With all our great understanding of the universe and with all the ascension techniques like training our faculties of denial there is little wonder why prayer is no longer popular.
But before I go into it a bit more just imagine the process of a person when concentrating. Let’s say you’re playing basketball and you are suddenly challenged to pull off a feat that requires absolute precision and skill. Later, you might think about that moment in retrospect. You’ll know that it took up all of your concentration for a split second, you will realise that far from tense you felt extremely relaxed, you may feel that you envisioned it before or as it happened and you’ll be completely spontaneous with the creative way out of the situation. I’m sure most will know what I mean that you felt time slow down.
Now lets look at a great musician…You will see that he is moving effortlessly, he actually makes these complicated melodies look and sound easy when a lesser player will have great tension in playing easier pieces. The familiar phrase he made it look easy might spring to mind.
In both of the above the adept will have to learn a few primary rules or parameters to help learn good form but after that there are three fundamental elements after that which will improve his skill further; these are concentration, relaxation and spontaneity.
Eventually, he will meet a point of where he will plateau. Far from being as good as he can be the problem that this great person now has is that he is never tested to improve even further or his tests are rare, while he will be testing others often and they will be improving, he will find pushing it further increasingly difficult.

While you can concentrate only so much on mundane activities like sports and activities, you can concentrate on concentration limitlessly. For it might be once in a season you might be called upon to win a basketball game, you can have a much greater challenge to concentrate upon concentration every time you decide to practice.
Prayer is one of the most traditional and widespread forms of meditation yet because we live in a psychological universe, we lose prayer to triggers, positive affirmations and other ridiculous techniques.
If you like to do the above then why not do it but also have the intelligence of the divine as a guide also? I should be asking why wouldn’t you want that?
Firstly in order to get the best effect you need to learn to concentrate as hard as you can without producing tension in your body. In order to do that you must learn this posture that I laid out in this link. (http://davidicke.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11193)
The above posture will help you, you’ll probably feel like you can concentrate better sitting up cross legged or just sitting on a chair, the reason why this isn’t true is because when you lay in the above posture, you will have your back as straight as possible which opens up mental pathways which makes it seem as though your mind is more incessantly nagging, when in reality it is probably much less.
After you get into this posture and you have relaxed very nicely for at least 10 minutes then you should really start to concentrate the mind. You must breath as gently as possible because thoughts will hide in every crevasse they can find. This is also why you need the above posture (with your knees slightly bent) as when thoughts are forced out the mind; they turn to tension in the body. Music is one of the hardest things to listen out for but all that needs to stop for you to push your concentration.
The idea now is to concentrate with all your might. Those gurus’ that tell you not to worry about thoughts just want you to be their pupil forever and never their teacher. You must be like a person about to take a penalty kick to win the world cup. You must be like a warrior on the battlefield that is outnumbered ten to one. With all this concentration you have got to keep perfectly relaxed and even more so. Doing this sufficiently will produce profound effects even if this is your first time.
Listen carefully and follow your breathing as the mind hides in the breath so much. This is Zen meditation and these monks practice this and little else, they get very far very quickly with it but they could find easier ways.
Once you are extremely concentrated then you can slowly start your prayer. Maybe for the first time you should just while at the height of concentration say ”I am, insert name.” Just do this once and really be on the look out to see any doubts or irrational beliefs that you associate with your name. Once you say this then refocus as much as you can on concentration. Each time you say something, you’ll probably lose a bit of concentration so you must re-establish this.
Your mind is constantly in a state of insane ravings. I remember I was doing this once and I realised that I was producing a loud crashing sound in my head, over and over. I may have been doing this for year and not have known it, you may be too. This kind of stuff can cause an amazing amount of grief when added together.
When you are good at analysing your name then you should start to learn about a god or attributes of god. Traditional prayers usually involve declaring who you are and then what entity you want to contact, you should describe this entity with its attributes “The Divine creator of the universe, the bornless one” etc. Once you’ve made a good description then confess your adoration and then tell it what you seek along with showing your appreciation.
You must take care to analyse everything you say with the technique you used for reciting your name. Insincerity is probably why most people don’t pray and through concentration and analysis, you will build up real sincerity.
As your posture improves, you will be able to move into other positions but the above is a very good posture to straighten your back and only then only when you can have your back straight in other positions should you then change.
