Hello guys, just browsing the forums and noticed there's no meditation tuition thread.....in the meditation forum of all places!!
So, any links you guys have of interest (or questions) please post them here!!
Ok, I'll get the ball rolling:
Here is a free guided meditation by the Edgar Cayce A.R.E. group. It's really good and will help a lot. This doesn't run in Firefox for some reason, so open in Internet Explorer. ;)
Also, there are a load of excellent audio CDs out there of amazingly relaxing tones and stuff. If you go to www.isohunt.com and search for "brain sync guided meditation", you'll find an amazing audio CD that will help a lot.
Another thing that I am currently using is the audio files from Holosync. They have been making amazing meditation tracks that truly relax you to the core (by sending out frequencies) and are so relaxing. But beware....it's quite expensive!!

Good luck with all you meditations!

TITHING
The Bible says that you should give 10% to God. Religion has jumped on that and decreed that God meant that you should give THEM 10% of your money.
Well what it really means is related to the fact that you use 10% of your brain. When you go into meditation you are to shut down that 10% by taking no thought. When you turn the thoughts off, shut the left side down, you are tithing.
Of course that is not going to make any money for the cults of the world but that is exactly what Jesus meant when he said, take no thought. Give the 10%, tithe and you will get 100% back.
Keep your money in your pocket. :D

True medidation goes without any drugs, dont use drugs!
Focus on the moment, the "now", all that exists, exists now. Follow your breath, dont control it, if you breath is long, follow it, if its short, follow it.
Keep your eyes open, only a fool will be disturbed by his 5 senses, thats why the best meditation is reached when you can face the 5 senses head on.
Dont use music or stuff like that, best is a completely silent room if your a beginner.
When you are experienced you could also meditate on a crowded train, while your doing the laundry or waiting in line at your local supermarket!
Everything you do can be meditation and is meditation!
A nice Zen Koan which explains this:
The Zen master advised his students: "When you eat, just eat. When you read the newspaper, just read the newspaper. Don't do anything other than what you are doing." One day a student saw him reading the newspaper while he was eating. The student asked if this did not contradict his teaching. The master replied: "When you eat and read the newspaper, just eat and read the newspaper."

Well, sometimes it can be boring, you thought meditation would be a great time of peace and happiness everytime you do it?
Ofcourse not! We are people! Sometimes we are bored or excited, sometimes were happy and other times we feel down.
Just continue meditating.
Even in meditation there are ups and downs, deeper meditation and somewhat more shallow meditation. Its just like life!
The most important thing however is finishing what you start. Sit there for half a hour a day (or more) and you will save the world! If you quit your ego wins, we cant let that bastard named ego win!

One Reality only--
How deep and far-reaching!
The ten thousand things--
How confusingly multifarious!
The true and the conventional are indeed intermingling,
But essentially of the same substance they are.
The wise and the unenlightened are indeed distinguishable,
But in the Way they are united as one.
Desirest thou to find its limits?
How broadly expanding! It is limitless!
How vaguely it vanishes away! Its ends are never reached!
It originates in beginningless time, it terminates in endless time.

I dont have much experience with meditation ect but i think what you say sounds right to me. I can see how there would be boundries to what you should and shouldnt do if you get me. I find music helps me but im a very musical person, i make music and listen all the time so its a big part of who i am. Id depends on the way you view music and how you feel about what youre listening to. If you use music though i wouldnt buy a specialist cd. just put on a tune that makes you feel great whatever it is. Thats when music can truly help you, it has to be something youre passionate about and something that generates alot of YOUR power and YOUR freedom.

I havent tried with music but I guess I ought to try it to give any feedback on that. Breathing techniques though, seems quite important. How can you see breathing techniques as unnatural? In every day life and work I always use a bit of breathing to calm and center myself again, so I can better focus at the tasks at hand. Sometimes just a single inhale exhale and feeling yourself calm down, then continue whatever.
Before meditating I have always found it very rewarding to begin by inhaling and exhaling deeply 3 times, then go through each part of your body from the feet and up to make sure everything is calmed and focused, then the mediation can begin :)
I have to admit I havent done any all out meditation for years... I guess I ought to :)

Its calming the mind chatter thats the worse for me, its almost like outside forces are throwing thoughts in my head, so i use a crystal which makes things easier when cleaning out the closet so to speak.
Once halfway in, has anyone noticed the pulsating shadows circling your eyes
(when they are closed), its prob just blood pumping, but looking at this also helps getting in deeper.
Does anyone meditate at night on there own?
I cant seem to do this, noises and creeks and darkness, spooks me out!
Any ideas how to conqour this?:)

yeah i do day and night. I started mediation via Yoga class and then started on my own at home. meditation takes many many years to get right and evan the most accomplished teachers still dont meditate to the fullest degree. i usually chant OM for a while to calm the mind, light a candle and focus on the candle so your mind dosent stray, you'll have something to focus on. meditation though should be carried through into all hours of the day. when you go for a walk, focus on everything in front of you, ie. dogs, trees ect ect. When your sitting at a desk, stop for a few minutes and think/focus on your being and whats around you..this is a form of meditation.
re you getting spooked out...sorry sweetie i dont have an answer for you there. if you dont like music in the background (there are some great meditation c.ds out there), then maybe try meditating a few minutes, then a few min more the next night ect ect. work yourself into it.
Good luck! :)

Hey Rossus,
I tried your link there in your sig. It was great, very relaxing. I didn't realize it had finished and I sat there in a meditative state for a while just sort of staring - and really enjoying it, feeling really zoned out.
I think there is a lot to be said for the 'concentration on breathing' technique too. That is the technique that I have been using up to now and although I am still a novice it makes me very relaxed very quickly and the feeling can stay with you for a while after.
all in all, a damn good thing in my humble opinion. Thank you all for introducing me to it.

I used to have a friend who always had to have noise. She constantly left the television on in her house. She had to have a radio or music playing while away from home. If she was somewhere without these things she talked endlessly and said nothing. She didn't like to sit. She claimed it was boring.
Through my own self-discovery I have realized that when the outside noise stops, a person is left only with their selves. When external is removed, the internal can be heard. Describing meditation as boring is self-condemnation. It is saying, "I can't look at myself." Learn to value the sound of silence.
My friend was constantly trying to drown out her own voice because she dared not face herself. She was living and acting out of fear. Boredom is an emotion of fear. I don't really blame her as I was also once as bad as she. Don't listen to these feeling of boredom. Conquer them. They will fade with time and what is left is not to be missed.
No one is truly boring. Contained within each person is enough information to make the internet seem trivial. There is enough there for hundreds of lifetimes of self-discovery. "People will do anything, no matter how absurd, to stop from facing their souls." -Jung
Also, in the beginning it is wise to meditate for only 10 minutes or so.
I have a question also. I'm interested in deeper levels of meditation where pain is numbed or stopped or other unusual abilities surface. Does anyone know which would be wise to study?

Has anyone here ever tried Mantra-Meditation?
I have found it to be the easiest and most practical form of Meditation.
In particular i have found the ancient Sanskrit 'Maha-Mantra' to be very effective and immediate.
(It can be thought, whispered, spoken, chanted or sung!)
It's effects start with stress-relief & end with self-realization.
I would recommend everyone to give it a try, even if only for 10 minutes a day. :)

Benefits of Mantra-Meditation
Everyone knows that a happy life requires good health. Proper diet, adequate exercise, and sufficient rest are necessary to keep our bodies strong and fit. If we neglect these demands, our bodies become weakened and resistance wanes. Highly susceptible to infection, we eventually become ill.
More important, but less well known, is the inner self's need for spiritual nourishment and attention. If we ignore our spiritual health requirements, we become overwhelmed by negative material tendencies like anxiety, hatred, loneliness, prejudice, greed, boredom, envy, and anger.
In order to counteract and prevent these subtle infections of the self, we should, as recommended in the Vedic literatures, incorporate into our lives a program of self-examination and steady inner growth, based on spiritual strength and clarity of thought.
The transcendental potency necessary for developing complete psychological and spiritual fulfillment is already present within everyone. It must, however, be uncovered by a genuine spiritual process. Of all such authentic processes, India's timeless Vedas tell us that meditation on the Hare Krsna mantra is the most powerful.
The initial result of chanting the Hare Krsna mantra is summarized by Srila Prabhupada in his commentary on the Bhagavad-gita: "We have practical experience that any person who is chanting the holy names of Krsna (Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare) in course of time feels some transcendental pleasure and very quickly becomes purified of all material contamination."
In the preliminary stages of chanting, the practitioner experiences a clearing of consciousness, peace of mind, and relief from unwanted drives and habits. As one develops more realization by chanting, he perceives the original, spiritual existence of the self. According to the Bhagavad-gita, this enlightened state "is characterized by one's ability to see the self by the pure mind and to relish and rejoice in the self "

How did you find it? Chanting "Om"?
In Bhagavad-gita (7.8) Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead said:
I am the taste of water, the light of the sun and the moon, the syllable om in the Vedic mantras; I am the sound in ether and ability in man.
The light of the sun and the moon is also originally emanating from the brahmajyoti, which is the impersonal effulgence of the Lord. Similarly pranava or the omkara transcendental sound used in the beginning of every Vedic hymn to address the Supreme Lord also emanates from Him. Because the impersonalists are very much afraid of addressing the Supreme Lord Krsna by His innumerable names, they prefer to vibrate the transcendental sound omkara. But they do not realize that omkara is the sound representation of Krsna.

On “OM”
Of all the sacred sounds on this planet, the one that is most often chanted is the “OM”. Undoubtedly, at any given moment, there is someone, somewhere chanting this sacred mantra. The “OM ” is considered one of the oldest vocal sounds in existence—many speculate that it has been chanted for untold thousands of years. It is considered to be the original, primordial sound—the mantra of creation.
OM is a mantra from the Hindu tradition. OM is a Sanskrit word, which is said to be the original primordial creative sound from which the universe and all of creation first manifested. While pronounced “OM”, certain Sanskrit scholars state that it is written as “AUM”. Many consider the two words to be interchangeable because of this. OM is said to be the sound that contains all sounds--it is the totality of all other sounds. Swami Sivananda Radha says, “The cosmic sound AUM, or its condensed form, OM, is the origin of all other sound. OM is everything. It is the name of God.”
OM is a multi-dimensional sound, and as such, may be understood a number of different ways. One understanding is that OM (or it’s written form “AUM”) represents attributes of the major trinity of Hindu gods; Brahman, Vishnu and Shiva. The sounding of the “A” represents the energy of Brahman, the creator and the creational process. The middle portion of the sound, the “U” represents the energy of Vishnu, the preserver and relates to the maintenance and preservation of what has been created. The final “M” represents the energy of Shiva, the transformer and relates to the vital transformational energy to shift and change that which has been created and preserved.
Another understanding of the OM (or “AUM”) is that the “A” represents the physical plane, the “U” the “mental and astral planes” and the “M, all that is beyond the reach of the intellect. “AUM” or OM is the initial syllable, which begins almost all mantras. Thus OM represents the Infinite, the One Mind, the all embracing consciousness—that which is the very essence of existence.
In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the OM (“AUM”) represents different aspects of the trinity of the Body, Speech and Mind of the Buddha, or an enlightened being. The “A” represents the Body, the “U” represents Speech, and the “M” represents the Mind. Sounding the AUM in this manner puts one in resonance with these qualities of consciousness.
The OM is a Bija (or “seed”) mantra and may be utilized to resonate the third eye. However, it may also be chanted as a 3 syllable word “AUM” (and pronounced as “AH – OH - MMM”) to resonate the heart, the throat and the crown chakras. In fact, the OM can, through our intent, become a multi-purpose mantra with capabilities of resonating and aligning all the chakras—of cleansing imbalanced energies and purifying self. Sung with sincerity and devotion, vocalization of the OM can put the chanter in touch with the source of all creation, providing a bridge between the spiritual and physical dimensions and opening the way for inspirational contact with higher realms and beings.
Many people ask if there is indeed a correct pronunciation for the OM. Is it “OM” or “AUM” or something else? In reality, there does not seem to be a correct pronunciation. Depending upon the country, language and dialect, the OM can be pronounced “AUM, UM, UNG, ANG, ONG” and so on. Yet, the resonance and effects of this mantra seem to be very similar despite varied differences in pronunciation. Much depends upon the intention of the person creating the sound—where do they wish the “OM” to resonate—which chakra and for what purpose. .

ON CHANTING: Quoted from The Shobogenzo by Dogen Zenji:
"Foolishly using your mouth to repeatedly chant something thousands upon thousands of times in an attempt to arrive at the Way of Buddhas is like believing you can reach the south by driving your cart northward. It is also like someone trying to put a square peg in a round hole. Someone who reads passages in religious works while remaining in the dark about the path of spiritual training is someone who would pay a visit to a doctor and leave behind what the doctor has prescribed. What is to be gained from that? Keeping sound flowing incessantly from the mouth is like the springtime day-andnight croaking of a frog in a rice paddy: ultimately, this too produces no benefit."

Mantra repetition is an ancient meditation technique extensively used India and Tibet.
Mantra is intrinsically related to sound. Mantra is sound, and sound is reverberating in everything in this universe. When water flows, the gurgling sound it makes, is mantra. When wind blows through the trees, the rustling sound it produces is mantra. When we walk on the earth, our footsteps produce sound, and that too is mantra. Within human beings there is a self-born, indestructible sound which repeats itself constantly, along with our breathing and this sound is also a mantra.
Sound has enormous power, in fact it has the power to create an entire universe. It is written that God originally manifested as sound:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (New Testament, John1:1-2)
According to ancient Indian belief in the beginning there was sound, which reverberated as Om and from that sound everything came into existence.
Even modern scientist are beginning to recognize as our ancient sages did, that there exists a vibration which reverberates ceaselessly throughout the cosmos.
When letters and syllables come together, they form words. Both our spiritual and our mundane life are possible only because of words; without language, we can not carry out any of our activities. Each word we use has its own power and produces it own reaction. A mantra is no ordinary combination of letters and syllables, but a living force. The Name of God is not different from God. Mantra has been called the sound-body of God: It is God in the form of sound.
Mantra meditation is the repetition of the Names of God which are transcendental sound vibrations that awaken the dormant Love of God in our hearts and minds.

i think your missing the point..........mantras help to keep the mind on course from thinking about all the clutter that comes into your head-not everybody is able to sit in silence and meditate straight away -that takes years of practice i would say......but for people just starting out it is a helpfull tool-if you have a problem with the words used as u dont belive in it -you can choose your own word to focus on..................;)
As an object of concentration, like any other, a mantra can help to still the mind. While you are reciting a mantra out loud or internally, there tends to be less mental chatter. Even if there is a parallel stream of internal discourse going on at the same time as the mantra, the chanting creates more of a sense of continuity, which will grow with practice. The word Mantra is said to mean, “that which protects the mind.”

During meditation I like to focus on a flame, or focus on my breathing, or imagine a triangle. As I progress to deeper levels I find that these things often vanish and my mind is completely still.
Also, I've been noticing surges of euphoria during meditation. I was curious if this could be qi and if there was any ways of holding, harnessing, and using this qi to help others. It seems to come easier and easier the more I experience it.
Hey, I Really want to take up meditation because i Know how powerful it is, and how you can use it to your advantage in alot of situations.
Could someone pm me. And teach me methods on meditation and the different types like healing techniques, making you stronger. Stuff like that.
You know all That stuff like visualising you have a ball of energy around you.
That kind of stuff.
Thanks.

The purpose of meditation is to gain the understanding that ego is not self. True self awareness is also the awareness of the true nature of humanity, you cannot see the bigger picture from outside, you have to look inside.
I saw someone condemn the use of "drugs". That expression alone conveys a socially imprinted view.
1) Cannabis is not a drug. It is a herb. There are dopamine receptors within the brain that are perfectly suited to the molecular structure of THC. There is no other substance on earth that fits in with our biological framework in this way. Suggesting cannabis and ourselves to be in perfect alignment for that particular useage.
2)Shamans and other practitioners have used certain naturally occuring plant based substances for thousands of years in order to achieve heightened states.
3) There is a huge difference between synthetically made neurotoxins (such as PCP and crystal meth) and naturally sourced hallucinogens.
I just needed to make those points :p I think that it is beneficial to meditate without the use of certain traditional substances, but occasionally it is an excellent way of exploring the complexity of the psyche, and loosening the veils. It is unfair to the rest of us if an individual conveys an opinion that in conveyance seemingly applies to all, when infact they are sharing their own inhibitions and opposition to the experience. This adds to ignorance.
As i said, meditation is an exploration of self, it is scary when you are pulled free of the chains you believed kept you safe and "simple". When you realise ego is not you, your loss of identity (when actually you have gained it) can topple weaker minds over the proverbial cliff.

Your EGO is so BIG it cannot let go of itself so you need to recite stupid words time after time to distract your EGO from coming up with new thoughts. If you never try to start taming your mind will never get anywhere.

Often the mind is conditioned to be busy and in overdrive.
As we move further away from the source, our ego becomes louder to replace that source.
Mantras can be eventually dropped. It is often difficult to go from being busy to no thought.

Take a look at:
http://www.potseeds.co.uk
There is ways to stop using hard narcotics on that site, and ways to get high or whatever drug trips are refered to as these days. Most importantly it does so with proffesional guidance and information.
Take a look at After C (http://www.potseeds.co.uk/afterparty/index.htm#PY00004). Good to recover from the damage cocaine does to the body.
I think there is a recommended use per day like regular medication, but with being able to do some drugs legally in mind as well.
I dont do drugs myself, so I am no expert at all on any of this. In fact I barely know the names and effects of the different kinds of drugs. Only that cocaine and speed gives energy and weed dampens too much energy. cocaine and speed is probably unhealthy even in its cleanest form, but this site offers ways to get out of those kinds of addictions without turning away from drugs all together.
There is probably some stuff that is good for meditation there as well :) I imagine weed and tobacco is good for meditating. Tobacco I have tried, and still do now and then :)

Some times I do smoke alot when I need to calm my body after too many energy drinks or other kinds of stimulants that causes my mind to race away 24/7. Like Coca Cola, which thankfully doesnt contain cocain anymore, as far as I know anyway, but still does contain caffeine and lots of sugar. Alcohol and tobacco has the calming effect instead.
My favorite drink is rum and cola :) That mix is kind of balanced, depending on how well you mix it.

Music is of course also very great for meditating :) Some use audio CDs the sound of a beach with waves going back and forth, and probably some birds in the background. The thing is, we can make it overselves :D Many mobile phones today can act as a dictaphone and record stuff like that, or maybe a digital video camera can be used as well. Or maybe a good old casette player/recorder? :) Then find a way to get it on a computer if needed, but remember to use high quality MP3 if using the MP3 format. Otherwise it cuts off the highest and lowest frequencies, and that doesnt make for the harmonic sound needed for this.
I think the No Stress collection might also work, but not sure. Centerpoint might be a better way, and it is probably a bit like sound drugs as some say, but if you know how to moderate yourself, then it should be good. Also sound doesnt seem to me as it could have the same damaging effects as hardcore drugs like cocaine, which doesnt have anything to do with meditating anyway, or clearing the mind.
Maybe another way to look at it is that weed, tobacco and alcohol makes us look into ourselves, and think deep thoughts. The philosophical way probably. caffeine, cocaine, sugar and other energy stimulants however makes us focus on the present and live now. Focus on the external world rather than the internal. but its just a theory I just came up with. Anyone who care to comment on it?

Using drugs while meditating is like those special effects in Hollywood movies, looks nice but in the end its just pixels.
Using drugs while meditating is like saying you passed the test while you were cheating.

There are no expectations in meditation, having expectations is not meditation and will only obstruct, there is no goal, the path is meditation itself! The way blablablabla is more important than the goal blabla!
Being upright, spin erect at all times is the way to meditate!
The right frame of mind is whatever frame of mind is present when meditating!

What I'm concerned with about meditation is disciplining the mind, being able to ease physical pain, and liberate myself from fear.
I am curious as to whether anyone has achieved these things and if so how? By which method of meditation did they do these things.
As of now I use meditation as a form of relaxation and focus but I would like to go deeper but I am confused as to how. I've seen the monks self-immolate without crying out in pain so I know it's possible, but how? I realize it'll take years to potentially reach that level but years I have as I'm a young man.

I saw this once while meditating. I simply wanted to see what the universe looked like from the outside, with no expectations, I began to see this white/blue fog, and the ascended out away from it. What I saw was so shocking I was snapped out of it. This was 10 years ago. I It gave me great peace. Years later I was in a mystical store and saw this drawing, it is precisely what I saw. The artist is Emery Bear and it's called Angelic Grace. All of his paintings are from meditative visions.

Soglad, I appreciate your post, but that ain't meditation. Real meditation as pertaining to enlightenment has nothing to do with chakras, audio cd's, Edgar Cayce, or techniques of any kind.
Edgar Cayce wasn't practicing enlightenment-based meditation, he was practicing MIND meditation.

bah centerpoint;;;
i don't like that kind of meditation.
artificial brainfrequencies changing... it's not natural.
for meditation you don't need a cd, in fact i would recommend against music... but that's only my experience.
the kind of meditation i like is the one in my sig.... once u know how to u can do it anywhere anytime... with or without music... with or without noise...
it al doesn't matter. meditation is who you are... you have always the oppurtunity to go back to yourself.
breathing techniques is also something i recommend against.
why try control your meditation? it will only create more confusion.
clarity comes... when you let go all control.
meditation is always happening.
when you stop trying to get anything
a fuck, a house or even a "meditation"
you will see that we speak no lie :)
Why do you tell people to read an overly complicated book in your sig? How does confusing them move them forward? This is exactly what the Illuminati do through the New Age movement. They create the impression that enlightenment/spirituality is complicated, and that one needs to LEARN things.

:D
That's right. But the point is that he is focused on what he's doing 100%.

Try the Mans way of meditating: Clear your mind. Think Non Thinking. Experience Emptiness. Become Transparant. Be like Water.
It's not that it's the kids way of meditating, it's that it really has nothing to do with spirituality. There are 2 types of meditation. The movement outward towards the ego through mind meditation, and the movement inward towards the spirit (enlightenment) which is no-mind meditation.

I agree, only you should of said Tibetan Buddhism as this is the corrupt version of buddhism which focusses on reading scriptures and debating.
The true original teachings as taught by The Buddha. Introduced in the East by Bodhidharma, the original teachings are the way to enlightenment. These teachings are called Mahayana Buddhism and are only found in China and Japan, better known as Chan in China and Zen in Japan.

Try sitting somewhere peaceful and quiet, with eyes closed and back straight, and gently concentrating on the breath. With the focus being at the tip of your nose. Notice the cool air as it enters your nostrils and the warm air as it leaves. When focussing on this, if thoughts arise, dont follow them. Always bring your attention back to the breath.
I have been enthusiastic about this form of mediation since I began meditating in February of this year. don't see meditation as something you have to practice: or an excerise, a goal to atend it's all about awareness.
when was the last time you opened a door and said to yourself, hey i just openened this door..., probably it was just an integrated automatism
It's about attention 100% of the time, not goig into "auto/ sleep mode"
Ib have a family with 2 kids and a busy life , just can't say hey i'm gonna meditate now for an hour without beiing interupted etc... for a variety of reasons, so i meditate all day by being aware what i do, even opening a door, the walking up the stairs etc
You can even view your work as meditation by just being aware, and not going into robot mode.

You know what, I can dig that. No one can tell you how to meditate or if your doing it right, it is purely point of view. You get out of it what you want to get out of it. You don't have to believe anything about chakras or sit with legs crossed for hours. You just have to be aware of yourself just like you said. Spot on post imho

is day-dreaming a form of meditation??
r3sonator
28-09-2008, 08:08 PM
I wouldnt know, because what is meditation? The word meditation has been used for so much different things. Different meditations: praying, dancing, shanting, sitting in lotus position and trying not to think then you are thinking "i must not think", awareness, using psychedelics, breathing techniques, yoga, sun gazing, etc.. Bodhidarma got enlightened from looking at a wall for 10 years, thrust your own instinct, don't do it because someone says do this do that etc, all the answers are within you.
What i think i know is that daydreaming is the result of a calculation of the subconcsiusness about a problem, stuff you experienced good or bad, trying to reach you when you are bored, like doing the work routine, driving a car for hours... (suppressed consciousness) Embrace the moment, learn from it. The thing is you only know when you daydreamed when you shoot "awake" again, consciousness taking over the subconsciousness again.
If you wan't to look at it as meditation, then it is, you create your own reality. You can't force daydreaming, just like meditation, it just happens when you are "aware"

Psychedelics and "meditation" which is just a new age word for concentration is how it was always meant to be done. Never meditating with psychedelics is like driving Del boys three wheeler round a formula 1 track. By the time you finish the course you are ready to die.
Carve yourself out a night away from the kids, take some shrooms and meditate and I guarantee you will be a light year ahead of a whole life of meditating.
But people won't do that, they are either afraid of whats in their own head or they are still under the illusion that a psychedelics plant is wrong. Meditation alone is the safe way for people to relieve stress, that's it no more no less. Its does nothing more than Diazepam. If you want to take your consciousness to unattainable heights then you have got to get high, there is no other way around it...lol

Psychedelics and "meditation" which is just a new age word for concentration is how it was always meant to be done. Never meditating with psychedelics is like driving Del boys three wheeler round a formula 1 track. By the time you finish the course you are ready to die.

I agree using psychedelics here and there, not often, for meditative purposes can teach you what you achieve meditating in "normal" state for 10 years, but be sure you can handle the amount of "subhuman consciousness, enlightment, knowledge, awareness" or whatever you wanna call it, or else you will truly land in the nuthouse going crazy, kinda like shortcircuiting the brain. You should be free the next few days to retrospect the experience and learn from it, coming back to "earth" (grounding yourself again)
Contradictionary to this i say take a good dose, not massive but also not a recreational dose, better to have a breakthrough experience then just laughing like a nutter :D

The best meditation comes from intention and the heart there are no set rules necessary, just breathe and relax, it'll come to you. You don't need to sit lotus style and shut the world out, try meditation on this level during your daily routine, you'd be surprised at the results.

I've started meditation with going (literally diving) into my heart chackra as a start and then just follow what's coming. I've had spiral stairs going down, and every time I meditated there was something else to do, the stairs went deeper and deeper every time. One time I had to warm up a cold blue ball and it became a warm red, starting to warm the walls around which became red as well, and from then on I never had cold hands again, except during winter, being outside without gloves. :D
I met dwarfs and fairies and more, walked down a dark corridor with pictures on the wall from things that frighten me (some that I even didn't know where the fear was coming from exactly) and I could turn the frightening pictures in positive ones, like a beach or a cat or whatever.
I could clean out a room that was fully packed with black stuff/entities, and paint it new.
It has a big impact on my daily life, it is more peaceful and more positive.
so, for being bored, as someone mentioned, THAT could be a start. :)

The past is already past.
Don’t try to regain it.
The present does not stay.
Don’t try to touch it.
From moment to moment.
The future has not come;
Don’t think about it
Beforehand.
Whatever comes to the eye,
Leave it be.
There are no commandments
To be kept;
There’s no filth to be cleansed.
With empty mind really
Penetrated, the dharmas
Have no life.
When you can be like this,
You’ve completed
The ultimate attainment.

It's a bit new to me but I'm trying to get into a habit of practicing, a good half an hour a couple of times a week is a good way to get started. If it's as beneficial as people make it out to be then we'd all be stupid not to experiment with it.
I usually sit on my legs because I find it easier to keep my back straight (aligning the spine and chakras), I’m a bit of a slouchier otherwise :D
http://www.allaboutyoga.co.uk/Images/myo/largepose50pic1.jpg
Then I calm my mind as much as I can, finding a natural breathing pattern but I don't concentrate on it. When I feel focused (can take up to 5 minutes) I do a little consecration to share any benefits with the whole manifestation… I don’t know if it help but it can’t harm.
I find it helps to concentrate on a chakra when using a mantra. I think this can be any type of signal, a sound, an emotion even a personal quality like playfulness or being assertive.
If I use a mantra like a sound (internal mental chant) I focus on Ajna by closing my eyes and I concentrating on feeling a subtle vibration in the area of the forehead (crossing the eyes and looking up can help to find it at first). I was given a mantra which is chanted like a word (a mental resonance) and recieved like a sound/frequency. A example silly example would be to chant the word woof and receive the sound of a dog barking.
Meditating on an emotion like love, I focus on anahata :p which is near the heart.
When focused on the chakra I then chant the mantra, transmitting and receiving it like a mobile phone does a signal.
I start by transmitting the mantra, visualising the sound/feeling like a ball of light growing spherically, emitting away from my body. I do this a few times and then I aim to receive the mantra back the same number of times before doing it again. If the mantra is love then focus on receiving that feeling, I've found it can be quite overwhelming :)

Calling mother nature's effect on consciousness weak is about the dumbest thing I have heard from anyone claiming to know anything about meditation.
Only a fool would call a scared plant older than your entire method of meditation a "Drug". Who do you think made the plant in the first place ya bin lid??
Your interpretation of "weak" is a reflection of your own shortcomings not anyone else's which makes me think your only commenting here for the pat on the back you think you are owed.
You have no idea what you are talking about or is EVERY single culture on this earth who has shamanistic practices going back thousands of years just simply wrong in your head?. All you have done here is show your inability to see another point of view which proves you are no more in tune with nature than your arsehole is with your earhole.
If you see anything in the Universe as being separate from the universe then you are truly just plain stupid, The very word "Universe" means everything, try finding the right gear for your brain before you commit to text.
Someone into meditation whole heartedly would have just said "how you get there is not important, just getting there is, there is no right way", that I could have respected.
Exactly who are you to say anyone is wrong or weak minded with what they do with their take on consciousness? I can't stand an ego driven fool, who ever you paid to teach you how to meditate is kicking back with a joint laughing their ass of at your expense.
Totally sorry to everyone else here for adding a touch of tension, it was not my intention. Reading all your posts regarding your personal methods of meditation has helped me.

great line :D
i think though that there are many different types of meditation, and even within those types the meditative state can be divided into further 'types.'
Working with drugs is simply one way. Mother nature provided the drugs, and the all of mushrooms, opiates, ayahuaska, marajuana's and piote etc are ideal journey material. Although i don't think that journeying is a meditation as such.
Experimenting with the blends gifted to us from nature is a wonderful experience, though i think meditation is to still the mind and allow us to focus more clearly. i think that meditation through imbibation is a way of recieving guidance from whatever energy we choose to embibe / align ourselves with, visualisation is another type of meditation, but is very different from meditation in itself. Yoga, ti-chi, kata, swimming, walking, controlled breathing are all simply types.
i have been working on meditative practice these last few months, with the aim of aligning the Self with crystal frequencies, stilling the mind of all thought with the single focus being on a piece of quartz that i have studied earlier. That single thought expounds the human form into higher sense states and integrates the crystal energy into the self and brings in profound healing. I've been working on this for many months, it has some fantastic rewards.
My teacher, a buddhist lama, has always said that meditation should be done wth the eyes open. Sit in a field, or on a mountain and observe reality, observe nature. Don't sit in a darkened room with your eyes shut, shutting out the world. Simply look and experience the art of experience. his words are beautiful and so very true. He has even bought back things from meditation, flowers typically, and i have seen him open his hand and allow sand to fall onto the carpet of his shrine room from a meditation where we walked on an Ibiza beach. The beach was lovelly and i had the sensation of sea and sand, though i wasn't able to bring the sand back. That was trully a magical moment, and one day if i can do that i will know i have attained something very very special :D
Zen said something right, right back on the first page...
Focus on the moment, the "now", all that exists, exists now. Follow your breath, dont control it, if you breath is long, follow it, if its short, follow it.
Meditation is about stillness, visionary experience is nothing more than a bonus :D
One drug that i find particularly amazing is oxygen! it is wondrous. If you get the cahnce to try this, it is trully exhilerating, though to begin with it is difficult. Breath in and out continually for 20 minutes, and i mean without pausing and without doing anything else but breathing in and out. The breath can be fast or slow, it doesn't matter - so long as you don't pause between breathes. Still the mind completely and focus only on breathing. Don't move at all, just allow the body to breathe in and out, without pause. After twenty minutes, pause for five minutes or so and breathe normally. Walk around the room for a minute or so, and then repeat the whole twenty minutes again. i know it sounds odd, but very few people actually know how to breathe properly (this isn't properly, btw! i'm not sure exactly what properly is...) But this method just puts you on a high all day - try it it is amazing :D

Thank you Merlincove, that was a very enlightening post and one that I can truly respect because it came from a very positive and friendly place, the heart.
I guess when we are at our most content with the world around us, we are really meditating or resonating with the world around us more harmoniously. I am starting to experience this a lot more these days. There is reason and purpose to everything if we just take the time to see it.
I feel very strongly about not scaring people away from something they may be interested in just because of their lack of understanding. There will always be new comers and we must be prepared to make the connection, no matter how far we think we have progressed we should be prepared to come back to the beginning if it helps someone else.
Your teacher sounds like someone we should all aspire to be. I will try to remember to breath now because its not the first time I have heard of that but it all depends on how its explained. You did that very well for me, and I am sure others will get a great deal of positivity from it too.

I agree, though maybe not for beginners, whose minds and egos are in such a rush to understand and be enlightened, that it creates a diversion in the mind, and they end up confused and thinking, "well that meditation doesn't work, or isn't for me, all the time EGO is laughing as it has won once again, and keeps us from knowing our true self/will.
Ego doesn't want change, and well fight very hard to retain control, it can be fooled, and it can do a lot of foolin and feeling.
I am having a very enjoyable meditational experience" or words to that effect if heard during meditation, would be proof to me at least, that I wan't in the right state to be meditating.
I think it can take quite a while to wise up to the reptilian/shark brain that wants to control us and keep us 'safe' from any new knowledge, and by that I do not mean external reptilians, I mean the part of the brain that is very primitive within all of us, that is primarily geared towards staying alive.
A couple of books I would recommend would be "Mindfullness in Plain English" by Venerable Henepola Guranatana and Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism by Chogyam Trunpa.
The 2nd book is very much about getting rid of props that we think/feel we need in order to be at one, and is quite a hard book to read.
The 1st one I would recommend to anyone interested in learning 'Insight@ meditation, easy to understand and follow and remember.

i haven't experienced this personally coco, tho have met many who have - try a breathing exersize pre meditation (which can be a meditation in itself) to fill the body with oxygen. Yawning is a natural reaction to draw in more oxygen, so a breathing exersize might help. Try cyclical breath, breathe in for the count of 4 seconds, hold the breath within you for the count of four, exhale to the count of four and then pause for the count of four before breathing in again, do the entire cycle (in, hold, out, pause) four times. If you can't manage four, then it is ok to do it for 3 seconds each - if you want to try this, it is good to work up when it becomes getting easy, 5 second breath's, 6 second breath's up to 7 seconds - working each one by the same number of cycles as the breath takes: upto 7 cycles for the 7 seconds breath. I find 7 difficult sometimes, especially the pause bit.
Alternatively, to fill the body up with air you can try breathing in and out without any pause: taking deep breaths, as deep as you can and breathing out straight away, just in out in out in out for a few minutes without pausing between in or out or in - continul rhytmic breathing for a few minutes. This can leave you feeling spaced out though, or like you are on drugs, so take it carefully hehe - oxygen is one of the most potent drugs, once we know how to use it
i think yamning might be an instinctive reaction that the body gives out when it is in a state of rest, so at least you know your body is working ok
you don't have to be sitting or lying down to meditate though, you can do it while out walking, or by just sitting out in the countryside watching the world. You can just drift away, watching nature as an observer, detached from it and yet looking at it intently. :D

No, actually it was snobbery, and it was quite clear he practices ego instead of oneness, his attitude reflected that for all to see. His answers and posts were no more insightful than an order to do it "his" way, egotistical expression at its finest.
Thank you, sir. I shall follow your instructions this evening. :)
In reference to observing nature, believe it or not, I have done that and it's wonderful. I would fix my gaze up into the old Great Oaks, which are prevalent on the US Gulf Coast where I once lived. Marvelous! Those trees would take away all the stress and craziness of the day at work and in traffic and silence my mind. Just being in the moment.
For the sake of any curiosity, of course there are trees in Central Texas but they do not grow so tall or branch out so greatly. I've tried staring into them. The effect is not the same. Another adjustment for me to make. I am toying with the idea that when I am able I may well move to Lampasas. Very small townish and they have better trees there - the town is less than 20 miles away but the difference is it was an established community well before the area my parents moved to. The land where we live now was once open range; cattle grazing land.
Peace be unto, dear.

Don't get me wrong, some books can be useful, especially for those starting out on the great inner journey. I just think we in the west over intellectualize meditation.
Insight (vipassana) = Zen. Same thing, different label.
As Ichi Wa Zen also said 'eyes open'.
I learned insight meditation(vipassana) from Theravada monks who taught me the eyes closed method. I found that I used to have more dreams/thoughts/fantasies and sleepiness this way.
Since changing to shikantaza/zazen, with the eyes open, my meditation feels more fresh and I am able to 'just sit'.
By the way, the Mindfulness in Plain English book is one of the best, whatever 'style' you want to practice.

THe story of enlightened Buddha is a fairy tale. Buddha and Krishna (=Christ) are just two incarnations of Vishnu the sun god who gives light and enlightens.

Hello Everyone,
One thing I think we can agree on is meditation means a lot of different things to alot of people. There are many ways of conducting it with just as many objectives. Someone said earlier its not how you get there but rather getting there thats important. I would have to agree.
Some years ago I began to learn how to juggle (three balls in standard cascade pattern), it took me a long time to truly master! However when I became able to maintain it for 30 seconds or longer (as supposed to throwing up three, catching one and chasing the two) I begun to notice how relaxing it was. It would seem that while juggling you learn to use a different part of the brain that most of us do not use in our day to day lives.
A good friend of mine (a seventh son of seventh son) had a great way of explaining the process. He would say that you don't learn how to juggle but rather forget how not to. This sums it up to me perfectly.
Another interesting fact (if true) is in medieval times being able to juggle was classed as witchcraft and the only person who was aloud to was the kings jester.
I would love to hear from anyone else's experiences with juggling in terms of how it makes them feel.
And can I just say thanks to everyone who's contributed to this thread, I've found it very useful.
So thanks.
Love and Light

Hi friends......
As far as I am concerned, meditation is up to the person doing it and what works for them. If a person requires music, then let them listen to music. If that person requires not thought and a blank mind, so be it. Should that person need to concentrate on a particular thought, then that is the way it is.
Meditation is a gift that has many doors to the upper levels of consciousness. As we are all individuals - spiritually and socially - then every individual needs to find their way. If they choose a white light to come into their bodies, then that is what they choose. Or purple, or golden.... something will spark within the individual to bring them to the openness of universal spiritual unity. How they take that path is up to that person.
Sharing of ideas and what has worked is to be encouraged, not discouraged. "This didin't work for me so it won't work for you" is an improper attitude. "This didn't work for me but it may for you" is much better. Everyone has their own way of attuning, let them learn and experience on their own level.
It has taken me YEARS to learn how to meditate and get where I need to go. But that is just me. I had to take what I thought and felt was right, what I thought and felt was wrong, experiment, and come up with my way of getting there. So it is for everyone else. Ideas and advice are grand. "Screw this way of doing it" is destructive and keeps yet another soul from its original source.
Let openness and experimentation prevail in this. Share ideas, not criticism for what did not work for one ruin the experience for all.

I'd really appreciate some advice
I started with TM years ago they taught me to repeat a 3 syllable word but I found it hard to not force it and it gave me headaches so I shifted into just feeling the air temperature changes of my breadth in and out of my nose
I had some progress and it made me a calmer person and I reached a plateau I've never slipped off - however I abandoned meditation after getting interested in other stuff which I thought would be a natural progression
since then I've tried getting back into it, and had great trouble being able to not get distracted by thoughts - I sit for maybe 40 minutes , sometimes I get sensations which feel as though my hands have enlarged and different bodyparts (mouth)- which I assume is just body relaxation boiling off from the nerves (i used to get these attacks when I was 3 and 4 years old where just before sleep I would feel my hands enlarge) -
these body relaxation sensations are fine but in terms of mind, there's no moments of just 'awareness', it's always awareness with and about distracting thoughts
also I'm doing it half lotus, back against a wall - sitting in a chair sends me to sleep, at around 8pm - getting the time is tough I've even resorted to sitting crosslegged with tissue in my ears in the toilets at work out of desperation
any advice guys?
also theres no question in my mind as to 'why should we mediate' i've known first hand how alot of negative things which were dragging me down I saw as 'illusions' mainatined by a certain point of view or a state of mind - this was the plateau I reached I spoke of earlier
and I knew some poeple in the group who were learning with me had some amazing syncronistic experiences while getting into it deeper
however I'm now getting so frustrated I'm considering those dream state machines, but these things along with music CDs and drugs don't feel like a way of progressing the mind for me

There are a few reasons why the headaches might have been happening. It could, somewhat ironically, be due to mental tension. In a sense trying to hard, especially if you are forcing it. Another reason for headaches in meditation is the prana/chi not being able to flow properly. This particularly occurs in the temples and even the bridge of the nose. Try connecting the tongue to the top of the mouth. Ideally it should be just behind the hard ridge towards the back of the roof of the mouth. However many find this position difficult. If so put the tip of the tongue up behind the front teeth on the roof of the mouth. With this connection breathe any energy build up or heat down to belly (about 3 fingers width down and one inch behind from the belly button) via down the front of the body.

You could be meditating for too long here. Might be an idea to cut it in half for a while. Meditation is actually quite demanding in a lot of ways, especially so if one is struggling with it. Don't be violent with yourself and force yourself to do something which is producing negative results.
It is maybe also worth pointing out that as we go deeper into the mind it can churn up more thoughts, often stronger thoughts, impression and other beasties that are deep seated. I've had stuff such as memories from 20 or more years ago spring into mind during meditation. Stuff which I hadn't even thought about since they occured back then. I am always amazed at what the mind can produce. So in a way the mind can appear to become noiser as it slows down. A good analogy is a fan spinning at a high speed. When it is doing so you don't notice the blades. Yet once it starts to slow you begin to notice the blades and the slower it gets the more aware you become of the blades. So it can be with meditation.
I've had similar problems of whenever my practice is interrupted it can be difficult sometimes to get back into it. It almost feels like I have to ride a wave of greater inner agitation for a while during meditation. But once I get over that I find I'm closer to being where I left of.
It might also be worth looking at diet and water intake here also. Make sure your diet is supportive of your meditation.

Personally I would avoid such things and persist with your meditation. Remember you have spent years upon years unwittingly conditioning your mind in ways you are not even aware of. Maybe even so for life times. It is going to take some time to sort it out and much of this isn't going to be pretty. Patience and steady practice, step by step, little by little.
