Sir,

I note that I have not received a response to my letter dated November 21, 2012. In the event that this has not been passed on to you, I enclose a copy.

You will note that I am asking you to join me in requesting that David Cameron initiate a nationwide investigation into care home abuse.

The current investigations - Yewtree and Pallial - are too narrowly defined to address how extensive the issue of paedophile abuse in the care system has been over the past 40 years.

Ever since the Savile story broke, I have been interviewing people from the care system. Psychologically-damaged adults who need - and deserve - acknowledgement and closure from the terrible wrongs that were visited on them.

Given your very good fortune, in that you are able to afford swifter justice than many of these victims, I wonder if you would be prepared to extend yourself to help others who also need to be heard.

I do hope this e-mail reaches you. I feel, given how high profile your name has been around this issue, that you are someone who may be able to provide integral support to this quite heinous blot on our country.

Yours sincerely,
Sonia Poulton

Sir,
I am writing to request your help in a matter that is dear to my heart.

I have recently conducted interviews with care home abuse victims for TV and press. During my research it has become clear that paedophile activity in the system was not restricted to North Wales.
So it is that I agree with MP Tom Watson in calling for an investigation to extend beyond the Welsh border.

I wonder if you would support me in pursuing a public investigation nationwide? Given your recent experience of being wrongly implicated in something as heinous as child abuse, I feel you are particularly well-placed for such a vital task.

I have amassed significant information that I will readily share. I urge caution, however. Some of the personal testimonies – that of acts of depravity carried out on already vulnerable children – are not for the faint-hearted.

You should know that I disagreed with the Newsnight report. It is appalling that even the most basic journalistic checks were not adhered too. I cannot support what the programme did.

However, I am concerned that the subsequent fall-out has detracted from the issue that we must continue to pursue – that of child abuse in the care system – and may result in victims being reluctant to come forward for fear of being disbelieved.

Lord Alistair, can I count on your support in seeing that the victims receive their long-delayed justice - and that the true perpetrators of these crimes are held to account?

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Sonia PoultonJournalist/Broadcaster
