Surprising X-ray flare on brown dwarf
'This article is a really good example of the surprises that lay in store when we actually observe the universe. Brown dwarfs are supposed to bequiescent, but it turns out this is wrong and can be just as active as the sun and more active than the planet Jupiter, but astronomers do not really now why. This is another example of the same process occurring at many levels of the universe, from brown dwarf to star to planet.'

New satellite observations of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes reveal
surprising features of mysterious blasts from Earth
'Gamma Ray flashes as strong as those found in black holes and in neutron
stars have been found in the Earth's upper atmosphere to the surprise of
astronomers. These flashes reach very high energies around the speed of
light.
They are also associated with lightning which could finally lead to
an explanation for this natural phenomenon - they are the discharge of
electrons from black holes in the Earth's own atmosphere fantastical though
that may sound, no credible alternative explanation is being put forward and
researchers are baffled.'
