. I still miss the odd rolly ha but you'll get past it

Yeh, supposedly so, all i can say is it made cigarettes taste like shite and got rid of all my cravings....i resisted all urges to jump off buildings but then i've done enough acid to differentiate between a stupid thought that shouldn't be acted upon and an inspired thought that also shouldn't be acted upon :-)

Some people use Welbutrin for smoking cessation- it is marketed under another name for that purpose though. Buproprion (sp?) is the generic name. It is a DNRI type antidepressant, Dopamine Norepenephrine Reuptake Inhibitor. I am on a light dosage as part of my ADHD treatment and I found it was easy to tolerate. It also does not cause weight gain. Of course, this is a highly individual experience. I didn't use it until recently though- not for smoking cessation.

I quit smoking 8 years ago as a 30th birthday present to myself. I used the nicotine patches for a while but I kept forgetting to put them on in the morning and eventually just said "to hell with it", went cold turkey. It is worth it to get that monkey off of your back, but it will be hard at first. I felt like shit for about 2 months. I felt like I had a lot of crud coming up from my lungs. After that i was absolutely great. I would have cravings but I just told myself, "maybe later" and then later never came. That is a tactic my old boss taught me.

Working out was so much better- I used to work out when I was smoking too, and I didn't realize how much it hindered my performance until I was a non-smoker.

It was just a suggestion- in case you were open to a medication. I know not everyone is willing to do that. I hate taking meds, and I am typically a "health nut", but I had to do something about my neurological condition.

ADHD, unfortunately, is not transient, and mine had to be treated due to its severity. I was actually self medicating mine with the nicotine (IRONIC) for about 10 years, so most of my symptoms were not as bad until I quit, but it took several years after that to figure that out.

Chick in the avatar is Anput (thanx!) and I wish I could go to Ireland! Most of my ancestors are from there.

Well maybe "virtual tea" lol. I don't like Big Pharma either, but unfortunately I have to think about making a living and taking care of my family, so in order to be more productive and focused I have to use some of their stuff. The only natural alternative I know of is caffeine, which I already drink- has no affect on me really. Even special diets have been no use, so I chose to take the meds rather than continue to suffer and make my family suffer. I know why others reject them, and if you can solve any health problem naturally I agree that is best. Maybe I'll find an alternative one day too.

We used to bunk off school during games and our local corner shop used to sell us a cigarette and a match for 5p...

I gave up smoking today, well, I say gave up, I ran out of cigarettes. I started smoking again about 40 minutes later....

Crazy really. There we were in school games kit, and 'old Polly' didn't give a damn about selling 11 year olds a smoke!
As far as we were concerned, it wasn't the smoking that was bad for us, it was her cat that used to sleep in the sweets... :D

It's easy with the right motivation. Ask yourself if you want to keep making the government profit.

You risk developing horrible diseases.

Its costly.

Is that not enough reason to be motivated?

We've talked about this.... don't go in there alone, the basement troll is getting very light on his toes (and ufochick clipped his claws last week).....

@ the OP: i styopped smoking years ago, one day i just consciously flicked a switch in my mind and said 'no more.'

It was during a time when i moved house, so it was a whole new mind-check thing.

You will feel better for it - take up a hobby, something tht you enjoy doing, and set your sights that it will replace your old habit.

And good luck with it :D

I stopped 3 years ago. But for many years had cut back massively and was only smoking rolling tobacco for many years.

I used a combination of nicotine gum/patches and a hypnosis tape to cut back. Then I stopped over night by deciding to spend the money on something more constructive. I stopped effortlessly it was like a switch was turned off I just stopped with no effort...:D

I've seen people including family die of lung cancer, throat cancer.

Those without cancer and have even packed in a few years ago - lack of oxygen making them tired and out of breath, on a bad day it's to the point they cannot walk more than a 100 yards, or do much at all apart from sit most of the time, causing them frustration and to be angry, all they want to do is do stuff and be active like they were all their life.

I should quit tbh. Trying is probably the hardest thing I've ever done. And starting smoking will probably end up being one of the worst mistakes of my life. I was warned when I was younger to never start, but didn't listen to the old wise ones.

It costs an arm and a leg these days, when I started it was so inexpensive.

It wasn't hard either. Rather I was encouraged by a friend via the phrase...

"If I'm gonna smoke I want a very nice cigarette". She had just bummed one of my marb-lights and tore the filter off of it while getting a light.

After a bit more talk I tore my filter off too - it made me light headed, tasted better, and lasted 10x longer.

On the way home I got a pack of Camel non-filters and the next day procrastinated having my 1st cig till after my shower. It was gooooood. But then at work I didn't even want one till almost lunch. I still messed my buddies from the smoke room, but instead of a whole one, only had 1/2...

Anyway, from there on I procrastinated whenever I'd have a cig, and appreciated the cig for the fine tobacco it was.

Within about 3 months I was having to remind myself to smoke at least 1/day and figured OK 1/week... OK 1/month...

Its been about 2 months since my last cig. These days they're "spiritual experiences" in that they make me nautious, want to go lay down, but can't sleep and I end up dreaming. No wonder the native Americans "smoke em peace pipe". Me too.
