November 26 2007 promises to be an important day in the history of science. In a labyrinth of tunnels beneath the France/Swiss border, the most complex scientific instrument ever built will be put to use in one of the most ambitious experiments ever undertaken. The instrument is the Large Hadron Colider (LHC). The experiment is nothing less than a rerun of the big-bang.

In a worst case scenario, this leap in to the unknown could trigger a black-hole powerful enough to devour the entire earth. But thankfully the 5,000 or so scientists behind the project believe the chances of this happening are virtually zero.

Instead, by revisiting the beginning of time they hope to unravel some of the deepest secrets of our universe. Within these first few moments, the fundamental building blocks of the universe were created. The hope is that if we can grasp how these were formed, we can understand anything and everything around us.

The search for these 'fundamental particles' has occupied scientists for decades but there remains one particle that has stubbornly refused to appear in any experiment. The Higgs-Boson is so crucial to our understanding of the universe that it has been dubbed the 'God particle'. The God particle explains how matter arises.

But science on this scale doesn't come cheap. Over the 20 year lifespan of the experiment it is estimated that $6 billion will be lavished on the search for the God particle and other sub-atomic phenomena. If it is successful the LHC could open the door to a complete understanding of the world around us and even yield the ultimate goal of physics - a theory of everything.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is being built in a circular tunnel 27 km in circumference. The tunnel is buried around 50 to 175 m. underground. It straddles the Swiss and French borders on the outskirts of Geneva.

Update:
It planned to circulate the first beams in May 2008. First collisions at high energy are expected mid-2008 with the first results from the experiments soon after.

I know there are fears of what this device might do to the universe. Here's a good TV show about it: http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=6454521153918323669&q=bbc+horizon&total=159&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1

However the universe's equilibrium must be more stable than that. It is constantly hit by gamma-ray bursts, black holes and supernovae. If it can endure these then i fail to see what damage a glorified hula-hoop could do!

I'm hoping this guy get's the answers he is looking for from it.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtml?view=DETAILS&grid=A1YourView&xml=/earth/2007/11/14/scisurf114.xml

Then he can figure out that we are all interconnected, with everyone and everything, at ant time, in any place.

Finally then we will all understand what the ancient civilizations have been trying to tell us all this time, since the dawn of mankind (and before.) But we have been too blinded by materialism and egoism to see it.

Ultimately, I hope that he will figure out, categorically, that we are all infinite consciousness, that never die's but just evolves into a higher vibrational state consciousness, for infinity and beyond.

Obviously this won't all be worked out all at once, but I will predict a date for this amazing revelation, December 21st 2012. The date that humanity woke up on mass (I hope I'm right, that would be amazing!) ;)

Alternatively, I really hope they don't open up a mini black hole, that grows and grows, ultimately swallowing the earth, it's solar system and eventually the universe itself. That would be a bad ending, to know that we were responsible for destroying everything, ever!

Anyone seen The Mist?

It's a very frightening horror-movie, but interesting too because it involves interdimensional portals, like the ones the LHC might open! I'm sure the movie is just an exaggeration and OTT, but it makes me wonder what would happen if the LHC did do it.
