Marine (CA) Dies of Heart Attack in Baghdad, Mom Has Heart Attack at the News
Paper Reveals: U.S. Marine Died from Heart Attack in Baghdad -- Then Mom Had Heart Attack When She Heard News
By E&P Staff
Published: October 26, 2007 4:15 PM ET
NEW YORK As E&P has often chronicled in the past year, the toll of noncombat deaths among U.S. troops in Iraq continues to climb (in fact, it has surged lately), not well over 700 of the total of almost 4000. The Pentagon rarely releases any details about them beyond saying they are "under investigation." But local papers, after interviewing friends of families, sometime provide information on an accident, illness, friendly fire, or suicide.
It happened again this week, after the death of Cpl. Erik T. Garoutte, 22, of Santee, Ca. He was a Marine who died one week ago at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune he "was exercising when he collapsed. He never regained consciousness."
More tragedy followed: "His mother, Donna Stone of Santee, had a heart attack after hearing about his death. 'The doctor said that literally a piece of her heart died with him,' said Jeff Stine, a family friend and associate pastor at Zion Christian Fellowship in Spring Valley."
Garoutte was assigned to the 1st Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team Company, Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force in Norfolk, Va.
The Union-Tribune related that "the family hopes an autopsy will explain what caused Garoutte to die."

Sailor Supporting OIF: 'She Always Had Big Smiles' (FL)
A TWIST of fate put one of two US servicewomen shot dead in their US barracks in the wrong place at the wrong time, it emerged yesterday.
Anamarie Sannicolas Camacho, 20, was killed alongside 19-year-old room-mate Genesia Mattril Gresham at around 5am on Monday.
Their alleged killer, fellow serviceman Clarence Jackson, 20, was still in critical condition in the BDF Hospital last night, after apparently shooting himself in the head immediately after the killings.
Ms Camacho, 20, from Panama City, Florida, joined the US Navy in June last year, because she could not afford to go to college, her heartbroken mother has revealed.
Jovy Paulino described her daughter as a "happy person", who only joined the military in the hope of obtaining a degree.
"She always had big smiles," Ms Paulino said in an interview with the daily Saipan Tribune.
"She was an individual who was filled with energy."
Ms Paulino said her daughter knew that going to college would be too expensive, so she joined the navy after graduating from school, so she could fulfil her dream of obtaining a degree.
"She always tried to do things on her own. She was an independent child," said Ms Paulino, who lives in Tinian, one of the same group of Northern Marinas islands as Saipan.
Ms Paulino said her daughter's body was expected to arrive home next Monday.
She is hoping her daughter will be given a memorial service along with full military honours.
Ms Camacho shared a room in barracks at the Naval Support Activity base, in Juffair, with Ms Gresham, of Lithonia, Georgia, who had only been in the military for 11 months.
The women, who each held the rank of master-at-arms, were reportedly shot almost immediately after one of them answered a knock on the door.
Jackson, who was found unconscious with a head wound, had only just been reprieved from a restraining order after attacking one of the women, said to be his ex-girlfriend, weeks earlier, said sources.
US navy officials yesterday said it would be inappropriate to comment on what charges he may face, since he is in such a critical condition.
Doctors have said he is not expected to survive or to ever regain consciousness, since the bullet passed through his brain.
Jackson was part of the base security team and as such authorised to carry a loaded gun.
A spokeswoman said only authorised personnel were allowed to carry guns on the base. She dismissed allegations that Jackson had attacked one of the victims before as "rumours".
The spokeswoman confirmed that people working on the US base were allowed to have relationships, as long as they adhered to the strict fraternity policy and it was not disruptive to the workforce
"They have to be within their own pay grade and chain of command," she told the GDN.
The spokeswoman was unable to confirm a report in the official US military publication Stars and Stripes that a memorial for victims was to be held on Sunday.
It also emerged earlier that security teams at first thought a gunman was still on the loose, immediately after the shootings.
Hundreds of personnel were evacuated from barracks within the base, as armed teams searched the building.
Many were in underwear or nightclothes and had to be provided with clothing from the base stores, since they were not allowed back into their rooms for several hours, said sources.
Stars and Stripes reported that the incident took place on the fourth floor of the barracks, which houses both visiting military personnel and junior enlisted sailors. The barracks are reportedly less than 50 metres from the Freedom Suq, a popular shopping and recreation area within the base.
Personnel living in the barracks were initially evacuated to the nearby gymnasium, said the report. The lock-down at the base was lifted after about an hour, but it was apparently several hours before personnel were allowed back into the barracks.

LATTA — Two days after the the death of of a S.C. National Guard Sgt. Edward O. Philpot, the small town of Latta in Dillon County where he lived with his family continues to mourn his loss.
Philpot, 38, died Tuesday in Afghanistan as a result of a vehicle rollover while he was traveling with the 218th Brigade Combat Team , according to a press release from S.C. National Guard Public Affairs Office.
Philpot was serving with the 1st Battalion 263rd Cavalry (Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition) S.C. National Guard Unit based in Mullins, according to the U.S. Department of Defense He had been in the National Guard for nine years.
He graduated from Coastal Carolina University in Conway, and leaves behind a wife and three young daughters.
Close friends said he was very involved in the community and a dedicated member of Dillon Church of God.
Over the past eight years, Richard Kopituk said, what began as the interaction between a customer and employee developed into a relationship similar to that of a father and son.
“He told us that he really thought of us like substitute parents,” said Kopituk, owner of RJK Frames and Things in Latta.
Close friends said Philpot spent his Saturday mornings taking his three daughters to Kopituk’s coffee shop for cookies.
“Well, you’re just kind of shocked at first. I think this is the first time the war has really been brought that close to us,” said Neyette Williams, Philpot’s neighbor of eight years.
“It’s just a devastating thing. He’s the first one from here that we have lost, and of course it’s sad anytime you lose somebody,” she said. “But, this hits very close to home because we look out that front door every day and realize he’s not gonna come back anymore.”
Williams said while Philpot was proud to serve his country, he was also a proud father, husband and man of God.
Dillon Church of God has established a memorial fund for the Philpot family. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 573 Dillon, SC 29536 in care of the church.
A fund has also been set up at First Bank in Latta.
Philpot’s funeral will be held in Manchester, Ky., where most of his family lives, sometime next week. A representative from Rominger Funeral Home, which is handling the arrangements, said a time and date for services has not been announced.
Two months ago, 20-year-old Spc. Kodi Tyler of Latta, who also was serving in Philpot’s unit, was seriously injured in combat in Afghanistan and continues to recover.
Just a week before Tyler was injured, U.S. Army Pvt. Juan Manuel Lopez Jr. was killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Lopez, who died Aug. 13, was the first Florence resident to die in the mission.
The last Pee Dee serviceman to die in Afghanistan, according to the U.S. Department of Defense, was U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jason Carlyle Hicks, 25, of Jefferson in Chesterfield County. Hicks, who was killed when his Pave Hawk helicopter crashed March 23, 2003, was serving with the 41st Rescue Squadron from Moody Air Force Base in Georgia.
That same month, 19-year-old U.S. Army Pfc. Spence Alexander McNeil of Bennettsville died March 8, 2003, as a result of an accident in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, while participating in Operation Enduring Freedom. McNeil was serving with the 3rd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment from Fort Bliss, Texas.
Another Florence County native, 48-year-old U.S. Sgt. Maj. Army Michael Boyd Stack of Lake City, was killed in action in Iraq on April 14, 2004.

DUNNELLON - Former classmates and administrators described Army Spc. Jason B. Koutroubas as a smart, quiet student who always wanted to join the military. "There was no doubt about that," said Michael McClain Jr., a friend. "He was looking forward to going to college when he got back."
Koutroubas died Oct. 14 in Tal Afar, Iraq, according to the Department of Defense. Koutroubas, 21, suffered his fatal injuries in a non-combat-related incident. The death is under investigation.
His parents' home near Dunnellon was quiet Tuesday afternoon. An American flag waved in the afternoon breeze. A truck with an "Army Dad" tag was parked in the yard.
A relative, identified as Koutroubas' aunt, answered the door at the family home but declined to say much.

True, human beings do keep dying: "Coalition of the Willing" personnel, Iraqui civilians, etc.
I was born in 1966 so I can't speak from firsthand knowledge. However, the movies I've seen and whatnot regarding the Vietnam War seem to show a lot more public outrage (I'm thinking of the crowd scene in Washington in "Forest Gump") and I'm thinking of the, "Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?" protest anthem. Is it my imagination or do people these days just not give a shit? Maybe it's a result of our desensitisation from watching so many violent movies and TV? I mean, whatever happened to the outrage? How come this isn't headlining the news .. ah, fuck it. I give up. People just don't give a shit any more.

The really important question here is: What is needed to bring peace to the middle east?
My opinion:
1. Deal with Israel.
2. Stop trying steal oil.
3. Leave the damn place alone!
4. Give the Arabs a very clear warning that the next time they attack a non-arab nation, the response will be nuclear.
Of course my opinion is useless because I have never spoken personally to the Chiefs of Staff, the wonderful folks who decide who lives and who dies out there and down here too.
