I think it started with a good idea. Children come from sex (duh) and those children SHOULD be considered the most important thing in the adults lives who created them.
Promiscuity essentially deprives children of the security of knowing their parents and knowing beyond a doubt that they love each other. It's very important that children know that their parents love each other. In a selfish, promiscuity-promoting world, childhood mental disorders have been on the rise. I am talking about depression and dissociative disorders, eating disorders, NOT ADD/ADHD, which my sister-in-law has convinced my brother that he has, and tries to tell me I have. What a load of horse hockey. When I was a child, I was ravaged by depression, because I felt unlovable, since my parents divorced and hated each other. Of course I "knew" it was my fault! All children of broken homes feel that way, if their parents were together long enough for them to see the breakup happen.
So YES I am saying that if you create a child, that child is more important than YOU. You have created a totally helpless being who depends upon you completely for its health and well-being.
Then you get the power-tripping Nicolaitans thinking, hey we could use this to control people, just like thoth said. Then it all went to pot.

To be able to love in this way is the authority man has lost - his only true authority over woman.
This requires pure love. It does not depend on technique. A man may develop his sexual technique but he cannot use expertise to make divine love. Exciting sensations are gratifying and give him a form of authority, but they are not the love that woman craves. He may satisfy her, like a good meal. Yeah...I'd have to say that Hefner (and all that followed in his rather innocous wake) has done more to "villify" sex and women than religion. "Tibetan #6 restricted exercise
The series of Five Tibetan exercises described above can be practiced two or three times a day everyday during the entire lifetime. In contrast, the following exercise, according to Lamas, has a very special purpose and it should be practiced only in circumstances described below. If you are not sure, and do not practice the first five exercises regularly, do not practice this exercise. You have been warned.
The purpose of the Tibetan #6 exercise is to redirect the excess of sexual and reproductive energy, generated by the activity of the base chakra to all higher chakras along the spine, especially to the brow chakra, which activity is related to our spiritual awareness and psychic abilities. By systematically practising the first five Tibetan exercises it is quite possible to raise the energy of the base chakra so much, that the sexual urge appears and needs to be dealt with. This can happen at any age.
One way to handle the situation is to dissipate this powerful energy in sexual activities. The Tibetan alternative is to transmute it to higher use, to accelerate our spiritual development and rejuvenate the body. Instead of dissipating the reproductive energy you can use it to regenerate cells in your entire body. The choice is yours, you have the free will, as always.
In my opinion, sexual activity without sincere love and a spiritually matched partner is like going to a forest and not seeing trees. Or enrolling at a University just to have lunch in the canteen.
Sexual love should be a spiritual union, bringing experiences and sensations far more profound, pleasurable, longer lasting and beneficial than just a physical act of relief.
In the absence of a perfect partner, Tibetan Lamas offer us the alternative, verified over many thousands of years to be not only effective, but also very beneficial to our health, longevity, bio-energy level, Aura and most importantly to our spiritual development. the reason i like the taoist system is because it draws the chi down the front of the body, back out of the brain. too much chi in the brain can cause kundalini psychosis. it's more of a cycle than a drawing up.

i think that making sex sinful and dirty goes hand in hand with pornography, sluttifying women etc. sex is a very good thing if you respect yourself and your partner. i am rather old fashioned in that i actually believe in marriage and a monogomous relationship. but religion has played a great role in making us ashamed of our bodies and sexual urges. this leads to the extreme of being a complete ho bag. ever hear of the "catholic school girl" reputation? if we did away with the madonna/whore complex then maybe we could find the sacred sexuality that is so powerful in spiritual evolution.

i grew up with so much body shame, that i was frozen, addicted, and alienated.
