Genocide Under the Radar Again in Darfur
'The unpleasant reality is that the much-vaunted ceasefire treaty has proven useless on the ground. Sudan has exploited a loophole that allows its Janjaweed proxy militias, who are not a party to the peace agreement, to continue their reign of terror. Because Sudan has never backed away from its dishonest contention that the Janjaweed are independent from the government, it can still claim that it is not responsible for the Janjaweed's crimes.
By now, there is little denying that the government trains, arms, and otherwise colludes with the Janjaweed, but the lack of an enforcement mechanism means that the UN can do little to compel Sudan to do anything more than pay lip service to their obligation to curtail and disarm these murderous mobs.'
