Are sundogs a common occurance?

I put this in the general section but think its best asked here.

The reason I ask this is because of the amount of sundogs ive seen lately.Just over a year ago I had no idea what a sundog was never mind seeing them on a regular basis.Tonight there was a wonderful sundog and for the second time in 2 weeks I predicted it before it happened.

They are predictable because one thing happens prior to the event.They are always spraying heavily a couple of hours before and heavily spraying the area of the sky where the sun is.

So the theory of why they are spraying so heavily comes to mind again.Now it can't be to shield us from harmful sun rays as the sun is not that strong in the evening.I know its been asked before "what are they trying to hide?.

Sorry back on point can anyone tell me if sundogs are a common occurance meaning happening once a week or more sometimes?.I would be very thankful for some input here.

They do seem to be a common occurrence during the winter months and are a precursor to rain.

Many years ago, the nature-essayist Hal Borland wrote in his book Sundial of the Seasons that "Sun dogs and moon dogs are beautiful accents to a winter day or night as the rainbow is to a showery Summer day." Sun dogs usually appear in pairs, and are loyal to the sun (as moon dogs are loyal to the moon), sitting on each side of the solar orb along a horizontal line through the solar disk. Sun dogs appear in January, April, August, and October, the month does not really matter, but they are most regularly seen close to their solar master during winter months when the sun is low in the sky and ice crystals in the atmosphere are more common, but we can see them in any of the other seasons whenever cirrus clouds fuzz the sky above.

Sun dogs typically appear when the sun is low to the horizon, usually just prior to sunset or after sunrise, or during winter months at mid-latitudes. If the sun is low (horizon to about 15o above it), each sun dog is separated from the sun by 22o (or about two handsbreadth on extended arms), and both will lie on the circle of the 22o halo if one is present.

I do believe in chemtrails and I know the military have admitted to using Barium in their trails.

But the contrails are only adding to the sundog phenomenon. I would say.

Thank you for your reply and yes I think they are beautiful too.I spend a lot of time looking at the sky so many fascinating things to see.

Another sundog this morning that makes 2 in less than 24 hours.The sky is riddled with trails.

Artificial ones - yes

I have seen one definite bona fide one, about 20 odd years ago - stunning, like a 2nd sun in shape & size but prismatic - made up of rainbow colours. It was visible for 20 mins to the left of the sun, then re-appeared on the right.

I have seen dozens in the last year or two but whereas the original was in a cloudless sky on a beautiful sunny day, the recent ones occur amidst a load of gunky spew clouds from dissipating trails :rolleyes: The difference is more than apparent.
