WHILE RICHARD WARMAN HAS CLAIMED FOR YEARS THAT DAVID ICKE IS AN ANTI SEMITE IN HIS EFFORTS TO DENY HIM A PUBLIC PLATFORM, IT IS WORTH READING THE FOLLOWING:
THIS REPORT BY BRIAN SALMI APPEARED IN THE TERMINAL CITY NEWSPAPER
David Icke. The mere mention of the name sets off a carnival of vitriolic, animated, ill-informed, ludicrous, hysterical and hilarious conversations and arguments. Now, the man who bills himself as the world's most controversial speaker finds himself on the wrong end of a million dollar defamation lawsuit. The plaintiff in the action, which has been filed in Ontario Superior Court, is Icke's arch nemesis, Richard Warman, a lawyer and member of the Ontario Green Party. Warman's Statement of Claim alleges that Icke has defamed him in his book Children of the Matrix by referring to him as a liar, a hypocrite, a puppet/stooge, a censor and a fascist Nazi hatemonger who deliberately covers up child abuse. Included in Warman's action are a number of small, independent Canadian bookstores which carry Children of the Matrix, including Vancouver's Banyen Books.
Icke is the author of a number of books which, essentially, claim that almost everything of import regarding politics and religion that you have been taught is a lie. At the centre of Icke's theories is the premise that the world is controlled by a race of shape-shifting lizards who walk amongst us. The 'reptilians' have, according to Icke, used their superior knowledge of the secrets of the universe to trap humanity in a web of fear and hate.
Warman has repeatedly attempted, often successfully, to have Icke's presentations around the world cancelled at the last minute by phoning the venue and opining that Icke is an anti-Semite. Warman quotes passages from Children of the Matrix in his Statement of Claim to make his case. For instance, Warman quotes page 411 of the book where Icke writes, "Where am I a hatemonger? Where do I condemn the Jewish people? I don't, and Warman knows that I don't, but then that's not the point is it? And what are Warman and Farber (the Bronfmans) seeking to do in this campaign of personal abuse? To get as many people as possible to hate me. So who are the real hatemongers here?" Icke continues, "Warman has worked closely in his campaign of vilification and censorship against me with the Canadian Jewish Congress or CJC.'
Jon Ronson, an award winning British journalist (who happens to be a Jew) included a chapter on Icke in his book Them: Adventures with Extremists (a best seller in Britain). Ronson was in Vancouver in March 2000 to research the circus which is every David Icke presentation and film a segment for a documentary which paralleled Them. Ronson, himself, does not believe Icke is an anti-Semite and told this reporter that he had interviewed members of the hierarchy of the British equivalent of the Canadian Jewish Congress who told him. 'Icke's not an anti-Semite. He may be a mental case but he's not an anti-Semite.'
Warman's Vancouver allies were unsuccessful in their attempt to have the Vogue Theatre cancel its contract for the sold-out Icke presentation in 2000 but were successful in having the Englishman bounced from the Ridge Theatre in a subsequent visit last spring. During the 2000 Vancouver pilgrimage CFUN radio morning talk show host Pia Shandel cancelled her interview with Icke after station management faced enormous pressure from influential and powerful individuals in Ontario. Just weeks after Icke's Vancouver presentation the local chapter of the Canadian Jewish Congress held a forum titled The Media's Role in a Democratic Society: Freedom of the Press vs. Media Accountability.
Warman's minions also managed to get a book signing by Icke cancelled after threatening to picket the Chapter's outlet which was to host the event. The signing was rescheduled at another bookstore on a later date. During the signing a number of protestors barged in and attempted to pie Icke. The protestors missed their target and the pies sailed off the store's loft and landed on the childrens books shelf. The protestors then fled the small, independently owned bookstore. Another anti-Icke protestor refused to admit that he had any prior knowledge of the attempted pieing and refused to compensate the store for the damaged books.
